Edward didn’t know what Kara had in mind, but if he hoped to not get kicked out of the party, he had to follow after her. The two, to Edward’s surprise, actually passed the edge of the safe zone and walked a bit further away until Kara finally turned and looked at Edward.
“So, that curse, explain to me how it works.”
Edward nodded with a serious expression and started saying: “My body turns into a wolf plagued with an insatiable hunger whenever I fall asleep or lose consciousness and will turn back once I rested enough or recover from the injuries I have. At least that’s what I figured up to now.”
“Any other way you can turn other than that?” asked Kara after nodding slightly.
Edward hesitated once he heard her question, the fact that Fenrir could also take control of his body popping in his mind, but he still shook his head.
Kara noticed the hesitation followed by his denial and started walking towards the safe zone as she said: “If you keep lying to me, I can’t trust fighting by your side. You can head to the first floor on your own. You’re out.”
Her decisiveness caught Edward by surprise and he moved in front of her as he said: “Please wait. It’s not really a lie. The wolf can only take control of my body while I sleep or am unconscious. It’s just that...” Edward stopped here, letting his words trail out, not really sure what to tell her.
“Just that what? Are you going to tell me the truth or not?” asked Kara with an impatient expression on her face, obviously planning to leave if she didn’t like the words coming out of Edward’s mouth next.
Edward looked into her eyes and, seeing the determination inside them, let out a sigh as he showed her the bite mark on her hand: “This is the mark of the curse. There’s a long story, but there is another way to turn. I can surrender control voluntary to the curse and if I do that, the wolf will actually listen to me and do as I say, but I will also injure my soul for it. It’s not easy to explain, but I can promise you I will not use this method lightly and there is no other way to turn other that what I mentioned…”
Kara looked at the bite mark on his arm and said: “Your promises don’t mean that much to me. Tell me all about the wolf’s abilities, what else can it do besides using magic?”
“Using magic?” asked Edward, confused by what she meant.
Kara raised and eyebrow and said: “You’re not aware of what happens when you are that wolf thing?”
Edward shook his head and said: “It’s a bit foggy, but as far as I’m aware, the wolf is not able to use magic.”
“Oh? And did the lizard’s heads got cut on their own?”
“Oh, that. That was not the wolf but me. I overdrafted my stamina to use my Wolf Shift skill. I only half transformed and was able to increase my agility just enough to reach the lizards in time and I used magic in that half transformed form. Because I overdrafted my stamina, I ended up passing out right after and just then did the wolf come out.”
“Oh wait, are you saying that you were still in control when you jumped off the earth pillar?” asked Kara, looking slightly confused.
Edward nodded and said: “Yes, that was me. I wanted to help Echo and ended up overdrafting my stamina on instinct and getting into a semi Wolf Shift state.”
Kara let out a sigh and said: “So that’s what happened. Any other abilities I should know about?”
Edward pondered for a moment before saying: “All I know is his increased strength and dexterity, his high regenerative capabilities and his constant need to eat. Also, if the wolf gets to devour enough, it will heal me from almost any injury while also recovering my mana. That’s all I know of it. I promise.”
Kara looked at Edward’s face in silence for a moment before eventually nodding and saying: “I’ll allow you to remain in the party, but how you deal with your sleeping habits it’s on you.”
After saying her piece she started walking back towards the safe zone. Edward looked at her back and let out a sigh of relief while muttering: “At least they didn’t kick me out…”
Since her back was turned towards him, Edward didn’t notice the wide smile that appeared on her lips as she was walking away towards the safe zone.
[Edward, I think you should try not to fall asleep. There are no real targets here that the wolf can take on and, once it’s hunger grows too strong, he won’t be able to control it and end up attacking anything in sight.]
“Are you saying that he will attack the lizards even if he can’t win?” asked Edward, obviously concerned the wolf will just kill him.
[Yes. Last time it couldn’t control it’s hunger it started biting itself… he might even go for the safe zone.]
Edward frowned and sat down to try and think about a solution, but even after a few minutes, he couldn’t come up with any idea. He could probably avoid sleeping for today, but he would definitely have to tomorrow.
“Fenrir, can you take control back from the wolf?”
[I could, but..]
“I know, but we don’t have any other choice. We can use it as a test for now. We let the wolf out and see how he behaves. If he tries to kill himself by attacking a group of lizards or the safe zone, just take control over it’s body and run away.”
[All right.]
Edward nodded and, with a heavy sigh, he sat down on the ground and closed his eyes to sleep, hoping for the best.
Unknown to Edward, he was not alone there. In the distance, hidden behind one of the dungeon’s pillars, Echo with her eyes shinning a bright golden light was watching him in secret.
“Who is he speaking to?” muttered Echo, noticing that Edward appeared to be speaking to someone, but at the same time being too far to really understand what he was saying.
After Kara made her way back inside the safe zone and explained the situation, Echo felt like she owed Edward one and decided to come and keep an eye on him. As she continued observing, she noticed Edward sitting down on the dungeon floor, closing his eyes.

She took a deep breath and observed as his body slowly transformed. After turning into the pure black wolf, it fixed it’s eyes in Echo’s and one other direction before letting out a small growl and heading further in the dungeon.
