Chapter 20

this is a fictional story by realTensai

I had killed them all. I had gotten my revenge. Still, I didn't feel very special. It was exactly the same as after I had killed the scientist, neither was I happy nor sad or horrified. All I felt was emptiness. However, they were now dead and the world became a better place. Killing such dangerous people was the duty of a policeman! It was my duty!

In order not to leave any traces, I burned their corpses. Maybe there would be problems if someone found out I had killed them, so I cleaned up the mess.

I made my way back to the bar. The streets were empty now, except for a few drunken people who were making their way home. When I arrived at the inn, there wasn't as much going on as before. The bartender asked me where the other people that I left with were, but I only answered that they had gone home. Then she took me to the room that Jane had rented for me. The money for that I will definitely give back to her.

I received the keys and entered. It was a somewhat smaller room that only had a bed to sleep on and a table. But of course, there was also a bathroom. First I put off all my things before I then threw myself on my bed. I used quite some cosmo energy to kill John and Co. but at the moment I didn't feel like replenishing it. I could do that tomorrow. Now I wanted to sleep first.

When I got up the next day had come. I went downstairs to get something to eat. When I got downstairs, I saw Jane talking to the bartender. On the way to them, they noticed me too.

"Hey Damion, finally awake too?"

"Have I been asleep this long?"

"It's already noon."

Ah, I didn't know that. I sat down next to her and ordered something to eat. Most of the dishes on the menu were fish dishes, so I ordered fish with some vegetables. It didn't take long until I got the food. It smelled relatively good and also looked good, so I expected a lot. After I tasted it, I was not disappointed. It tasted good.

"What did you actually have to do yesterday?" Jane asked me, who until just now was talking to the bartender.

"I met some acquaintances and had a chat with them," I replied as I continued to eat. To tell her that I killed the people who enslaved me would be unnecessary. This answer is enough. since she did not ask further, we started a new topic.

"What is the plan? When are we going to take the ship to the land of science?" I asked Jane, who wanted to take care of the information retrieval.

"The next ship is scheduled to leave tonight. Until then we still have to get tickets."

So tonight, that's earlier than I thought. I guess we're lucky. Getting a ticket on such short notice could prove to be difficult, but with enough money, it should be doable. We should probably get going right away.

After I had finished eating, we set off to buy a ticket. We took all our stuff with us since we didn't plan to come back to the inn. At first, we went to the harbor. It was not long before we arrived that we were greeted by a fresh ocean breeze.

There was a lot going on here by the ocean. Everywhere were fishermen and sailors who were at work. A lot of ships were in the harbor and were being prepared for departure. The goods of the cargo ships were diligently unloaded from the ship. In general, everyone seemed very busy.

We walked a bit along the harbor, looking for someone who could help us buy a ticket. However, since they were all so busy, we didn't want to disturb them. Luckily, we saw a store whose name was "ship tickets". Immediately we went there.

When we arrived at the store, we saw a reception desk, where surely the tickets are sold. It did not look much different than in my world. Since there was no queue, we could immediately go to the reception.

"Two tickets for the trip to the Cosmo Science Republic please."

The receptionist looked at some paperwork before she spoke, "The next ship doesn't leave for three weeks. Do you want to buy the tickets ahead of time anyway?"

Not for three weeks? Jane said there's another ship coming in today. Does that mean that the tickets are already sold out? Jane, who seemed to have come to the same conclusion, began to ask,

"I take it that all the tickets for the trip today are sold out?"

"That's right. Just like all the other trips that are in the near future. But there are still tickets for the trip in three weeks, but if you don't hurry, they'll be gone too."

Damn what now? The land of cosmo scientists seems to be a very popular destination. But I don't feel like waiting here for three weeks before the next ship finally sails. That means we have to buy tickets from passengers. Jane just looked at me and asked what we should do now. I just replied that we should look around town for people to buy tickets from in the city.

We left the store and went in search of a ticket. Walking through the city, we asked people if they had a ticket for the trip to the Cosmo Science Republic. But so far all answers were no. We decided to split up in order to search for a ticket more efficiently. We decided that we would meet at the port about an hour before departure.

