"The thing about the research that I let you read was that Noah wasn't actually informed with the actual status of it. He asked for it to be that way before. The research was already finished but the company hasn't released it because they are waiting for something." A small apologetic smile was given to Jess as Dr. Sison continued.
"Noah gave up on the research?"
Dr. Sison sighed with regret. "Yes. And not long ago, ex-wife - Dr. Lui was still working with us. Until recently."
She gave Dr. Sison a small nod. She heard about it because it was the reason why Lucille was staying with Noah now and not with her mother.
"Do you want me to remove you from that research?"
Jess was shocked that Dr. Sison would think of removing her access to read the research that Noah did with his ex-wife. "Dr. Sison, I don't understand --"
"If it's going to be a problem with your personal relationship with Noah. Don't you think it would be best if you no longer have access to that research?"
"Dr. Sison, when you asked me to read it and I gave my observation about it, you said that was the reason why you made me your assistant." She smiled softly at the old woman. "I hope that I can continue reading the research without any form of bias just because of my personal relationship with Noah. The research was truly amazing and I'm learning a lot."
"Noah is almost a son to me. I saw how he was broken because of what happened in the fast, that's why I'm willing to let go of the etiquette of dating in the office, among other things if it means I can see Noah happy again."
"Thank you for the thought, Dr. Sison. Even if I know that you're doing it because of Noah," she chuckled lightly. Dr.Sison did not bother to deny anything. She must have liked Noah a lot. And not just as a boss. Just like from what she said, Noah was almost a son to her. "But I want to keep things professional within work as much as possible." She gave Dr. Sison a grateful smile.
Dr. Sison nodded with a pleased smile on her lips. "So, what's planned?"
"I will finish my internship here with you --"
"Actually, Jessica, since Dr. Llano is here working with me, I find things more convenient having two assistants. And I was thinking since Dr. Llano is originally going to stay here for a long period of time because he's working on the actual research while you do mostly paperwork…"
Jess swallowed a bitter taste inside her mouth when she heard that Gareth is more useful to Dr. Sison than her. But she kept a neutral expression on her face as she listened to Dr. Sison.
"I think it would be more efficient for me if you were in the Palo Alto laboratory rather than having you and Dr. Llano here."
A crease appeared in between her forehead. "May I ask what it means?" In her head, she was thinking that not only Dr. Sison didn't find her helpful and now she's sending her back.
"Don't think of it negatively, Jessica. You are a big help but you can do the job without having you here." When she saw the dejection in Jess's expression, she added, "also Mr. Ravenport's research has been accepted and you were chosen to work with him."
"Oh!" she exclaimed in surprise. She had no idea that Luke's research had been accepted. He sent her a message that he has big news for her but didn't say any more. So, this is Luke's big news! A huge smile spread across her face. She's happy for Luke and excited to be part of his team.
"Congratulations, Jessica. Take all the experience you can get and when it is your time, I'm quite confident that you'll do great!"
"You may not get a word from the HR, yet but I'm informing you of this because I wanted you to finish the task you have within this week."
Jess ran all the reports that she has to finish for Dr. Sison on top of her head, and knew that one week would be cutting it short. She will be extremely busy this week.
"Yes. I'll get everything ready."
"Thank you, Jessica. Here," she handed her a white envelope embossed with gold on the glossy paper.
Jess accepted the envelope Dr. Sison handed her. She took a quick glance at the text written on top of the envelope.
"It's an invitation to an event for tomorrow. And I want you and Dr. Llano to be there as my representative."
She nodded.
"You may go. Inform Dr. Llano about it."
"Thank you, Dr. Sison." Dr. Sison didn't reply to her anymore as she went back to whatever she was doing before she came in to her office. She quietly took their empty glasses and stepped out of her office.
She went directly to Gareth's desk and dropped the envelope. He looked up at her after taking a glance at the envelope.
"How can I help you, Jess?"
"Dr. Sison gave me this invitation and told us to attend it on her behalf."
Gareth without a word picked and opened the envelope. "Have you seen it before?"
She shook her head.
"Well, can you help me get a suit?" His smile was about to tear his lips with how wide it was.
Jess put down the empty mugs she's holding and picked the invitation. Her eyes narrowed on why Gareth was too happy to attend the event.
"A Night Of Science and Medicine," she read aloud the name of the event in a monotone.
Gareth smirked at her. "You have no idea who the people coming into this event are, are you?"
"No. I don't." She replied honestly.
"Big names. The kind that could sponsor research." His eyes were gleaming with glee.
Jess smiled and fake excitement.. She'll get excited if a certain Tiefenbacher would be there.
