Edward caught Violet’s hand and frowned as he turned around with a frown, but just as he was about to say something, Violet tiptoed to steal his lips.

His frown eased as he responded to Violet’s kiss in full, but his hand never let go of hers, not comfortable going too far in front of Minx. The two’s eyes were closed as they shared an awkward kiss and a new pair of trembling hands made its way to Edward’s back.

Edward opened his eyes in surprise and noticed that Minx also had come next to him at some point. Breaking free from the kiss, he walked away from the two.

“What is this?”

Minx lowered her head and didn’t answer as Violet tried to walk up to him and grab his hand, but Edward stepped back again.

“Ed, Minx loves you just as much as I do. Why won’t you give her a chance?” asked Violet with a smile on her lips.

Edward looked between the two naked girls, and he felt something was wrong. Heaving a sigh, he looked at Minx and said: “Sorry girl, but I need some time to think about my feelings as well. I like you, but...”

Minx took her wolf form and rushed out of the cave before he could finish his words, much to Edward’s bewilderment. Violet came up to him and hugged his bare body again, but Edward didn’t even seem to notice as his eyes were still locked on the cave entrance and his hand was massaging the bite mark on his arm.

“Violet, have you two planned this?” asked Edward.

Violet nodded in his arms. “She asked me how can she could be together with you, and this was the best way I could think of to convince you. It didn’t seem to work…”

Edward sighed and gently passed his hand through her silvery hair. “You shouldn’t have done that. I’m going to check on her. Wait for us to come back.”

Seeing Violet nod silently, Edward took his wolf form and rushed out. As he got a distance away from the cave, he stopped as he heard some quiet sobs from the distance.

Turning into his human form, he started walking toward the sobs, wishing to give Minx some time alone to calm down.

“Fenrir, what do you think? You should know I mostly saw her as a little sister and a companion, not like a lover.”

[You did, in the beginning, but are you sure you didn’t have any other expectations? Just as you do with Echo, Eddena and Circe.]

“What is that supposed to mean?”

[Weren’t you slightly happy when you learned about Echo’s marriage not going so well? Didn’t your feelings blossom for Eddena during the time you were together in the space prison? Didn’t you notice how you will often get absentminded when you’re around Circe?]

Edward frowned, trying to make sense of her words when a slight tremor came from the sand underneath and disrupted his thoughts.

Getting a sudden bad feeling, he quickly took his wolf form and rushed forward. As the tremors intensified, the sobbing stopped and Edward could feel the air getting colder.

‘That’s Minx’s mana? Fuck.’

His speed increased and, just as he reached the direction of the sobs, he saw a giant maw closing up around Minx in her human form. Her eyes turned towards Edward and he could see her smiling sadly at him just as the maw snapped closed around her.

Edward’s eyes turned slightly dark-red, and he rushed straight at the maw, but it quickly retreated underneath the sand.

Still able to hear it crawl underground, Edward started using a water vortex to drill down and try to follow it, but no matter how much mana he used and how fast he drilled, the sound of the worm tunnelling through the ground kept getting further away from him.

Cancelling his wolf form, his eyes turned back to normal, and he said: “Fenrir, you can find her. Please take over my body!”

[I can’t…]

“What do you mean, you can’t? You can easily eat all this sand.”

[Even if I do, I won’t reach the worm’s speed. My element is not earth…]

His eyes flashed red again as his hands trembled beneath the cold sand.

“There must be something we can do. Ask Azure, can’t she help? I can’t lose her again, Fenrir. I can’t.”

[…] Fenrir remained silent, but Edward understood that was a no.

Not willing to give up, Edward created a vortex again and started drilling down, but after a few minutes, he couldn’t hear the worm’s tunnelling anymore. Ignoring the stifling feeling in his chest, he kept pushing on until all his mana was gone and he had no choice but to stop.

“Why? Why did it have to happen like this?” asked Edward, tears already rolling down his cheeks.

“Edward? Minx?” an anxious cry came from the edge of the hole he had dug as Violet rushed down the sand slope.

Coming next to the crying Edward, she looked at him with a worried face and asked: “What happened?”

Edward looked to the side but didn’t answer immediately, and his eyes seemed to be slightly out of focus.

“Why? Why does everything happen to me? Why won’t this world let me have a moment of peace? Why does it keep trying to take away everyone I care about?”

