In an enormous mead-hall, only two figures could be seen, a giant who was sitting on a proportionally large wooden throne and in front of him a handsome, if somewhat effeminate young man was prostrating in front of him, and in a soft voice he begged “Great Lord! I beg of you to not hand me over to that usurper! I need to take revenge!”
But to this the giant remained silent, his eyes cold. Yet the youth continued with his begging, even crying at the feet of the giant.
“Do you not know what my father did to ensure peace in this realm? He stopped the constant bloodshed! He-“
“ENOUGH!” the giant interrupted with a deep and powerful voice.
“Do you think that I, Utgard-Hrungnir, enjoy the so call ‘peace’ brought by your cowardly father? I, Utgard-Hrungnir, am a great lord with many warriors under me, yet we are warriors without war! Your coward of a father ruled with cowardly means, such as magic and his inventions, else how do you think a mere incubus became a demon king? He merely had powerful wives! His brilliant inventions were not used for war but to enforce peace!”
The youth tried to refute yet Utgard-Hrungnir merely continued.
“His black powder could be used to destroy forts and walls and attack the human realm! And so many more things! Such a blessing it is for him to be slain! I wanted to eat his flesh! To grind his bones into flour and use it for bread! To make sweet mead out of his blood!”
So Utgard-Hrungnir took a deep breath and his amber eyes became brighter.
“I can eat you! HAHA! I can still relieve some of my anger!
…
In an enormous hall, giants gathered.
Near the wall stood a mighty throne and on it an even mightier figure, the great Utgard-Hrungnir!
In front of him stood two great benches filled with giants and a great fire in between. And the great chief of the giants spoke.
“My brother’s in arms, a great fool came to my abode today! Do you wonder why I call him a fool?”
The amber eyes of the mighty brawler glanced around and as if he saw that nobody knew the answer, he decided to continue with his speech.
“The one I call a fool is quite special! He was taught that his foolishness is normal! Heh, so of course I imprisoned him for my amusement. Fyrnir, you who are called the wisest in my mighty stronghold that even the demons fear, would you guess who the fool is if I gave you a hint?”
“Most certainly, in martial prowess, I believe none are your match, oh great chief, and if you had asked me to test your might with my feeble hands, I would have most certainly refused! Yet in such a matter, I believe I can prove to be of use!”
“Very well Fyrnir! Your words are coated in honey as always! If this continent is united, with its poor soil unable to bear much produce, its land filled with metal and occupied by generation-long feuds that started because of a drop of water, is it possible to keep it peaceful? And is it wise to not invade the human realm?”
“Oh great chief, you whose bravery exceeds even dragons! What foolish question is that? WAIT… Do you have the child of that effeminate demon? That terrible coward whose only contribution is uniting the thousand clans in hate of him?”
“Indeed Fyrnir! I, Utgard-Hrungnir, have the bastard in chains! Should I peel his skin? Cut him piece by piece and send them to the mighty clans of our tainted land? Fyrnir my counselor, tell me, what is the best way to relieve my anger?”
“By Alvaldi! You great warrior! I Fyrnir lived long and served many chiefs, yet they were merely your lessers! But oh great Utgard-Hrungnir, you hunter of beast and demons, tie the child to a large metal rod, and heat it! Weak as the child is, it still won’t die from it! Else its mother would not be that mighty warrior, that fierce demoness!”
“HAHAHA! Your words bring much pleasure to my ears! I shall listen to your suggestion! Now, my brothers-in-arms, let us drink to this!”
The other giants, who were unusually quiet, quickly went into a happy mood and started drinking!
…
Many days later when the giants procured a large enough metal rod and prepared to commence with the torture, unexpected guests arrived.
…
“Hmmm, Is it demons that I smell? But who would dare come to my mighty stronghold? This fortress with its mighty walls and great battlements defied the thieving ambitions of fiends, dragons, and even demon kings! Yet somebody dares visit!” spake the giant chief, lust for battle in his tone.
