Chapter 33, Sensors and disgusting distractions
I exit my rented property and then the bathhouse before making my way towards the northwest of the capital. It’s quite a long walk and I could have taken a carriage but Ari and I want to take in the sights and smells before we temporarily leave here.
The streets are packed with pedestrians and workers doing various things such as shopping, renovating buildings, carrying equipment or goods and whatever else. The tang of yet to be removed horse dung from the center of the road and various other scents from the goods of merchant stalls I walk past tickle my nose. I give a stall smelling especially pleasant a second glance, deciding to make a stop there.
A young man is selling some sort of grilled meat on sticks and it smells wonderful. I buy a skewer of meat for 5 copper before continuing on my way, munching on it with gusto. It's marinated in some sort of sauce tasting of pepper and garlic.
As I finish the meat and burn away the skewer I come upon an alchemist's shop on my right. I want to clarify something I’ve been wondering about and decide to enter, the usual bell tinkling as I open and close the door. The interior of the shop isn’t that large but is decorated with shelves upon shelves with potions and behind the counter stands an older woman, smiling at me.
Behind her is a glass front cabinet filled with various strange looking herbs and plants and the mix of different herbal and alchemical scents wafting out from the door to its right give a good clue that the workshop producing these products is located in the same building.
“Welcome, dear. What can I do for you this fine morning?”
“Hello. I’ve been wondering about something and I decided to ask a professional instead of just trying to figure it out myself. I can pay you for the information as it’s probably just common knowledge to every alchemist.”
She raises a curious eyebrow but nods at me to continue talking.
“Are mana restorative potions made with biological processes in mind or is it just powerful magic that naturally absorbs into the body when consumed?”
“That I can answer for free since it isn’t even a trade secret. Almost all potions are made with both the alchemical components' inherent magical properties in mind and the biological processes of the consumer. Most humanoid creatures can consume the potions made by alchemists but there are special ones that are race specific even between humanoids.”
“I see. So a creature with a totally different biological structure wouldn’t be able to consume a mana restorative?”
“They might be able to consume it and get some mana regenerated by the alchemical ingredients' inherent power spreading through their body but unseen consequences are likely. There are other ingredients in most potions to help biological processes process the concoction faster and more efficiently, making sure that no bad side effects arise from the treated foreign alchemical materials.”
“Thank you for answering. Please take this at least.”
I leave 5 silver pieces on the countertop before exiting the shop. I’d gotten a satisfactory answer to my question even if it wasn’t the answer I had wanted to hear. It seems like I could still use mana potions if I ever needed a bit of extra mana to win a fight or regenerate a limb but it would come with unexpected and possibly disastrous consequences since my whole body is just a mana construct.
Who knows if the ingredients the alchemist mentioned would start mixing with my own arcane mana structures in order to try and break them down for biological processing. I would either need to make my special mana potions designed to work with my own body or just get by on my own mana regeneration as I have until now.
“That’s a bummer, Zel. We had suspected this might be the case though.”
“Yes, we had. But we can’t mope too much about it. Not having a biological body is definitely superior to being able to drink potions but needing to take a shit after each meal.”
Ari just rolls her eyes at me.
I continue my way towards the Hullinger establishment and walk through their doors when I finally reach it. The same clerk who had directed me to the upper floors last time bounds towards me with a smile.
“Welcome. What can we do for you?”
“I’m looking to return a key.”
“Perfect. Miss Gilta down there can help you get sorted out.”
He points me to a woman a bit further in and I approach her holding out my key. She’s a bit surprised that I’m here turning it in today instead of tomorrow but it isn’t that unusual to suddenly have to leave the rented property ahead of schedule.
Ding! You have unbound [Hullinger Key 43B] from your mana signature.
“Thank you for returning the key, Miss Zelaria. As recompense for the early return of it and show of gratitude for returning the key at all you’ll get a 10% discount on your next rented property up to a maximum discount of the one gold you overpaid for your stay there.”
“Really? That’s nice. Thank you.”
