Chapter 26: Sanity Before the Power

"Are you kidding?" Dunn Smith looked at him without any emotion on his face.

"No, I've already digested the potion." Unlike the Captain, William was smiling. He was very happy to finally be ready to move on to the next Sequence.

"How can you be so sure?" Dunn frowned.

William wasted no time explaining what he had felt moments ago. "It's hard to describe, but I felt a strange sensation throughout my body as if something had completely disappeared. After that, I instinctively knew that the potion had been digested."

There was a long silence in the room. Dunn Smith rubbed his forehead in thought as to what to do.

"If it's true, then I can assure you that the Church will get you the necessary materials for Sequence 8." He commented after a while.

William looked at him curiously.

"So easy?" He had expected that he would have to go through many procedures before being promoted.

Dunn gave him a quick nod. "You've made enough contributions to deserve it. Of course, this is only because you need to reach Sequence 8 and not anything higher." He started to write a letter without stopping talking. "Someone of high rank will come to see if you have really digested the potion. We could save time if you knew the formula."

He looked at him out of the corner of his eye and controlled himself to sigh at William's expression.

"I... actually got the formula." At least he had the decency to scratch his cheek in embarrassment.

"You're a scoundrel, did you know that?" He spoke in jest, though William could tell there was a grain of truth in his words. "William, at least answer this for me, please..."

He looked him straight in the eye, and William noticed that he looked tired, he wasn't sure if it was because of this conversation or something else.

"Have you contacted any unknown entity to get the formula?" The question hit the young Beyonder like a hammer.

The Captain had been nothing but nice to him since he joined the Nighthawks. It could be said that he was the boss of all the Tingen Nighthawks, but none of them felt that way. To them, Dunn Smith was something of an older brother on the team.

He was stern and always trying to keep his distance, but the real him came out often enough for them to know how much he truly treasured them all.

"Captain, I can't answer that question." He answered. Dunn immediately tensed, but William didn't stop talking. "However, I can assure you of one thing. I value my sanity and my life more than any kind of power I could get."

Dunn's eyes widened before returning to normal. The difference is that he was no longer tense at all.

"I see, then tell me the formula. I'll write it down in the letter so they can get the materials before they send someone to examine you." He looked back at the letter he was writing.

William smiled in relief and gave a small nod.

"20 milligrams of Werewolf hair and a Murloc gill. Like the Sequence above, it has no complementary ingredients." He knew that in other circumstances, he could give the Church the formula for earning contribution points, but he had neither the desire nor the heart to demand more from the man in front of him.

Dunn quickly jotted it down and folded the letter before slipping it into an envelope.

"The ingredients are not too complicated, it should take a week at most." The Captain informed him. "Have you made any progress in the investigation?"

"Not at the moment, but I spoke to Member of Parliament John Maynard today, and he invited me to a party he's throwing himself. I'm pretty hopeful about this one, as it seems he'll be inviting a lot of the upper class, and other famous or important people in Tingen." He gave his report for the day, so he could save himself from having to go from his house to Blackthorn Security Company the next day just to say these words.

"John Maynard?" He seemed to struggle for a second to remember the person. "Oh yeah, I saw him once during a bodyguard mission. I don't have much information on what he's like, though."

"Hmm." William thought back to his talk with the guy. "He doesn't seem like a bad guy, although he's as fake as all politicians. Still, he seems to be honest about his ideology."

"Is that so? The truth is that I have never been very concerned about politics." Dunn commented.

William let out a chuckle. "Politics in Tingen doesn't affect our lives, but it's different from international politics. I wonder what the king is like." George Augustus III was very private and hardly ever appeared in public, so William was a little curious about it.

The Captain looked at him emotionlessly. "I've never seen him in person, he's also a believer in Lord of Storms, so he doesn't have a very good relationship with us. The seven Orthodox Churches tolerate each other and can even have some friendship between them, but our beliefs differ widely."

Williams nodded. He had read about how the members of each Church thought, and they were very different from each other. Believers in Lord of Storms, for example, were generally quite conservative people or sailors who had faith that their God would help them at sea, which it probably could.

"By the way, I've heard that you dropped those studies you were doing to become a teacher." Dunn surprised William with the information he had. "Are you sure about it?"

William let out a laugh.

"It was hard for me to decide because one of the teachers had helped me a lot, but I think this is the best." He put his hat back on, ready to go. "The party date should be in a week or two. I'll keep an eye out for anything else until then. Constant vigilance, Captain."

Dunn watched him go with a smile.

'This guy has made that phrase his way of life. It's really tiring to deal with all these guys.' His thoughts reminded all of his former colleagues. 'Leonard, Klein, and also William. They all have a unique aura about them. I hope you don't end up like this silly Captain...'
