Early morning of the next day, he relied on Minx’s sight to make his way back to where he left his clothes, cleaned himself using magic and made his way towards the city’s northern gate, deciding to also take Minx with him and pitch the idea of her joining them as well. That, if the others will still accept him in the party, which now looked like a slim possibility.

Since it was quite early, he had to wait for quite a while until the others arrived as well. From the direction of the gate, the three other members of the party eventually appeared. Ingvar was walking in front, wearing a high quality black set of leather armor. He had a pair of twin-blades tied at his waist, but his hair was no longer falling freely and was tied in a bun at the back, probably not to bother him in combat. Edward, as much as he hated the guy’s guts, he had the admit that he looked quite heroic in that outfit.

To Ingvar’s right sister walked his sister, now wearing a black outfit similar to the one Ingvar wore, but in contrast to her completely black leather armor, there was a pure while longbow strapped to her back, in an obvious display of her main class. The only thing Edward didn’t understand was why there was no quiver strapped to her back as well, but since he hasn’t done anything else besides butting heads with the girl, he decided to wait and see than to ask.

The last person in the group was a tall and sturdy looking woman who, to Edward’s amazement, wore two long shields, sharpened at the sides, on the back of both of her arms. Her twin black haired ponytails falling over both of her shoulders towards the front of her body paired with her slightly sturdy physique made for quite a peculiar image. She also wore the same type of leather armor as the other two, only having a few more white metal plates sown over it, threading a thin line between iron and leather armor.

The group of three was also surprised when they saw Edward riding on top of a human sized wolf, Ingvar and his sister more than the other woman since it was her first time meeting him, but they didn’t seem scared or apprehensive as the last party and walked up to him. Ingvar even ignored the wolf completely as he asked: “Edward, did you register for a subclass yesterday?”

Edward’s expression became a bit awkward as he said: “About that… stuff happened...”

Seeing everyone was looking at him with a curious look, Edward sighed and said: “I wanted to register for three subclasses in total since I figured 50 more life force required per level was not that big of a deal, but then something unexpected happened…. I actually ended up activating my unique class as well and the life force requirement is now quite high..”

To Edward’s surprise, Ingvar’s sister burst into laughter while Ingvar and the other woman only showed a mild expression of surprise, not at all the reaction he was expecting.

“What are you laughing about?” asked Edward, feeling a bit grumpy. ‘I’m having a crisis and this woman is just laughing like an idiot…’

Ingvar’s sister continued laughing to her heart content as manifested her status board and showed it to Edward. Ingvar looked like he wanted to stop her but was too slow and he just ended up sighing in the end.

<Name: Kara Treva>

Edward kept staring at her status board with only a thought running through his mind: ‘She’s just as abnormal as I am, maybe even more so...’

As he was wondering what a mixed class was, Kara finally stopped laughing and cleared her throat before saying: “Don’t you think that now, since I showed you my status board, the polite thing would be to show me yours as well?”

Edward sighed and, seeing the curiosity in her eyes, showed his status to Kara. She looked at it for a few moment with a smile before lifting an eyebrow in surprise and saying: “Your unique class is actually stronger than mine, too bad it’s only a subclass.”

“What does that mean?” asked Edward, not really understanding what she meant.

“If you would have had it as main class, it would have probably been an advantage from the start, but as a subclass, it will always lag behind one proficiency level. This means that it can only show it’s strength once you promote your main class to intermediate level. That is if you can’t mix it, but the chances of that happening before reaching intermediate water mage are also quite low…”

“Mix it? What is that?”

“Did you crawl out of the woods or something? How can you now know what mixing classes means?”

Edward abstained from telling her that in a way, he kind of did, and waited for her to continue.

“Mixing classes means combining two classes, two subclasses or a class and a subclass into a stronger one, but each class has a different mixing requirement. Take for example nature mage class, mine is inborn, which means I was born in this class, but one can still obtain it after reaching at least intermediate mage in both the water and earth mage classes.”

“I see…” muttered Edward, wondering if his shape-shifter class will actually mix with any other class and end up evolving as well.

Ingvar cleared his throat from the side to attract the two’s attention and said: “The fact that you both have unique classes is great and all, but are you forgetting it will be a pain to level up since both of you need more than 800 kills for a single level?”

