What Edward didn’t expect was that, as soon as he approached the gate, the guards didn’t say a single word and just bowed after opening it. He imagined Circe must have put them in their place and walked inside with a wide grin on his face.

Sadly the grin on his face didn’t last long as he saw Circe waiting in front of her tower with a ‘not so happy’ look on her face.

*Gulp* A nervous look appeared on Edward’s face as he approached his new master.

“You’re late.” Said Circe in a cold tone before turning around and stepping inside the tower. Edward didn’t say anything an just followed after her. As they were heading downwards on a circular flight of stairs, Circe said.

“I expect my apprentice to always be on time. This is the first and last time I will ever wait for you. Next time you are late, I’ll just close the tower and you can spend your day however you want. If it happens two more times, I will throw you out of the guild, no matter how talented you are. Understood?”

“Yes.” Replied Edward with his head lowered.

“Yes, master.. From now you will address me as master, both in private and in public.”

“Yes, master.” Edward felt a vein starting to bulge on his forehead, but he replied anyway. He was indeed a bit intimidated by this beautiful master of his and rightly so since she could probably squash him like a bug.

“Good. We’ll now head to the lowest floor of the magic tower where a permanent magical circle has been drawn. Once there, you will step inside the circle, let a drop of your blood fall onto it and try to form a contract with a water spirit. I’ll give you an incantation you must recite to the letter. It will allow the magic circle to connect to the plane the spirits live in. After that, convincing a spirit to become your contacted spirit depends on you capabilities. Understood?”

“Yes, master.”

Circe explained a few more things about spirits, but Edward already knew all this from Fenrir. A few minutes later, they both arrived at the bottom floor of the tower.

The bottom floor was only a giant empty round room with a magic circle drawn on the floor. Circe gave Edward a piece of paper and a small ceremonial knife before saying: “I can’t stay here with you since I already contracted with a spirit, so I’ll be waiting on the floor above. Make sure to read the words on that paper in a clear tone after you place your blood on the circle. Good luck and don’t forget I have great expectations from you.”

Edward nodded and Circe walked back upstairs, leaving Edward alone. He walked to the center of the circle and started looking through the piece of paper only to be interrupted by Fenrir.

[That incantation won’t do. If we want to connect to Undine’s plane we’ll have to try something else.]

“Do you know an incantation to connect to Undine?” asked Edward with excitement.

[Not really, but I have an idea on how we could attract her attention.]

“How?”

[Well, it’s still some sort of incantation, but it’s made by me to try and attract Undine’s attention. I’ll also emit some of my presence to attract her attention. Let’s hope this works.]

Fenrir then proceeded in reciting an incantation which Edward listened to carefully. Once he memorized it, he made a small cut on his finger using the ceremonial knife and repeated it.

Once he was done, the circle turned completely blue and Edward felt his consciousness slowly leaving his body. Realization just hit him, if his spirit left his body, the wolf will take over. Doing his best to hang on to his consciousness, he said through gritted teeth as he tried to resist the circle’s calling: “Fenrir, take over. Fast.”

He felt the mark on his arm starting to burn and he finally let go of his consciousness. Once he passed out, Edward felt like he passed through a thin water membrane and when he opened his eyes, he was in a misty world, his vision barely reaching a few inches from his face.

“I hope Fenrir managed to take over my body before the wolf…” muttered Edward as he started slowly moving forward. He didn’t know what Undine’s plane was like or if there was any danger, but he knew he must return to his body as soon as possible.

As he kept heading forward, blindly making his way through the dense fog, soft unknown sounds kept coming from all around him, but no matter how hard he tried to get closer to those sounds, it proved useless, as the sounds also seemed to be heading further away from him.

Eventually, after walking for what felt like an eternity, a tired but curious voice came from his front, a voice that seemed to resound into the deepest parts of Edward’s soul.

“You smell familiar, little one. A primeval smell of death and hunger…”

He couldn’t tell if the voice came from a man or a woman, but it had a peaceful effect on his soul, making him feel at ease. As the voice’s words ended, the mist all around Edward started to clear and he could see the silhouette of a giant woman right in front of him.

A gulp resounded as Edward started getting nervous and he fixed his eyes on the colossal figure that seemed to be peering in his direction through the fading mist.

“Don’t be afraid little one..”

The voice sounded once more as a small stream of water extended from the silhouette in the distance and stopped only a few millimeters away from Edward’s face, taking the form of a transparent eye.

“Indeed this smell… my soul contains memories of it… oh yes.. Fenrir…”

Edward felt a bit uncomfortable as the stream of water seemed to be carefully analyzing him, but the mention of Fenrir renewed his courage as he asked: “Are you perhaps Undine?”

