‘Why is it so dark?’
‘I’m scared.’
‘Help.’
‘Edward…’
“Did you expect stealing from me will have no consequences?”
‘What? Who is it?’
“Open your eyes little pup. Open your eyes and see.”
Minx already tried opening her eyes many times, but she couldn’t. The moment she heard the last words, her eyes snapped open on their own. In front of her stood an unknown woman, levitating slowly just a few inches above the ground. She looked human and at the same time, not. If one were to see just the right side of her body, he might take her as the most beautiful woman in the whole world, but if one were to only see the left, they would think they have met death itself.
Minx stared at the woman in front of her for a good moment and asked: “Who are you?”
The woman didn’t answer Minx’s question. She just kept staring at the wolf in front of her, a curious look in her eyes. The wolf didn’t have the usual horror in it’s eyes, the horror she got used to see whenever a mortal will set his eyes on her.
Seeing the woman wasn’t planning on answering her question, Minx tried to look around to find out where she was, but all she could see everywhere was a thick black mist. She didn’t know where she was and no matter where she turned her eyes, there was no trace of Edward.
She was scared, more scared than she’s ever been. She didn’t know what happened, what went wrong, how she got here... All she remembered was she swallowing the dark core and then waking up in this dark place.
“Where is Edward?” asked Minx once more, this time her tone becoming a little colder than before. She would worry about herself after she made sure Edward was alright.
“Is Edward the name of that brat that was with you?” asked the woman, unperturbed about Minx’s threatening tone.
Seeing Minx nod, she said: “He ran away carrying your dead body.
To the woman’s surprise, Minx didn’t seem too bothered by her words, instead looking relieved as she whispered softly: “As long as you’re fine…”
“Are you not bothered to find out that you are dead?” asked the woman.
“Minx is happy Edward is still alive, even if Minx wants to be there with him.” Said Minx as she closed her eyes once again with the corners of her lips forming a sad smile.
The woman looked at the young lady smiling peacefully in front of her with a perplexed look in her eyes.
“Father, was that how you felt as well?” asked the woman with a sigh, the right side of her face being covered by a sad expression while a profound anger contorted her left side.
“At least you still have sister Fenrir to watch over you.”
The woman started slowly fading away, but stopped herself when she heard Minx’s words.
“What did you just say?” she asked, but Minx apparently didn’t hear her at all, the same tranquil expression on her face.
The woman, noticing this, impatiently walked up to Minx and placed one hand on her chest. A round crown, half of it being made out of flowers while the other half being made out of bones appeared right under her palm, imprinting itself onto Minx’s chest.
As Minx’s eyes snapped open again, she didn’t even get to say a single word before the woman asked again: “What did you just say?”
Minx looked confused for a moment, but eventually repeating her last words. Hearing Minx’s words once more, a smile appeared on the woman entire face.
“You can go back little pup, Hel has no place for you anymore.” Two distinct voices, one warm as a sunny summer day and the other as cold as the darkest winter night, entered Minx’s ears and she felt her consciousness slowly fading away.
“I knew you would one day return…” mumbled the woman as she also slowly disappeared.
Back in the woods just outside Spirit Reach dungeon, Edward was hugging Minx’s body while kneeling pitifully on the ground. There were no loud wails escaping his mouth, only an unending stream of tears falling silently down his cheeks.
He was being consumed by his grief and guilt. He knew there was no one else to blame but himself. He was the one who took Minx with him on this quest. He was the one who asked Minx to grab that core. He was… he was the reason she was now laying dead in his arms.
Slowly, like it was joining him in his grief, a cold wind started blowing all around, but Edward paid it no mind as he continued crying with his eyes closed and mouth stuffed into Minx’s still soft fur.
[Something’s not right.] said Fenrir, making Edward finally open his eyes and look up.
He noticed a phenomenon he has seen before, just a few hours ago. The air in front of him was distorting slowly.
“It’s that thing again.” Said Edward as he gently laid Minx’s body to the side and stood up: “it appears I might join you soon, Minx.”
A serious look in his eyes, Edward waited patiently for the opening of the rift. No matter what came out of it, he would fight it. And if he were to die, that wouldn’t be so bad either. He didn’t know if he would be able to run away, but he didn’t want to now that he found the perfect place to vent his feelings.
These thoughts in mind, his mana started to slowly revolve around his body as water bullets kept forming all around him, ready to be launched at a moment’s notice.
The rift finally opened and, seeing the same red eye from before, Edward launched his attack towards it immediately. It passed through the rift and appeared to have hit the eye, but nothing else seemed to happen after that. The attack seemed to resemble a drop of water dropped in the ocean. Undaunted, Edward launched another series of attacks, but the same thing as last time happened again.
“Child of Midgard, I mean no harm.” A voice eventually drifted out of the rift and entered Edward’s ears.