I finish signing the last paperwork signifying my return of the key before exiting the building and making my way to the northern part of the capital. My destination is to the southeast of the capital but I want to pick a few things up before leaving and decide to continue to the eastern gate instead of exiting there and running around the outside wall, even if that would have been faster.
On my way towards the eastern gate I buy a few fruits from a fruit stall, they even have peaches, and find a small general goods store that sells me salt and pepper. Apparently I have to find a more niché store focused on spices if I want anything more interesting but salt and pepper is a good start in my opinion.
The fruit and seasoning cost us about 2 silver and I’m now down to only having 20 silver and 85 copper in storage. It’s not really like having only 20 silver is counted as being dirt poor as you can survive on that amount of coin for quite a while if you spend it wisely, I don’t want to spend wisely though. I want to purchase luxuries and I’ll need more gold when buying pipeweed on my return here after the dungeon delve.
I reach the eastern gate as the sun moves past its zenith and I walk through it before getting some distance between myself, the other travelers, adventurers, guards and merchants. When no one is close to me in my direct path on the road leading southeast Ari floods me with power and I take off running.
The wind whips my loose locks of hair and I start using telekinesis to boost my running speed even further. It feels great being in the open air with freedom to move anywhere in the world by just using my legs. I have a bright smile on my face as I run past adventurers running slower than me or merchants and travelers in their wagons and carts.
“Zel, we should check our notifications before we start our delve.”
“Might as well do it while we run there.”

“The skill gains aren’t that impressive but I suppose we haven’t done that much to warrant any growth in them.”
“Well, a few have gotten some growth with the use we put them through. Like [Arcane Spatial Ring] or [Smoking].”
“Yeah, I know. I just want to get a few more levels in my class skills for when we reach the next evolution threshold, you know?”
“We’ll be stuck there for a long time though as we decided on getting our second class when we reached it. We’ll have time to level the skills then and make sure our evolution is as good as we can get it.”
“It reminds me though, Ari. We haven’t gone through our new class skills we got at level 175. We said we would do it when leaving the capital. You want to go through it now while we run to the dungeon?”
“Sure! Sounds like a good idea.”
-[Mana Machine v. 2.3]-
You have gone far along the path of becoming one with mana. Wielding the most elusive and versatile form of unaligned mana, the Arcane, was not enough for you. You took the concept of being one with your power and manifested your idea in reality. Continuing down this path will give you the tools necessary to turn your mimicry of biological life into a well-oiled machine of unrestrained complexity and possibilities. To wield great power you’ll create a vessel capable of supporting infinite growth.

[Power Profiler]
A machine with great power is often wasting a lot of its potential. Engineering a machine built for extraordinary feats is possible even without great power as long as you know not to waste mana on inefficient design. But what if the machine is both efficient and powerful beyond reason? Take your creation to new heights by using this skill to profile mana expenditure and structural wastage. Skill cost negated by [Passive Power] skill.
[Sensors] - Evolution
Having accurate information of both the environment the machine is operating in and of the machine itself is crucial if it should last any length of time without breaking down. This skill automatically places sensors through the machine to get as much accurate information as possible. The higher the Skill Level the more information is passively collected and the greater the sensitivity on focused observation of specific sensors. Skill cost negated by [Passive Power] skill. (Consumes mana seeing and sensing skills tied to the class.)
“Wow, Zel. These look amazing!”
“[Power Profiler] should give you much more data to work with. We’ll be able to improve our body so much in the next iteration of the design with this to guide us. I’m not really sure about the other one though. What does it mean by evolution?”
“[Sensors] is a skill evolution between two different skills merging into a new one that’s slightly different. It’s kind of like when our mana manipulation general skill became arcane manipulation. It was a positive evolutionary outcome for us and this is probably true here as well.”
“Thank you, Ari. I understand that it might be amazing to be able to sense mana better without needing to spend our regeneration on keeping the skill active but do we really want to lose [Mana Sense]? If our body ever fully disappears we won't be able to sense the world around us at all.”