“Did he just spot me?” muttered Echo as she came out of her hiding spot and started running after the wolf. The wolf just moved from place to place, apparently getting more restless every time it changed it’s direction. Infusing divine energy into her eyes, Echo was able to follow after him with ease. The fact that he didn’t seem willing to head deeper inside the dungeon and they didn’t encountered any group of lizards, made her release a sigh of relief as she finally decided to head back and recover her strength as well. She used a whole lot of diving energy and stamina during the day, only recovering a part of it.
Giving the wolf one more look, she turned around and started heading back towards the safe zone. “That’s all I can do. Let’s hope that he will not do anything stupid…”
As she was about five or so minutes from reaching the safe zone, a soft sound of running followed by a sense of danger surprised Echo and she quickly used her Fortress skill in an instant.
*Thud!* a crushing sound was heard soon after and she turned around to see the wolf she was stalking trying to penetrate her shield using it’s teeth.
Echo didn’t panic, being sure he wouldn’t be able to destroy it too soon and continued walking back towards the safe zone, but to her surprise, not even a few seconds after, she noticed the divine energy that was making the shield was slowly being devoured by the wolf and her shield was becoming thinner and thinner.
“What the hell is this?” asked Echo out loud as she brought her two arm-shields in front of her body and got ready for the shield to break.
*Crack**Crack**Poc* it didn’t take long and the shield finally cracked, falling to the ground into pieces like it was made out of glass. The wolf, having destroyed the shield, jumped back slightly and growled menacingly at Echo.
Echo looked back at the growling wolf and said: “You think you can take me on, little puppy? While I might be low on stamina and energy, I still can wipe the floor with you.”
The wolf growled once more at her before leaping straight towards her with his mouth wide open. Since there were mostly groups of level four lizards all over this floor, his best choice to attack turned out to be Echo who followed after him alone.
Echo snorted and hit his opened jaw with her shield, producing another dull sound as the wolf was pushed back. The wolf seemed to have completely lost if because it ended up charging at her once more.
Since Echo was reluctant to use the little stamina and diving energy she had left while also not wishing to actually injure Edward, simply used her two shields to repel any attack the wolf threw at her.
The two of the actually were stuck in a deadlock with the wolf recklessly attack while Echo was pushing him back using her shields every time, a deadlock that continued for more than half an hour when Echo muttered: “Does this thing not feel any pain? I must have hit it in the head at least a thousand times. How is it still getting up?”
The wolf had blood flowing out of it’s head and looked to be in a quite a bad shape, but his attacks were still coming, with just as much ferocity as before. Being quite pissed by the relentless wolf, with her arms starting to get sore, Echo finally couldn’t take it anymore and, during one of his usual straight forward attacks, she opted against blocking it again and moved to the side. As the wolf missed his attack and was about to pass by her, she grabbed it by it’s tick neck and used all her force to try to rend it unconscious.
Echo easily overpowered it and managed to keep the wolf in her hold, but even after more than an entire minute, the wolf didn’t show any sign of falling unconscious, even more, it seemed to struggle more and more desperately.
“This…, this…” muttered Echo in exasperation before using her free hand to summon her status tablet. With the tablet in her hand, she created a hole in the floor just under her feet and jumped up while holding the wolf to avoid falling through the hole herself.
Landing nearby, he waited for a bit and, just as the hole was about to close, she shoved the lower half of the wolf’s body inside, getting it stuck in the regenerating floor.
*Crack**Crack*
The sound of crackling bones followed by a pained howl escaping the wolf’s mouth and Echo stared carefully at the scene in front of her, keeping the status tablet at the ready.
The idea to lock the wolf inside the floor came to her in the moment and she had no idea if the floor will end up crushing the wolf’s body or not.
After five to six minutes of continuous howling accompanied by cracking noises, silence finally returned to that part of the dungeon. The regeneration of the floor appeared to have stopped, causing to Echo let out a sigh of relief.
“What a pain in the ass you turned out to be.” Said Echo to the wolf who was still struggling fruitlessly to free itself from the floor. Seeing that, while the wolf was agitated and kept struggling, it was generally fine, Echo looked around using her divine energy imbued eyes and muttered to herself: “Well, I did manage to subdue him, but if any lizards comes here it would be helpless to defend itself…”
Being caught in a whole new dilemma, Echo eventually laid down a couple of meters away from the wolf and muttered as she closed her eyes: “After this night, you are the one owing me kid.”
Edward was inside his mind, listening to Fenrir narrate everything that was happening outside.
“This girl is quite smart, not even I thought about that.” Said Fenrir, causing Edward to ask: “What happened?”
“She used the tablet to get the wolf stuck inside the floor. If he doesn’t get crushed to death, this might work in keeping it under control.”
Edward let out a sight of relief hearing that everything appeared to be quite alright and waited for Fenrir to tell him what happened next. As the floor stopped regenerating and the wolf stopped howling in pain, Fenrir said: “It’s fine now. Congratulation Edward, you didn’t get squashed to death by the dungeon.”
“Hahah, very funny,” exclaimed Edward before continued: “What next? Did she leave for the safe zone?”
“No, she appears to have decided to sleep nearby and keep watch over your body throughout the night.”
Edward nodded and said proudly, finally relieved this problem was over: “It looks like I managed to conquer this fair maiden’s heart completely.”
Fenrir ignored his comment and Edward spent the whole night asking if everything was alright every fine minutes, driving Fenrir almost crazy.
“I wonder who’s the fair maiden here and who did the conquering…” muttered Fenrir under her breath as she answered Edward’s question if ‘Echo was all right.’, once again.
