Chapter 17: I win

The clown and William were at an impasse in their battle. Neither of them had a consistent way of taking the other down because their abilities canceled each other out.

However, there was one element that the clown had forgotten, and William had not.

The clown appeared from the flames he threw, but William was already waiting for him. He fired an Air Bullet as he backed away, having gotten quite used to the Nighthawk's unearthly reflexes.

William deflected the bullet with his sword and closed the distance with a dash. He made a diagonal cut, straight to the clown's neck. He managed to avoid it by flipping backward, further validating his appearance.

This was what William had expected. With a quick step forward he advanced two meters in the blink of an eye. The sword followed a vertical path, from bottom to top. The clown, who was still completing his backflip in the air, saw this. Showing impeccable control over his body, the clown deflected the sword by striking it to the side, thus changing its trajectory.

Surprisingly, William was unfazed and launched a horizontal kick, hitting the clown's rib cage. He let out a small grunt of pain and flew a few feet before landing on his feet.

'I win.'

Bang!

The sound of a shot was heard. The bullet had hit neither William nor the clown. Klein got up slowly, his revolver still smoking a little.

The clown looked incredulously at the well-dressed boy, then at the object that had just fallen next to him. His eyes widened in horror at the sight of the puppet, 2-049.

Instinctively, he wanted to move away to escape the Sealed Artifact, but his thoughts began to slow down.

"Shoot!" William yelled at Klein.

If they didn't act fast, the clown could escape the range of 2-049 by using the paper figurine substitution technique. Klein had understood as well, so he pulled the trigger again.

Bang!

A bullet went through his neck. Blood began to spurt out. The clown made a move to cover his wound, but he couldn't move anymore because of 2-049.

Bang!

Another shot, and this time it went through his forehead. The clown fell to the ground, his gaze lifeless and with an expression of disbelief and horror.

'Sigh, it's finally over.' William sighed wearily. This had been his first fight. He saw things that he had previously believed impossible. His physical exhaustion added to his mental exhaustion, which made him exhausted.

He was so tired that he didn't even notice the man with a golden beard and hair, dressed in a simple white cloak, who walked away as soon as the fight was over.

He walked over to the unconscious Dunn Smith, placing Debris on his waist. Beside him, Klein was handing out medicine that Aiur had given him upon waking up.

"Hey, Captain, good morning, even though it's night." He patted his shoulder and Dunn squirmed a bit before opening his eyes.

"Looks like I was knocked unconscious by that explosion." He stood up, a little unsteady. "Has something happened?"

William nodded.

"Klein and I defeated that clown who got away at the beginning." He did not try to hide this fact, the body was a few meters from them, perfectly in sight.

Dunn looked at him in surprise, then looked at Klein, who was talking to Leonard.

"That Beyonder was probably a Sequence 7. How did you defeat him?" As he spoke, he pulled extremely thick gloves from his pocket and reached for the Antigonus Family's Notebook.

"I stayed in close combat with him, which seemed to be his weak point." He didn't reveal anything about Debris. "I inched toward 2-049, and Klein finished the job by shooting the Sealed Device. We were lucky he didn't miss, it landed close to him, and then we just had to finish him off.

Dunn narrowed his eyes, as if he were imagining the scene, and nodded in acknowledgment.

"Good job, you'll probably get a raise for this, maybe seven or eight pounds."

William stroked his forehead in bewilderment. He didn't have to take care of anyone and had a pretty simple lifestyle, so he didn't know what to do with this sudden wealth.

Of course, he could use it to buy Beyonder ingredients, but those were too expensive to be worth buying, instead of trading them to the church for contribution points.

'Well, I guess I'll save it. I'll also invite Klein and Old Neil again one of these days, maybe even the Captain can come this time.'

"Come with me, we will take the notebook to Chanis Gate, and there we will say goodbye to Aiur and the others." Dunn motioned for him to follow, which he did.

They didn't forget to put 2-049 back in the chest, waking each other up every time their movements slowed.

For some reason, the walk back seemed much shorter for William. Perhaps it was because he was no longer so eager to have to fight for the first time, or perhaps because this mission had given him a certain amount of experience. It didn't matter, it was probably a mixture of both.

The clown's corpse was being brought in for inspection by Frye, a member of the Tingen Nighthawks William had met on one of his guards at Chanis Gate. The man was extremely white, so much so that he looked like a ghost. He had a cold and stern look. However, when William talked more with him, he realized that he was much more warm-hearted than he seemed at first, and cared for his colleagues.

'If I'm not mistaken, Frye is a Beyonder on the Corpse Collector pathway. That is one of the pathways for which the church has many Sequence formulas. I wonder how many types of Beyonder there are.' After saying goodbye to everyone, William walked toward his house. 'That guy, Klein. I didn't expect that he wasn't a formal member yet. He recruited me, and I have more experience than him as a Nighthawk.'

He let out a laugh, and luckily no one was on the street, or they might have considered him crazy.