Ari hums slightly as she considers my point but in the end she isn’t very impressed by it.
“Should we really limit ourselves that badly in the now only because of a possible problem later down the line? We can sense arcane mana with our manipulation skill and we can even sense natural kinetic mana when using arcane telekinesis in tandem with arcane manipulation. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to sense even more natural mana all the time?”
“Do we know that the sensing skill is for sensing mana? It never said.”
“No idea, honestly. I just assumed since it’s an evolution of two combined mana related skills.”
It makes sense, I suppose. Ari’s certainly sure that picking up both skills is the correct decision and I might agree with her.
“Doesn’t this mean that we’ll still have four available skill slots after we’ve selected these skills? Do we really get four more skills before our level 200 threshold?”
“Most likely not. We might not even get any more until after the next evolution. We could always try creating our own general skills that might be compatible with the class but I don’t really have any ideas on what we should try making in that case.
"It isn’t a bad thing to have a few slots open though. We only want the best skills anyway and not fill our empty slots with trash. We might get more skills than slots in our next evolution and then we’ll be thankful we got a few to spare.”
“Should we pick them both up now then?”
“Yes. Let’s do it.”

The effect is immediate and I feel my body changing slightly. New mana structures that seem to somehow connect directly to my soul manifest themselves all through and around my body, switching places and moving slightly as a confusing and unfocused stream of information assaults my mind.
The information slowly becomes clearer as the shifting sensors move into place on what must be the most optimal ratio and distance to cover as much area as possible. I’m already heading towards the ground though as the information isn't calibrating itself quickly enough to avoid a misstep in my telekinetic force enhanced running.
I go down in a heap of limbs, scraping my face off against the road and tumbling around bruising myself all over. No bones are broken but I’m sure it's a close call. I roll onto my back, staring at the blue sky dotted with a few lone, fluffy white clouds and trying to get a grip on my surroundings. Ari is repairing our body but I can feel her being slightly hampered at the jarring load of unexpected information.
After a few minutes of just lying there and slowly getting used to all the new sensations I soon realize what it actually is I’m picking up on. Everything around me is blurry and slightly distorted as if viewed from underwater but as soon as I focus on anything it snaps into sharp relief as if I’m studying it intently with both mana sense and mana sight active at the same time.
It’s really disorienting though as my shifting focus makes everything snap between being blurry and sharp.
“Quite the fall you had there. You look unhurt though. Are you alright?”
The blurry shape that had approached my sensors’ radius snaps into stark relief and I see an older adventurer male in full plate armor carrying a longsword on his back. I don’t actually look at him as I’m still staring up into the clouds but the mana structures constituting his body gives me a very clear picture anyway.
“Yeah. Thank you but I’m fine. Just had a bit of an accident.”
“Are you sure you don’t need any help?”
“Thanks but yes, I’m sure. Have a good day.”
I wave vaguely at the adventurer and he shakes his head in amusement before continuing to run down the road.

I continue laying there for ten more minutes and have to explain to four groups of adventurers that I’m fine and even to a wagon driver who insists on me getting on so that he can give me a lift.
“No, seriously! I’m fine!”
I’m getting tired of having to explain myself again and again to those who hadn’t seen my fall, still feeling slightly dizzy and confused as I get to my feet, starting to walk southeast again. Moving both helps and makes it worse as the sensory information constantly shifts but I have something to focus on so as to not trip again. I don’t dare run but walking will just have to suffice for now.
“Are you okay, Zel?”
“Yeah, it’s getting better faster and faster. It took me by surprise is all. And you?”
“I’m back to feeling as before. No more disorientation.”
“What do you think about this skill?”
“Oh, It’s amazing once you get used to it. Just having a blurry vision in all directions will help immensely when fighting in large groups so as to not get hit by surprise from behind. Then there’s the added benefit of quickly being able to focus on something and read its mana structure without needing to activate a separate skill and draw mana from our mana pool.”
