Although so many exciting revelations happened, the truth is, nothing has really changed. Which finally brings me to how I ended up in magic training.

Since the cat is out of the bag about my magical ability and my willingness to go around casting things willy nilly, my parents discussed and decided they should train me in the basics of magic. If only to prevent me from killing myself with something more outrageous.

“Then, look this way.” My mother sits with me on the floor of the bedroom. “Mummy is going to teach you very important skills.” Taking my wrists in her hands, a warm spark of light flows out from her palms into my arms. It travels through my body, circulating until it buries itself deep in my chest.

I can feel it inside me, like a heartbeat.

“Close your eyes and focus on the mana spark. There is where your magic pool is. To learn magic, you first need to learn how to see your own magic and control it.”

I obediently close my eyes. This is it! Magic training! As I see nothing but darkness, I focus hard on the feeling of warmth in my chest. I don’t notice when I stop hearing the sounds of my breathing or the birdsong outside. I don’t realise when my whole world becomes inky black and the feeling of permeating warmth.

Gradually, behind my eyelids, I feel like I can see something. A tiny spark of light, trembling and on the verge of being extinguished. It’s a violet-red colour, like a deep wine. A warm golden-white light is circling it, giving a feeling of protection.

That tiny spark, I instinctively know, is my magic pool.

I can hear my mother’s voice, but not through my ears, per se. It’s more like a kind of feeling vibrating through me.

“Gently, without snuffing it out, coax the spark into a flame. When your magic grows from an ember into a fire, you’ll be ready.”

I concentrate on that tiny spark. To make an ember grow, you need to gently blow on it. How do I do that? It’s not a real thing. I imagine a very small, weak breeze, stoking the struggling light. I blow on it, feeling my heart clench everytime it shakes so much it almost threatens to go out completely. Over and over, until it gradually grows. Though it’s doubled in size now, it’s still so tiny.

I open my eyes, gasping for breath and covered in sweat. Although it only felt like a moment, judging by the shadows on the wall, I was meditating for hours in actuality. My tummy rumbles with hunger, and I let out a piteous cry to get my mother’s attention.

“Ah, is baby awake now? You did so well, let’s eat something now.” She picks me up and whisks me away to the rocking chair by the window to be fed.

I’m told I can’t meditate more than once a day, but I wouldn’t even if I hadn’t been told so. It was exhausting, and I think it would be counterproductive to try again so soon. When I check my status, my total MP has gone from 1 to 2, though.

It’s a tiny amount of progress, but it’s progress.

I relax in my crib the next day, kicking my feet happily at the feeling of attainment. My father comes to me, poking my round belly in a teasing fashion.

“Hey, don’t get too comfortable. You need to quickly learn how to walk so you can begin sword training.” He warns me with a chuckle as I swipe at his finger angrily. He picks up the salmon, shaking it at me teasingly. “If you really are of my bloodline, then you’re gonna have to learn how to become a great swordsman as quickly as possible!

“Your grandfather has a blade hand so sharp he can cut through a tree with a single stroke, y’know. As for your grandmother, she could behead all the heads of a chimaera with one sweep of her sword. Your uncles and aunts are even more unreasonable. Plus… well, hopefully you’ll never have to meet them all, but in case you do, grow up quickly and learn to defend yourself.”

He boops my nose, with a sad look on his face.

“I thought we’d have a few years together before I’d be forced to leave. Although it was sad, it would have been better.”

He leans down, kissing my forehead with a gentleness I don’t recognise.

“I’d rather miss you forever than force you to grow up in that place.”

He leaves me mysteriously after that, alone to contemplate his strange words with the ugly salmon.

Well, whatever. I probably wouldn’t get any answers even if I was capable of asking questions. These are the kinds of things that will all come out eventually with time, so no use concerning myself with it right now!

I do my daily training of stoking my magic spark into a respectable pool, but even as the ember grows, it never becomes a true flame. The larger it grows, the longer it takes to grow it again. Day by day the digits slowly eke up, until two weeks later, when I am finally a month and a half old already, the ember bursts into a small, quiet, but reassuring flame.

My MP finally hits double digits.

I’m going to make a stupid decision, but now that I finally have 10 MP, there is something I want to confirm. When I first learned the “Examine” spell, I actually passed out before I even get to scope the information it gave from using it. That’s why, I’m going to use my fresh magic pool of ten whole points to immediately cast it.

Now, how do I cast it? I learned it by just staring at things and examining them, trying to see what I could glean the old fashioned way. To cast the spell, should I just chant it?

“Geebam!”

…Nooooo!
