Chapter 28: Just Acting

As Crestet began to open the silver suitcase, William noticed with amazement how all the light in the room began to be drawn towards the artifact.

'This is a demigod-level Artifact...' The environment presented a strange kind of darkness as if it was daytime, but there was no light. It was something difficult to describe.

William's attention was focused entirely on the bone sword that was revealed inside the suitcase. It was... white, there was no other way to describe it.

In the blackness of the room, the bone sword formed a horizon that divided the darkness. Tiny engraved patterns could be seen on its surface, an infinity of them.

An unknown will tried to hold William back so he couldn't look away.

'It is a good sword; however... 'He was about to direct his hand at Debris but controlled himself not to reveal it to Crestet Cesimir. 'I can't help but think that something about Debris feels even more mysterious.'

He tore his gaze from the sword and looked at the high-ranking deacon. Crestet was inwardly surprised at how little effect the sword had had on him, but put it down to his pathway, which involved swords.

"Okay, I need you to touch this sword." He indicated it.

William did as he was told, placing his right hand on the glowing Artifact. The touch of the sword felt otherworldly, it made nostalgic thoughts appear in his head.

"Recite after me." Crestet gave another direction, and William followed her.

“Oh, Evernight Goddess, nobler than the stars and more eternal than eternity.

“I swear to you in my real name and my spirituality.

"I, William, will never reveal the details of the 'acting method' to those who do not know of it from this moment forth.

“If I go against this, I shall accept any punishment you deem fit.

“Please witness my oath.”

They pronounced almost at the same time the oath in the Hermes language. William's eyes widened as he felt a connection form that hadn't existed before with a being far away and unknown.

'Th-this is... the Evernight Goddess?' Though he wasn't sure, he instinctively knew, plus the oath used the Goddess as an intermediary. "Praise the Lady."

Immediately he touched his chest four times in a clockwise direction, symbolizing the crimson moon, and Crestet Cesimir did the same.

They went to sit back in their respective chairs to continue the conversation.

"Okay, you already know a good part of the Acting Method, so I'll just mention something important for you to remember in the future." He crossed his arms and adopted a solemn pose. "The different pathways usually represent something, the names of the Sequences can always relate to each other in their same group. The further a Beyonder advances in his Sequence, the more he becomes what the pathway represents."

William considered this new information. 'So most likely many will lose control of their powers due to losing themselves earlier.'

"The name of the Sequence is the key to discovering the secrets of the Acting Method, but many end up forgetting their true personalities and become the character they were representing." Crestet paused briefly to convey the seriousness of such a situation. "When a Beyonder loses himself, it's only a matter of time before he loses control as well."

Williams nodded. "I suppose it is essential to know how to differentiate what is acting and what is real."

It was something terrible, and the Beyonders needed to know themselves perfectly, a failure could be lethal. Perhaps that was why the Acting Method was not known to the general public.

"That's how it is." Crestet confirmed. "Anyway, I'll have to talk to the Captain of this team later so he can gather all the members who have heard about it."

William was glad that Dunn had probably already talked to most of them.

"First, however, I must say the following: Nighthawk William Hastur, I announce in the name of the Goddess that you have passed the exam of the Holy Cathedral. With your contributions, you can immediately advance to Sequence 8."

William was relieved, everything had gone much better than he expected.

"Thank you, Your Grace."

Crestet nodded. "Remember that you must use your new powers to better protect our fellow believers, that will help you against the temptation to lose control."

He turned and opened his suitcase again. The darkness returned, but now William could see two elements that he hadn't seen before because he focused too much on the bone sword.

"I have brought the materials you requested. I must admit I am curious about this new pathway that the Church did not know about." Crestet picked up a jar filled with black hair and what looked like fish gills but were much larger.

"Do you know how much pure water is needed for the potion?" He asked as he placed a black metal pot on the table.

"80mL." He replied immediately.

Crestet distilled water over and over, which is how pure water was formed. And finally, he poured the ingredients into the pot.

The potion turned red, and a roar seemed to echo from within. Then, they poured the liquid into a glass bottle.

"Ah, I haven't said that before. I'll need your help after I drink the potion." William turned to Crestet Cesimir. "Because of the potion, it seems that I will enter a state of rage for 2 minutes in which I will have to try not to lose control. I need you to hold me in the meantime. I promise that I will not lose control."

The member of the Red Gloves raised an eyebrow, as this was a bit like the rituals that had to be done to move up the Sequence from Sequence 5.

"Alright."

And William brought the potion to his mouth, drinking it whole. His eyes instantly turned red, and veins stood out all over his body. He raised his head into the air and let out an animal roar.

This was Sequence 8: Berserker.