Yet Fyrnir said immediately after, “Might it be an envoy of Ehud, the demonic usurper? Great one who marshalls the giants, your martial exploits are unparalleled! Yet it is because of them you always expect an attack!”
“Fyrnir truly great your wisdom is! May one of you, my brothers in arms, let the guests in?” spake Utgard-Hrungnir.
“I shall do it!” said a giant, and upon finishing the sentence he rushed to let the guests in.
…
After a bit of time, a few tiny (compared to everything else) figures arrived following an average-sized giant.
“Greetings milord, Great Utgard-Hrungnir! I am Gygas, The head envoy of Friedrich!” Gygas spoke with a great bow, but upon making a closer inspection of the giant chief of whom he only heard of in legend, he was terrified.
What sat in front of him was a huge man, of broad shoulders, with heavily muscled limbs, an enormous beard, amber-eyed and brown-haired. Ehud had seen giants before but none were greater in size than this mighty fellow.
“Speak!”
“Ah-y-yes, My master Friedrich w-wishes to invade the human realm as all p-pr-preparations for a gate spell are completed. So he invites y-your h-honored self!”
“I see! Let him know I shall join in the conquest of that realm!”
“Now, begone! I cannot stand your smell of cowardliness.”
XXX
In the dungeon of the stronghold commanded by the mighty Utgard-Hrungnir, Hiro the spawn of the late demon king cried and whined to no avail.
Water dripped from the ceiling and filled the floor of the mighty dungeon, yet it would at most be up to the ankles of a smaller giant, but to Hiro, who was a mere demon less than 6 feet tall, it was up to the neck, for he was bound in a fetus position.
The giants never had such a tiny prisoner so they took many precautions, else Hiro could have escaped through the iron bars that separated each cell.
‘Will I drown in this water? A flower that has yet to bloom must wither! Oh, how sad my end shall be!”
And while he was wallowing in self-pity, the giants drank much mead to celebrate their future conquests!
…
A cruel storm was hovering over the demonic realm! Black clouds were gathered in such an exaggerated amount many were frightened!
Yet none would have guessed how much of a greater calamity it was than a mere thunderstorm!
Valland! The great ship made of clouds! A terrible fortress from a more bloody time, where many fell and none who ventured returned! Even dragons could only watch in greed for they were repelled many times without trouble!
From that unconquerable fortress in the sky, the revelry of the giants could be heard, and a mighty voice sang:
Twas time's first dawn.
When naught yet was,
Nor sand nor sea,
Nor cooling wave;
Earth was not there,
Nor heaven above.
Naught save the Valland.
But verdure none.
The poem was crudely made, yet its content was frightening!
For a few days, the giants traveled with their ship of black clouds, misty vapor covering the land in their wake.
Constantly they sang and the clouds bellowed to accompany their fear-inducing voices.
Many of the humongous humanoid brutes were wrestling, some amused themselves with clubs and other armaments, and many threw rocks and boulders. But these activities were done with such vigor that any observer would be terrified!
And how did giants procure rocks and other earthborn materials in their mighty sky fortress?
They didn’t, for some of them were simply sent down to the land to bring them up.
But finally, the day when the mighty giants arrived at the capital arrived.
…
A good few furlongs in front of the demonic capital, the mighty ship-fortress of clouds, Ginungagap, stopped!
It was truly a mighty construct, for it was a stone fort built on clouds, yet it was filled with many rooms for the amusement of the giants.
But it was not long until a rope thicker than trees dropped from it, and soon two dozen or so giants climbed down, with the leading one being Utgard-Hrungnir.
It was merely a small retinue, yet their great march made the earth tremble.
But at the front gates of the famous city, the giants stopped their march, as there was a tiny man who was not even tall enough to reach their knees.
Indeed, even the mighty Utgard-Hrungnir (who had something made of iron in his left hand) looked at the tiny humanoid, before cracking a smile.
“Friedrich, my friend! You do not know how much pleasure I had upon receiving the invitation! And of learning of you coup!”
“HAHA, I am glad that my little deed pleased you, oh mighty chief!” Friedrich said with a smile.