“Sounds like we’ll get a lot of use out of it in the dungeon then.”
“Yes. I’m so excited!”
I grin and Ari does the same. Talking with her and walking has sped up my acclimatization significantly and I can now start running again.
“What about the [Power Profiler]? I haven’t tapped into that information stream yet as I got overwhelmed with [Sensors].”
“I’m currently trying to get a handle on it but I can see its usefulness even now. It outlines the power consumption, flowing paths, structural upkeep and and a lot of other different ways our mana is interacting with our body. I’ll need more time to study it but I’m sure we’ll be using this all the time. It’s going to be perfect for when we overhaul our whole body with new structures.”
“When are we going to do that anyway? We’ve been able to get by with our increased physical stats and mana enhancement but we’re approaching the point where we can use more power than our body can handle. We could for example run faster than this if our legs didn’t break apart from the strain.”
Ari thinks for a moment before answering.
“How about we do it after we’ve hit level 200 and gotten our second class? We might want to wait until we’ve left the dungeon if we manage to progress that far in our delve.”
“That sounds good. Then we’ll be able to make full use of the data you’ve gathered from the profiler during that time.”
I continue running and getting used to the sensation of having information sent directly into my soul from multiple sensors located at different positions on my body. It only takes a few hours until I’ve gotten it under perfect control as it’s not really that different from using mana sense. The only difference is the shifting clarity of the information coming from many different perspectives instead of a constant stream of information from a single source.
As the sun is setting and the stars are appearing I run off the road for a few hundred meters before sitting down on a small and lonely boulder in the open plains, half a meter tall grass swaying all around me. The wind is picking up and dark storm clouds are moving in from the east. I can see a forestline on the southeastern horizon where I’m heading but I know I won’t manage to get there before the storm clouds reach me. Might as well ride it out in the open instead.
I haven’t seen any travelers for an hour or so as they’ve been much slower than me and probably set up camp much further north or south of here. Manifesting my celestial campfire I give it a little extra fuel to burn hotter and brighter, keeping the chill and encroaching darkness at bay.
The golden flames dance in the wind and I’m sure any normal fire would have gone out in mere minutes in this wind. I’m even more sure of it as the absolute torrent of rainfall hits. The water hisses and sizzles as it splashes against the flames, evaporating or burning up.
I shudder slightly as the wind picks up with renewed strength and water goes down between my belt and waist, running towards my crotch. A lightning strike soon follows not too far away from me and the booming thunderclap is almost painfully loud without any obstructions to dampen the sound.
“Can’t you decrease our environmental sensitivity slightly, Ari? We’ll be staying like this all night and I’d like to enjoy a peach and some pipeweed even if the weather doesn’t want to let me.”
She obliges my request and I bring out a peach, enjoying it while just feeling slightly cold and a little damp. The campfire is still feeling like it’s warming me up good though and I could almost say that it’s cozy sitting here in the downpour and storm, lightning striking all around me as the wind whips my loose locks of hair.
It could have been worse? Couldn’t it?
As I throw the well polished peach seed into the fire I pick up the faint sound of boots hitting the soft ground coming from the northeast, carried on the wind towards me. I have no idea who is approaching me but the number of feet hitting the wet grass suggests there to be at least eight of them. Maybe more.
“Should I look or pretend I don’t notice them, Ari?”
“Don’t look their way. We can take them by surprise if we pretend to have our guard down. They might not even be coming here with hostile intentions after all.”
“True. They might just have seen my campfire and wanted to share it.”
I wait with deceptive calmness as my body is flooded with power in preparation for anything. It’s lucky I’m prepared as the next moment I feel someone identifying me before an arrow comes flying straight at my back. A mischievous grin spreads on my lips as I sneakily add telekinetic force to the arrow, making it look like the wind blew it off course.
I continue pretending not to notice the would-be bandits or highwaymen as I continue staring into the flames. I have no idea if they’re going to fall for it. It’s really difficult to miss someone identifying you with a skill as it’s a very intrusive act. It usually grabs the attention of anyone relaxed. The only time it can’t be felt as far as I know is when someone is sufficiently distracted.