Hearing the familiar term, Edward finally stopped and looked at the red eye in front of him carefully. He didn’t know what or who it was, so he asked Fenrir: “Fenrir, is this Vidar?”
[No…]

As Fenrir’s words sounded, the eye moved it’s sight towards Edward’s arm.
“Sister…” said the same voice from before, sounding a lot more gentler this time.
Edward lifted an eyebrow and looked questionably at his arm.
[You are not Hel.] said Fenrir, ignoring Edward’s questioning look.
“Indeed… I am not. I’ve come to return something.” the voice behind the rift didn't seem offended by Fenrir's words, appearing happy instead. As the voice’s words ended, a small cluster of black and blue light drifted out of the rift and headed for Minx’s body.
Edward wanted to stop it on instinct, but Fenrir said: [It’s her soul. Let it return to her body.]
“Is she alive?” asked Edward in a cracked voice, his entire body starting to shake.
“She is.. And at the same time not. She’ll have…” Replied the voice instead of Fenrir, but her words were interrupted by the loud sound of clouds rumbling up above.
Looking up, Edward noticed that the previous starry sky was now covered by a thick foliage of black clouds.
“...To survive the world’s punishment if she wants to truly live once more. If she fails, her soul would get shattered forever.”
[A world tribulation.] murmured Fenrir from the mark. There was a trace of awe as well as happiness in her voice.
“What is that Fenrir?” asked Edward, not understanding what the two were talking about.
[When the laws governing a world are defied, the world itself will try to punish the one who does that and rectify the problem. This will manifest into a world tribulation.]
Edward turned to look at Minx’s body with mixed feelings in his eyes.
“As much as I want her back, her soul getting shattered is too…”
*Boom* the tribulation didn’t give them any time as a thick bold of lightning stroke the opened rift. The power behind the lightning destroyed the rift completely and even threw Edward backwards a few feet away.
“Goodbye.” A single word drifted over from the crumbling rift before it was completely gone.
Sitting up, Edward looked at the massive that took the rift’s spot and mumbled: “Minx has to survive this? It’s impossible…”
[She will indeed die if she gets hit by it… go to sleep, Edward.]
“Huh?” asked Edward, not understanding what she meant.
[Let the wolf out. Quickly, before the next one strikes.]
Finally understanding, Edward didn’t waste a single moment and did something he has not done in a long time. Punching himself on the back of his head, he knocked himself out in an instant.
As the wolf took over, it lifted it’s head up and looked at the clouds above with saliva flowing through it’s sharp teeth. once the lightning took form and started to come down in the direction of Minx’s body, the wolf jumped right above it and opened it’s maw.
*Boom*
The sound of thunder, even louder than before, resounded in the area, but the wolf just stood above Minx, his body anchored to the ground and maw opened wide. Once the lightning strike was over, the wolf finally closed it’s maw and continued looking at the clouds with a greedy look, like just a single strike seemingly too little for him.
The sudden storm also grabbed the attention of the adventurers camping at the dungeon entrance. Seeing two lightning strikes hitting so close nearby and almost in the same spot, they started making their way towards that spot to see what was going on.
When about twenty or so parties arrived in eyesight of the place, they all spotted a black wolf sitting proudly over another body they couldn’t see properly because the moonlight was being covered by the clouds. They wanted to get closer and see what it was all about, but the rumbling of the clouds above made them quite reluctant to do so. Even if their levels were all above 30, they knew they were probably still dead if they got hit by that lightning.
They waited in the distance and looked at how the wolf devoured two more lightning strikes before the clouds above finally started dissipating. As the clouds started receding, all the adventurers looked up and heaved a sigh of relief. With the disappearance of the clouds, making room for the moonlight behind to shine on the earth once more, they noticed that the wolf was no longer sitting proudly like before and was laying down next to a naked human man.
Edward, finally back in his own body again, slowly stood up and looked at Minx’s body next to him. Seeing she appeared unharmed, he checked to see if she had any pulse and let out a sigh of relief when he noticed she did indeed have one.
As he was checking on her some more, the sound of footsteps from the north made him stop and turn his head. He spotted two adventurer parties coming towards him and even a few dozen more observing from the distance.
“Damn it, the lightning must have brought them here.”
He was worried how much they have seen, but after thinking it over for a moment, he realized it didn’t matter. If they really saw the wolf devouring the lightning, he could just explain it as his shape-shifting skill.
As the two parties got closer, a sturdy middle aged man fixed his eyes on the unconscious Minx and asked: “Is the beast alright?”
Edward didn’t know why the man asked about Minx, but seeing she appeared to just be peacefully sleeping, he smiled and nodded: “She’s alright. Just sleeping.”
The man nodded and said: “What species is she? I’ve never seen a wolf that can devour lightning in such manner.”
Edward understood that they must have mistaken Minx as the one who devoured the lightning instead of him. He found this to be working even better for him and he patted Minx’s head gently as he said: “I don’t know her species, all I know is that she is and always will be my companion.”