“Hmm? Are you making fun of me, the mighty Utgard-Hrungnir?”
“Of course not! Why would I? Now let us enter the place of the meeting, and it is a bit far away to accommodate the large size of some of our allies!”
Then Fyrnir spoke quietly to Utgrad-Hrungnir’s ear:
“Great chief! It is not wise to be unprepared, and as the ancients said:
Scan every gate
Ere thou go on,
With the greatest caution;
For hard to say 'tis
Where foes are sitting
In this fair mansion.
So I believe that it would be wise to arm your thanes!”
And Utgard-Hrungnir listened to the ancient wisdom and commanded his retinue to be ready for battle at any moment.
…
Soon they arrived at the meeting place of the allied lords of the land! Indeed, when they could plunder weaker foes, these fiendish beings would most certainly unite!
There were many lords and many retinues of said lords, for there were thousands of tribes but they all spoke the same language created in a time so ancient nobody remembers.
First spoke Friedrich, the usurper: “Hear me ye Lords of the thousand clans! As you all know a decade ago that cowardly being became a demon king, yet we could do nothing but obey him due to the fact that only the demon king, chosen by the mark, can use the gate spell!”
Many wondered why Ehud spoke the information they all knew, but he continued speaking nonetheless.
“Now you might be wondering why I spoke such facts, and why I said I prepared for a gate spell! It was due to the fact that I, Friedrich, obtained the demon king’s mark! I got tired of listening to his ramblings of eternal peace and challenged him to a duel, yet the coward refused and hid behind his wives who wanted to fight in his stead! For you see, my dear allies, the demon king needs to be worthy of the mark! Yet none of us knew that! Many wondered why such a coward got the mark and I had learned of all the reasons! He seemed promising due to His inventions yet because of the fact he was so cowardly in His means He had lost it!”
Many were silent with endless fury, for they waited for decades, centuries even, for a demon king to be chosen, so they could enjoy the fruits borne of the human realm, yet they could have simply slain the demon.
“Mighty Friedrich, when shall we assemble our hosts? To wreak havoc onto the humans is a wish many share and our patience has worn off over the reign of that coward!”
The one who spoke was but one of the many lords, yet his words were true for the vast majority.
“Worry not, for all the preparations have indeed been completed, so we can go to war as soon our hosts assemble!”
Upon hearing the words of the new demon king joy was abundant among the lords and so they dispersed in many directions to mobilize.

After the happy occasion that happened(the occasion being the sacrifice of the former demon king’s son) the resident of the demonic continent organized themselves, with the chief commander being none other than Utgard-Hrungnir, and the subordinates entrusted with the duty to make his commands wide heard spoke to the masses “Hear the edicts of the mighty chief Utgard-Hrungnir!
To those who are faint hearted: leave the army to not make their comrades lose their courage!
To those who wish not to cause unnecessary violence: leave the army to not weaken the arms of your comrades!
To those who are newly wedded: leave the army to not have your partner be enjoyed by another!
To those who are untruthful: leave the army to not cover the merits and demerits of your comrades!
Those are the edicts of the mighty chief Utgard-Hrungnir!”
Upon dismissing such men from the army, Utgard-Hrungir divided them into battalions and platoons.
And so they went on a campaign!
…
First, under the command of the mighty chief, they went to war with the duchy of Arrowhill, for it was the place they first arrived.
They stormed the unprepared duchy, with the soldiers of the thousand tribes being very fierce, and upon meeting barely any resistance, they almost effortlessly overthrew the duchy.
Then under the chief commander’s orders, they crossed a river and under the command of Farbauti, a thane of Utgard-Hrungnir turned general for the occasion they utterly destroyed the fortress city of Eldercrest in such a way: the giants hurled boulders at the city, destroying its battlements and suppressing the city’s forces enough for the lesser greenskins to storm the walls.
The conquered area turned into a stronghold for the thousand tribes, where they recruited local intelligent clans that were descendants of earlier expeditions.
Word spread quickly on the human continent and the local rulers summoned all the men they could, for according to them the thousand tribes only want the destruction of the human race, which was true but unachievable under past kings.