Violet looked at Edward’s expression and brought her hand to her chest: “Was it the earthworm? Minx?”

Edward nodded silently before taking a deep breath to calm his troubled thoughts. The red in his eyes slowly went away as he turned towards the now crying Violet and said: “I’ll see what I can do, but I need you to stay safe for now. I’ll take you back to the city.”

Not waiting for an answer from her, Edward took his wolf form and motioned for her to climb onto his back. Once Violet did it, he rushed back towards Oasis while listening to any sound around him and was surprised to hear multiple different tunnelling sounds.

‘Are there more of these fuckers?’ he asked himself, but his priority right now was to make sure Violet was safe.

The journey back to Oasis seemed especially long, but when he got there, he was not greeted by the peaceful city he had left earlier tonight. There were hundreds of giant earthworms, all of them plunging from the sand from time to time, trying to swallow a human or a beast. The entire city was riddled with holes and there were people rushing everything, trying to escape the sudden calamity.

Letting Violet step down from his back, he turned back into his human form and looked at the scene of destruction in front.

“Fenrir, what is going on?” he asked, his eyes never leaving the constantly dying residents of the city. Violet was also terrified and remained motionless to the side, clinging to his arm.

[I don’t know…]

Not sure of where to go from there, he remained staring at the city. His mana was gone, and all he had left was his wolf form. Even if he wanted to help, he didn’t know how much help he could be.

“Edward, you must help sister Echo.” Said Violet with a panicked look, squeezing strongly on his arm.

Following her eyesight, he spotted Echo fighting just outside the northern city gate, trying to make her way north, probably towards him.

Edward took a step forward to help, but then he realized Violet would be left exposed. Gritting his teeth, he said: “Climb on my back and hold on tight. We’re going in.”

Violet jumped on his back when he took his wolf form, and the two rushed forward. Edward moved swiftly from side to side, avoiding most earthworm attacks before they even got out of the ground.

Focusing on all his senses, he could hear them tunnelling underground with relative ease. He could see Echo was also still coming toward him, but her golden energy was also weakening.

There was nothing he could do but keep pressing forward. He hated himself for using his entire mana pool earlier, but there was no turning back time. He could only hope Echo could hang on until he reached her. If he allowed her to climb on his back as well, he had confidence in sneaking out of the chaos.

Echo’s divine power eventually ran out, and she had to use her shields and physical strength to block attacks. The constant attacks kept pushing her around and her advance also slowed down, but she didn’t give up.

Her will was not enough and Edward watched in horror as she was too slow to avoid a worm attack. One of her arms ended up getting ripped off her body by a worm’s maw.

A growl escaped Edward’s mouth, but what happened next made him freeze on the spot. From the direction she had dodged into, another worm sprang out and he could see her body slowly getting swallowed by a giant earthworm maw.

His body shook in place, the image of Minx encountering the same fate appearing in his mind.

His eyes flashed bright red, as did his vision, but as he was about to rush into the middle of the worm attack to fight, he remembered Violet on his back and stopped himself.

‘That’s right. I still have Violet. I can’t lose her as well.’

This was the thought running through his mind as he quickly turned tail and rushed back the way he came.

“Edward, we must help her.” Said Violet, as she surprised Edward by jumping off his back. His troubled mind made him late to react, and he even reached some distance from her before stopping.

Turning around, the entire world seemed to move in slow motion as he could see Violet running towards the place Echo was just consumed by an earthworm. The small rumbling coming from under her feet made his heart cold.

Without hesitation, he used Shadow Dash and pushed her forward, away from the worm that was about to attack her from under the ground.

His hind legs were caught in the worm’s maw, making Edward wince in pain as they got ripped off his body.

Crawling on the ground, he slowly made his way towards Violet, who he had pushed out of danger for now.

Just then, a skinny man wearing a cloak appeared before the terror-stricken Violet and plunged a dagger through her heart from the back.

‘No…’

Edward watched as blood started flowing down the corner of her lips and the terror went away from her face. Her eyes were slowly losing their brilliance as she just smiled peacefully at Edward.

‘Not her too.’

‘Why won’t Fenrir help me?’

‘Why did I lose everyone?’

Just then, as colour started fading away from Edward’s world, he heard a voice speaking from deep inside his soul.

“I am still here, kid. Let me out and I’ll eat them all for you. It will be a feast none shall forget.”