Edward scratched his head and got ready to be kicked out when Kara said: “What’s the big deal? I underestimated the brat, but now that he has an unique class I also want him in our party. Not even talking about the fact that I never heard of this shape-shifter class, the simple fact that it takes 200 life force to level up means that the class is quite strong.”

Ingvar sighed and nodded in acceptance before turning to look at Minx and asking: “And what’s with the moon walking wolf?”

Edward turned to look at Minx as well, who was just licking her fur with a bored look, and said: “She’s Minx, my companion. She’s not that strong but she saved my life a couple of times and figured it wouldn’t hurt bringing her with us.”

Ingvar pondered for a moment while staring at Minx before turning back towards Edward: “Are you sure the wolf won’t cause any trouble? Moon walking wolves are not an easy beast to tame.”

Edward nodded in reply and Ingvar turned to look at his sister and the other woman. Kara shrugged, not really seeming to care that much, but the other woman actually shook her head and said: “I don’t really think the wolf should come with us.”

Ingvar took the chance as the woman spoke to introduce her to Edward as well: “Edward, this is Echo. She’s our childhood friend and a really skilled shield maiden.”

Edward bowed towards Echo and she did the same before he asked: “Nice meeting you Echo. Could you tell me why I shouldn’t bring Minx? I can guarantee that she won’t behave aggressively towards any of us, but even if you are worried about that, you should be able to easily defend against her.”

Echo nodded, not minding the trace of displeasure in Edward’s tone and said: “She’s too weak and won’t be able to do anything for the party from the third floor onwards. You know, anything that is not an advantage is a burden and we already have to keep an eye on you.”

‘Well, she’s just as bitchy as the other one...’ thought Edward but he still nodded with a sigh: “All right, but she can at least take us there. I think it will be faster riding her anyway.”

This time no one had any problem and they mounted Minx before riding towards the same dungeon. As they were riding on the wolf’s back, Ingvar noticed the sword Edward strapped to Minx’s back and asked: “What’s with this sword? Do you want to learn sword-fighting as well?”

Edward also looked to the sword and said: “Not really, the sword belonged to one of my ex party members. He died in the dungeon and I somehow kept the sword…”

Ingvar just nodded and didn’t say anything else, choosing not to ask more about it since Edward seemed quite down when he spoke about his former party.

Once they reached the entrance to the White Scale Burrows, seeing the familiar door crowded with chatting adventurers, Edward asked Minx to stop a decent distance away and everyone jumped down from her back.

Fixing his eyes on the door to the dungeon, Edward’s feeling were not the same as the last time he was here. There was a trace of apprehension mixed with pity in his heart.

“Let’s hope this won’t be a repeat of the last time….” Murmured Edward before patting Minx and saying to her: “Go. Hide nearby and wait for…”

Before Edward could finish his words, he was interrupted by Ingvar: “That’s not a good idea. There are a lot of adventurers passing by here and she might get hunted by them. If you want her to be safe, you should send her back to the woods near the city.”

Edward just realized that he was right and had no choice but to send her to wait for them by the city. Minx seemed reluctant to leave but eventually did as she was told and left in the direction they came from.

Seeing Minx disappearing into the dense forest nearby, Edward let out a sigh and turned towards the rest before nodding. “Thank you for the reminder, Ingvar.”

“No problem. I still owe the wolf one for the ride so I’m not going to let it die just like that. Let’s go in.” Said Ingvar, turning around and walking towards the entrance. Kara walked up to him with Echo and Edward following just a step behind.

Low whispers started coming from all the adventurers around them, apparently recognizing Ingvar and Kara, but the party just ignored them as they walked forward and were soon in front of the entrance guards. After receiving the same instructions as last time, the guards moved to the side to let them enter, even bowing slightly towards Ingvar and Kara.

Edward stopped for a moment right in front of the door and looked forward at the brightly lit white passage with a heavy heart. There was a trace of hesitation in his eyes. The other’s walked quite a few feet inside before they realized that Edward was no longer following after them and has stopped at the entrance.

“Anything wrong?” asked Ingvar as he turned around and looked at Edward who appeared to be hesitating in front of the door.

Hearing Ingvar speak to him, Edward sighed and started walking again, quickening his steps so that he would catch up to the others. Nothing was truly wrong, but being back here reminded him of the moment he entered with his last party.

‘Let’s hope this doesn’t end in a repeat of the last time…’