There were 10 human kings who first joined forces and met the thousand tribes under the command of Utgard-Hrungnir, and the battle was extremely bloody yet the chief commander still achieved victory.
The battle happened as such: The human kings encamped on a shore of a river, for they were used to human warfare and it was a prime place for defense, but the thousand tribes had battalions of flying tribesmen, the mightiest of whom were the giant birds that dropped many weapons created by encasing black power mixed with scraps of metal in iron balls. It was an invention of Fyrbyr, and under Utgard-Hrungnir’s command, the warriors of the thousand tribes stormed the encampment left starved and tired under the constant bombardment. The men fled over the river, and many lost their lives trying to cross the river, in fact, the river was blocked by the many bodies, with blood flowing instead of water!
After the battle, an altar was erected by Utgard-Hrungnir in honor of Alvaldi.
Then the army of the thousand tribes smote the alliance of a hundred guilds, a confederation of mercantile city-states.
Much treasure was seized and many slaves were captured.
Thus the first year of the expedition concluded.
…
In the second year, the land conquered was fortified, and reinforcements arrived from the demonic continent.
A mountain was destroyed for the sake of getting enough stone for the fortification.
A human invasion occurred and was subsequently defeated.
The river of Ashap was subdued.
Thus the second year of the expedition ended.
…
In the third year, the expedition was resumed.
The kingdom of Rosebrook was conquered, and its population was exterminated.
A host led by greenskin chief Blechacz was defeated by the black-haired human hero and Blechacz was slain in battle.
A host led by flying tribeswoman Yagmur was defeated by the black-haired human hero and Yagmur was captured.
A host led by Esea the Fair was defeated by the black-haired human hero and Esea the Fair was captured
Utgard-Hrungnir personally took action and with his mighty hand he smote the black-haired human hero, demoralizing the human army and further expanding the realm of the thousand tribes.
A praise poem in honor of Utgard-Hrungnir was composed by Utgard-Hrungnir:
”
I rain battle like thunder from the heavens
With my roar heaven and earth shake
Mountains lay low trembling where I step
I am the most heroic of the thousand tribes
Cloaked in terror, invincible in a duel!
“
Yagmur and Esea the fair were executed due to interfering with the extermination of a human city.
Local tribesmen rebelled in the kingdom of Reddan rebelled against humans, and an army was sent as support.
A league of 30 rulers was formed.
Fortifications were built.
Thus ended the third year of the campaign.
…
In the fourth year, the expedition was resumed.
The demon king Friedrich arrived.
He organized several attacks on human territory and due to his mighty sorcery, he proved victorious.
A saint appeared in the human kingdom of Zaralid.
The saint was slain by Farbauti in combat.
The kingdom of Zaralid was conquered.
The demon king subdued the magic islands of Salalma.
A fortress was built.
Thus ended the third year of the campaign.
…
In the fifth year, the expedition resumed.
Under the command of Fyrnir, a census was held.
The land, forests, marshes, mountains, lakes… were measured.
The kingdom of elves was destroyed, its wood was of very high quality.
Otherworldly human heroes appeared.
Thus ended the fifth year of the expedition.
…
In the sixth year, the expedition was resumed.
The league of 30 kings was conquered under the direct command of Utgard-HJrungnir.
Most of the lands were conquered.
Under the command of Fyrnir, a census was held.
The land, forests, marshes, mountains, lakes… were measured.
The demon king Friedrich was slain by the otherworldly human heroes.
The otherworldly human heroes severely wounded Utgard-Hrungnir but in the end, he smote them all with his mighty hand.
Utgard-Hrungnir became the demon king.
A fortress was built.
Thus ended the sixth year of the expedition.
…
In the seventh year, the expedition was resumed.
The remaining human lands were conquered.
Under the command of Fyrnir, a census was held.
The land, forests, marshes, mountains, lakes… were measured.
All in all, 187 lands were conquered. The thousand tribes were victorious.
Thus the seventh and the last year of the expedition ended!
