Chapter 9: Penultimate

Cody was still trapped in his cell. He thought to himself how bored he was. A mind so great should not be trapped within three walls and some vertical lines. It felt like days. He was sure that he had slept at least twice.

Then he heard it. It was a sonic boom being created by the huge invisible planet entering the earth's atmosphere. Todd had done it! Perhaps this story has a happy ending after all, thought Cody. He started fantasizing about all the money he would get from selling this invisible rock to everyone. Surely, he would never have to work with that beastly Andy again. He could live out his days in perpetual vacation with Todd, his beloved.

No more dealing with red-believers. Maybe he could even lobby the government to pass a law against believing in the color red. He could put Andy in jail. Where he belonged, honestly. Anyone who had ever wronged him too. Imagine putting Kire in jail... The thought was so sweet that he started salivating. He could throw green paint on anyone! Anyone! All the money and influence in the world could finally right the wrongs red-believing society had thrust on him.

The sound started to grow deafening. It was the sweet sound of money. The invisible planet was coming closer. Todd had surely realized exactly what his message meant.

I had just pulled our car over and started checking my phone. Why is the sky growing darker? Why is everyone else pulling over too? Then it hit me. Mars really is hitting the earth today.

"Kire?"

"Give me the whiteboard. And keep driving, even if it's the last thing you do."

It took me a while to process things. The stress was starting to make me freeze up. But I knew what I needed to do.

I started driving again. In the rearview I saw Kire furiously writing.

After brief talks with the higher-ups, I managed to secure whiteboard funding again. And with not a moment to lose. Cody has almost accomplished his goal. Now it is only me who can stop him.

It's a bit scary, because now the general public knows what is going on. But we people from the supernatural containment force are trained to never freeze in the sight of danger. I trained my entire life for this moment. I can't mess up. The fate of the entire world rests on my shoulders.

Todd was in the atmosphere. Earth's gravity was already starting to assist him. He was accelerating.

Then Kire came out of nowhere and slashed Todd with his huge whiteboard marker sword. Without any green paint to protect him, Todd was cut in two. Kire tried to think of a clever quip for this moment of victory, but his red mind was too beastly to think of anything.

In fact, his red-believer mind did not even think about the fact it was too late. The great invisible planet was accelerating towards the Earth at a rapid pace without Todd's help.

Meanwhile, Cody sensed in his heart that something had gone terribly wrong. He knew in his heart what had happened. Todd had died for him. He had paid the ultimate price for Cody's victory. Cody wept as the sonic boom grew louder.

BAM!

The huge invisible planet busted open the jail cell. Because the Earth was green-colored, its surface did not yield to the great rock and instead let it rest in its huge invisible not-red glory. In fact, it rested squarely on Cody's head, preventing anyone else from being crushed. One thing Cody forgot to consider, despite his genius, was that the shock waves generated by such a large body entering the atmosphere would cause everyone to go deaf. Thankfully, the upside to this was that Cody would never have to listen to Andy rant again. Plus, because Cody was so smart, there was no one really worth listening to anyway.

Cody held up the great mass of invisible rock with his right hand and smiled.
