In high school, my best friend and I were otaku. I remember we used to debate with each other long and hard over which was better: isekai stories that have a long preamble about the protagonist dying or being summoned, and having a conversation with God about their reincarnation or transference to another world, or isekai stories that skip that as much as possible and just catapult the character straight into a different world.

Her opinion was: of course the first one! You have to know who the character is and what their headspace is! You need to establish a sense of normal to contrast against the wonder of fantasy!

My opinion was: naturally the second one! Isekai protagonists are generic author and audience stand-ins! They rarely even mention their past life family and friends let alone miss them in another world! Isekai is all about power fantasy and world building!

We never came to a middle ground we could agree on.

Aaah, I wonder what happened to her. I wonder if she still plays video games and reads manga? We talked about going to university together, but ended up getting accepted into different ones. Somehow, we slowly stopped talking to each other completely.

Will she come to my funeral?

What a silly last thought to have before I die.