It seems I’m in luck as they slowly approach me instead of firing another arrow. I can barely hear them now as they must have activated a sneak skill but since I already knew about them I can just barely pick them out between the howling wind, thunderclaps and smattering rain.
I sense it with my telekinesis first as one of them rushes at me from behind. As my focus snaps at him my new sensor skill gives me a good picture of my would-be assassin. They’re short and thin, wearing a black hood and red bandana. Daggers cover their person and one such dagger, dripping with what must be some sort of poison, is held outstretched in their right hand, coming for my spine.
As the dagger nears its mark I grab hold of the kinetic mana of his hand and bring it straight up with a hard pull. Unsheathing my left dagger in a reverse grip I spin counterclockwise, catching him with my dagger’s tearing edge across his throat and bandana. The bandana isn’t thick enough to serve any other purpose other than hiding their identity and fabric and blood of the same crimson join the rain as I tear it all out.
He drops the poison dagger from the arm still raised above him before grabbing at his throat with his left hand, trying to stench the absolute flood of blood spurting out in jets to the beat of his heart. I get some in my face and mouth as I stand directly in front of him with a smug grin on my face.
My smug grin vanishes as I spit it out with disgust before finishing him off with a clockwise roundhouse kick to the right side of his temple.

“What the fuck?! She got Charles!”
“Get that bitch!
My assailants standing 20 meters away from me roar and charge my way. Another arrow comes straight for me but I apply some telekinetic force, making it miss as I meet their charge with my own, rapidly activating my identification skill.
[Warrior - Level 240]
[Warrior - Level 212]
[Rogue - Level 203]
[Water Mage - Level 173]
[Archer - Level 222]
[Warrior - Level 237]
I don’t manage to get everyone but I don’t think I’ll get any real surprises from the last three who I didn’t have time to identify. As I clash with the first warrior I pull his shortword off course with telekinesis before moving into his guard and stabbing him through the eye. I kick the corpse hard in the stomach with a side kick, sending it flying at the water mage behind before I manifest a missile and send it straight at the archer while simultaniously ducking a blow from a heavy mace coming from behind.
Ding! You have slain [Warrior - Level 237]. More experience awarded.
The added information I get from [Sensors] as my mind focuses on the kinetic mana heading my way from a blindspot complement each other perfectly. It first gives me a clear view of the largest threat and lets me focus in on its source without turning my head.
Without turning I transform my duck into a backwards roll towards the mace holder, springing myself up inside his guard using enhanced arm muscles and kicking him in the chin with my heel from underneath. There’s a satisfying crack and snap as his head jerks back violently.
Ding! You have slain [Warrior - Level 168]. Less experience awarded.
Another arrow comes at my back as I’m upside down in midair. I catch it with more telekinesis and make it pierce the knee of the warrior I’m passing over. I land behind the slowly falling warrior and am about to turn towards the water mage who is just now able to stand up again but am interrupted as a dagger pierces my back.
Where did that come from?
I’m confused for a split second until the rogue who’s standing behind me comes into view in my senses again. They must have some sort of stealth skill that can hide them from mana senses and my basic arcane telekinesis, only being broken after they attack something.
The dagger is poisoned but Ari confirms for me that it’s meant to enter the bloodstream of biological creatures and will do little harm to us. I lunge backwards towards the retreating rogue as I spin in the air trying to orient myself to get a good view on my target but they keep skirting around my back, being really annoying and not letting me see them.
Getting tired of chasing the rogue with arrows coming at me and warriors regrouping to get into a better formation I instead try something new and possibly wasteful. I fill the skull of the rogue behind me with nearly two thousand points of telekinetic force while doing the same to his vertebrae a few segments down, wasting a lot of mana trying to affect something inside his body. The velocity is in two different directions going up and down.