“Undine… I am not” the voice responded, a deep sense of lost contained in it’s words: “For what reason did you step into my world, little one?”

“Ermm.. I wanted to form a contract with Undine to be able to use water magic.”

The voice didn’t respond this time and the small stream of water extended until it touched Edward’s forehead. Edward wanted to move away, but was surprised to notice that all the droplets of water covering his body now stopped him from moving at all.

After a few seconds, the stream of water returned towards the silhouette in the distance and the voice spoke once more: “Hmm… maybe..”

‘Maybe, what the fuck does that even mean?’ thought Edward, but before he was able to say anything else, a few tentacles made out of water covered his whole body, restraining it, and dragging him downward.

“Ahhhhh.” A loud yell escaped Edward’s mouth, but it was soon stopped as his head also got dragged underwater.

Edward panicked and closed his mouth to hold his breathing as the tentacles kept dragging him even deeper. As he felt that he couldn’t hold his breath anymore, he felt the water around him disappearing as he entered a small air bubble.

Looking up ahead, he saw a beautiful woman, whose hair and gown were made completely out of water, with fish-like fins in place of her ears and pale skin, sleeping peacefully. The voice from before sounded from his surroundings once more.

“This is Undine, out mother…”

Edward looked around, but not spotting anyone else, he asked: “Then, who are you?”

Water rose up from Undine’s body and took the form a small fish as the voice responded: “One of her children. I was the one she gave form and life right before falling into slumber. You can consider me a part of her, but I’m at the same time not her…”

Edward turned to look at the sleeping woman one more time before asking: “What happened to Undine?”

“…She got an eternal sleep curse placed over her body right after the war at the end. Before the curse took root completely, she cut away a part of her soul, powers and memories, thus gave birth to me…”

“So she’s the same as Fenrir…” mumbled Edward as he got closer to the sleeping woman.

“Is there any way to wake her up?” ha asked as he looked at her peaceful sleeping face.

“To kill the one who placed the curse in the first place. That’s why I brought you here, human, to offer you the contract you desire.”

Edward moved his eyes away from the sleeping Undine and turned towards the small fish: “I’m listening.”

“I’ll give you the ability to use the waters of the world as you so desire, and join you as your contracted spirit, but you must help me wake her up from the curse.”

“Was Vidar the one who cursed Undine?”

“Yes. That vile god’s child” responded the fish as the air bubble started trembling slightly.

Edward smiled and nodded before replying: “I agree. I was going to go after Vidar anyway to help Fenrir, but I must first tell you about the curse Fenrir is under.”

“No need.” Interrupted the fish, “I already know what happened to Fenrir after the war... Undine made those memories a part of me...”

“All right then, how do we form the contract?”

The fish then glowed and turned into a small blue bead that floated gently in front of Edward and the voice sounded in his surroundings once more: “This is my core. After you absorb it inside your soul, the contract will be complete.”

Edward grabbed the bead and looked at it carefully and asked: “So, I just need to eat this?”

“Yes.”

Edward didn’t waste any more time and threw the blue bead in his mouth. As soon as he swallowed it, he started feeling his senses extend and connect with the water all around him.

Before he could bask in the joy of this new and pleasant feeling, the world that was Undine’s plane started fading away and he returned to the too familiar space inside his mind as he felt a small gust of wind behind him.

“Oh, shit..” Were the last words that passed through his mind before he passed out completely after a sharp pain in the back of his neck.

After being completely unconscious for an unknown amount of time, Edward slowly opened his eyes only to discover he was laying down on the floor of the circular room underground.

Seeing that no one was around him, he lifted himself up from the ground and asked: “Fenrir, what happened? How long was I out?”

[You got attacked by the curse as soon as you returned and you passed out. You were only gone for an hour or so in total.]

“I see. What happened to the spirit I formed a contract with?”

[Look at the back of your left hand. That’s where Azure resides.]

“So Azure is it’s name…” Thought Edward as looked curiously at his left hand and noticed that there was another mark there in the form of a blue droplet of water. He had a book mark on his right hand, a droplet of water on his left and also a bite mark on one of his arms.

[She got attacked by the curse as well, but managed to repel the curse and took root inside a part of your soul. She already told me the whole story of what happened to Undine. While she might not be as strong, it’s the next best choice, so you did good.]

“Thanks. What about the damage the curse did to my soul?”

[It’s still manageable, but we must be careful if you plan on contracting other spirits in the future.]

“That’s fine then. More importantly, how do I use water magic?”

[You should already feel a connection to the water element, but your new master and spirit are better at explaining it than I am.]

“Can I speak to the water spirit?”

[Not really. That is only possible if you summon it in material form. I can transmit anything between the two of you.]

Edward nodded excitedly and started walking towards the exit of the room. He couldn’t wait to finally learn how to use water magic.