My strategy was to ask people at overnight accommodations. People who were heading to the Cosmo Science Republic were bound to be travelers, so I asked where such travelers spend the night. In fact, I soon found the first people who had a ticket, but they did not want to sell it. Even after I offered a price higher than the one they had paid, their opinion did not change. They all knew how long one had to wait for a ride and they obviously didn't desire that.

When the appointed time had come, I went back to the port. It did not take long until I met Jane. But unfortunately, we both were not able to get a ticket. Did we really have to wait three weeks?

We walked a bit along the harbor, but without a real destination. We talked about whether we would wait the three weeks, but it seemed like we had no other choice. Suddenly, however, a somewhat older gentleman approached us.

"I heard you are looking for tickets for the trip to the Republic." spoke the old man, who did not look like a fisherman, but still like a sailor.

"Yes we are, do you have one for us?" I asked immediately, but he just shook his head.

"My cargo ship is going to the island of Meteorite, then from there to find a ship to the republic would be much easier," the man claimed.

The island "Meteorite" was a smaller island, which was situated between the land of Scientists and the port of Durania. The ships that wanted to go to the republic made a stop on this island. The island is called Meteorite because the first meteorite conqueror came from this island. From there it would be easier to reach our destination. Does that mean he would take us with his cargo ship?

"So you want to take us on your cargo ship?" asked Jane, with a somewhat suspicious tone.

I was pretty sure there was some hitch, too.

"Yes, that's what I'm planning to do. But there is something I need you to do."

Of course.

"Lately, pirate attacks on cargo ships have been on the rise so I need adventurers to defend my ship from pirates. Actually, I had already hired a group of adventurers, but I have not been able to reach them since this morning. It is quite obvious that you are adventurers and definitely not weak ones, that's what I can see. How about I take you to the island of Meteorite and you defend my goods in case of an attack?"

I just looked at Jane, but it seems like we both had the same answer.

"We're in!"

We helped load some more goods onto his ship before we finally got underway. We set sail in the evening. The trip to the island would take about two days. Jane and I were up on the deck surrounded by countless boxes and sacks. We did not know what the goods were that were transported, but we didn't really care.

"It's a good thing we found a way to do it after all and didn't have to wait three weeks," Jane started the conversation.

We both leaned against a large box and just looked at the ocean. It was beautiful and peaceful.

"Hey Jane, do you sometimes feel homesick?" I asked just out of curiosity.

She looked at me a little puzzled but answered the question.

"No, I don't. I don't have anyone waiting for me at home anyway."

It was a sad answer that I didn't expect from Jane, but I didn't know her well enough to know what to expect. As she said this, she looked up at the starry sky with a somewhat bitter look on her face.

"How about you Damion? Do you feel homesick?"

"Yes, there is not a day that I do not think about my home. I just have to get back as soon as I can."

Jane continued to look up at the starry sky. The sight of her at that moment was enchanting. She looked like a star that had fallen from the sky and now wanted to go home again, but could not.

"Tell me, Damion, what is a home? Is it the place where you feel at home or is it the people who are waiting for you in that place, who are your home?"

It was a very philosophical question to which there was no real answer. After my parents were murdered, there was no place I could call home. I wandered from home to home, yet I was never able to open up. Subconsciously, I must have been afraid of losing the most important people in my life. That's why I closed myself off. I did not accept love and did not want to love. The only reason I lived was for revenge. These dark feelings were my life energy. But all that changed when I met Sarah. She accepted such a bad person like me and changed me forever.

"It is the people who are waiting for you in this place who are your home and not the place itself. As long as these people

exist, you will always have a place to call home."

That was my answer. No matter how far away we may be as long as I live, I will always return to my home. After I gave my answer, Jane seemed a little sad.

"I see, that means I really don't have a home anymore," she said quietly.

Does that mean her family is dead? She also said earlier that she had no one waiting for her at home. But before I could think about it I saw a pirate ship getting ready to attack us.