Sounds of tearing flesh, a spine being broken, blood spattering and the rogue's head flying into the air is the confirmation of my theory that using telekinesis recklessly and violently in a body can have very nasty consequences. This is why I hadn’t tried flying yet as I don’t want to experience what that rogue just did.
Ding! You have slain [Rogue - Level 203]. More experience awarded.
I dodge another arrow before charging straight for the archer who is backing away from me, eyes wide as he’d just seen his sneaky friend’s head get torn off his body without me seemingly doing anything. I only grin at him as I approach and manipulate his bow to go straight upwards, giving me a wide opening to gut him.
Ding! You have slain [Archer - Level 222]. More experience awarded.
As my daggers leave the archer's prone form, trailing entrails from the tearing edge, the warriors finally manage to get their formation in order and start surrounding me and their dead archer companion. The water mage is standing in the back behind me, collecting rainwater into a large ball that he slowly moves towards me from my presumed blindspot. I can see it with my sensor skill and I guess he’s either trying to use it as a distraction for when they charge me or to drown me in it.
Drowning people and creatures are water mage’s most common way to kill after all. There are of course other ways they can utilize moisture and water in a battle to great effect but they’re not very strong against someone who manages to negate their attacks or doesn't need to breathe.
“Why the fuck did you start killing us? You’re a madwoman and need to be put down!”
“You said it boss! She’s crazy.”
“Crazy’s still fuckable. Boss will surely share some with us after we’ve cut her head off and he’s done with her.”
“That’s right! I’m reserving her head for when the boss is done. Fucking those lush lips when her eyes have gone vacant will be amazing!”
I know they are only talking to act as a distraction for the water mage, preparing the ambush from behind, but seriously? They want to fuck my corpse? I need to put these animals down right here and now. I’m not even feeling excited about killing these scum anymore and just want to get over with it. I’m too disgusted to put into words.
I check my mana to make sure I won’t drain myself dry before acting out the execution I’ve got planned.
Mana: [6520/6520]
Capacitor: [13755/17864]
If they go down as quickly and easily as the last one then I won’t have to worry as my mana is enough for five of these six bandits. As they keep shouting obscenities and gloating over what they’re going to do to my corpse after they’ve killed me I focus and strain my mind to the limit, tuning it all out.
Using [Multitask] I split my focus between the ten different structures I’ll need to push my arcane mana into. Five skulls and five vertebrae, each getting their own velocity as I open the floodgates to my power and pour 20,000 mana into the attack.
Every warrior that had been shouting at me and trying to act as a distraction goes silent and their previous racket is replaced with the sounds of ripping and tearing of flesh, the snapping of bone and the splattering of blood. I watch in morbid fascination through my sensors as five heads get torn from their shoulders, a few vertebrae following along up the neck as flesh and blood scatter and spurts everywhere. The giant ball of water falls down right behind me as the water mage and sole remaining bandit loses control of his manipulation skill.
I turn around to look at him as heads thud to the ground all around me, bodies dropping soon after. Increasing the golden glow of my eyes enough to blind him I launch myself in his direction, covering the few meters in under a second before piercing his brain from the sides of his head with both daggers. I stare into those horrified eyes and wonder why they seem so genuine in their fading expression.
Had this water mage not caused death like this to other innocent people before? Was this his first run with this band of outlaws? Had he thought his group of homicidal necrophiliacs invincible against a lone girl in a storm or something?
I spit in his face before pulling out my daggers, a few pieces of crania dislodging themselves, and kicking the corpse away from me. Giving them all one last cursory glance I disperse my clothes, letting the rain clean me of their filth as I start running southeast along the road. I couldn’t care less about some storm at the moment as I don’t want to be anywhere near those corpses and I’m certainly not burying them. There might be a bounty on their heads that some lucky traveler gets to collect tomorrow and honestly, they don’t deserve the honor of being buried.
“You sure pulled their rotten souls out by the root.”
“Let’s speed up our run towards the dungeon, Ari. I feel like killing something that just wants to return the favor, not humans who want to defile my corpse.”
