Chapter 24: A Bunch of Miserable Wretches

"I see. I think I once heard that Assassin pathway Sequence 8 has a similar ability." Dunn Smith wrote down the information William had given him on a form. "We'll need to test the effects and to what extent it affects the Beyonders."

William nodded absently. His encounter with the mysterious priest was still bothering him, plus he felt it would be better not to mention it to the Captain so as not to expose him to unnecessary danger.

"Is something bothering you, William?" Dunn's question surprised the young man because although he was kind-hearted, the Captain didn't usually express his concern in this way.

He shook his head.

"It's nothing, I was just remembering something." He answered, deciding that lying might not work on Dunn Smith, given his years of experience.

It seemed to be the right thing to do as he gave him a rare sympathetic smile.

"If it's because of the battle you had, don't worry. In the end, the important thing is that you survived and even left the assassin alive so we could extract information from him. It was a great job." He said, and hearing these words from the Captain cheered William up a bit, though he wasn't thinking about it. "However, don't let your guard down. I have a mission for you right now, and I need you alert and prepared at all times."

William was reminded of Mad-Eye Moody's constant vigilance, from his previous world. He chuckled a little internally as he imagined Dunn Smith with the magic eye and Moody's wacky look.

"Have we already received a mission? I thought they were quite rare, and there were weeks when we didn't have any work." For some reason, William felt insecure about this sudden amount of work.

It could be chance, but something inside him was a little anxious.

'Should I investigate this following my instincts?' The answer would normally be no because he would waste time simply on a hunch. At least it would be that way if he wasn't a Beyonder. 'Debris, if you notice anything strange I need you to tell me.'

There was a brief silence before the sword spoke.

"I'm not sure, but I've also been noticing something weird. It's hard to notice because I think it's been there almost since we met." William listened to the Captain, who was talking about how he also found the number of missions strange, while he listened to Debris' reply. The words she said almost made him jump.

'Why didn't you warn me before?' His face turned a little severe and Dunn noticed.

"Darling...I think it's best if we stay away from whatever's going on. I have a bad feeling."

A chill ran down William's spine. Debris had never said anything like that to her before, not even when she fought the assassin or the suited clown. He believed that following Debris's advice would be the wisest thing to do, but he couldn't leave the matter to chance either.

"Captain, I have a bad feeling about this." He didn't want to talk about Adam, but trusting Dunn with this was probably the best he could do. "I feel like there's more going on than there should be in a small town like Tingen, and all in a very short time frame."

Dunn folded his hands on the table and turned a little thoughtful.

"Well, it's true that there are a lot of coincidences lately." However, he didn't seem too worried. "I'll keep an eye out for more of these happenings, if it gets too complicated we can always call in a high-ranking Beyonder from the Church."

William sighed, calmer than before, knowing that he didn't need to handle something like this.

"Anyway, what is that mission you were telling me about?" With one less weight on his back, he decided to go with the flow for the time being.

"It's a long-term mission, it might take a while to complete since it's about finding someone." He took out some papers with very impressive drawings of a man. "The man you brought didn't speak, but we managed to elicit information from him through divination. In his memories, there are two members of the Theosophy Order in Tingen, though one of them we know next to nothing about because they only communicated through cards. This man is another member."

William looked at the drawing of the man, he had a round and friendly face.

"So I have to find this guy?" He asked.

Surprisingly, Dunn shook his head.

"This person's name is Tris, and we already tried to capture him, but failed. He's probably gone somewhere else since then." He explained with some remorse remembering how Tris had outsmarted them. "We need you to find the other person."

Williams was confused.

"Didn't you say you don't know anything about him?" He questioned.

"We know something. He is actually a woman, one who is perfectly literate, and most likely he has infiltrated the upper class of Tingen." He explained. "We don't have any pictures of her, nor do we have her name, but at least we know that."

William scratched his chin.

"I guess I can try to work with that, though it will be tricky, and I'll have to find a way to sneak into some high society parties." She pondered aloud.

"Don't worry about that, we'll take care of that aspect for you." The Captain assured him, dismissing William's concerns. "Besides, you don't need to rush. In case you find her, don't fight. Come back quickly and report her identity."

Williams nodded.

"Alright, Captain." He put on his hat and prepared to leave.

As he was about to walk out the door, Dunn's voice stopped him.

"Oh, William." The aforementioned turned to look at him. "Remember that we are guardians, but also a bunch of miserable wretches that are constantly fighting against threats and madness. Don't put too much worry behind your back, that's an almost sure way to lose control."

Although the Captain's words were not encouraging, William felt his confidence and determination grow stronger.

"Thank you, Captain. See you." And he left.
