Eddena immediately started rushing back as soon as she heard the dragon’s incantation. She knew that incantations were only used when dealing when appealing to beings from the spirit worlds or one of the spirit worlds itself.

Shade also started rushing backward, but, even with their high levels, they were not fast enough. A spherical cage made out of pure flame appeared out of thin air and trapped the two of them inside.

With blood gushing out of it’s entire body, the dragon started standing for the first time since they began fighting. The moment it was up on all fours, Eddena’s eyes fell on the giant black egg that was pulsating with purple light under her belly.

She finally understood why Shade was so eager to make that deal, that contract. He must have known in advance that the dragon was carrying an egg with it as it fell onto the swamp. A dragon egg was a lot more precious than the body and core of a dragon, especially so for Oasis, a city in which beast taming was one of the main professions.

She fixed her eyes on Shade on the other side of the battlefield and clenched her fists tightly. If looks could kill, Shade would have died a thousand times over, but she knew she could not go against the binding contract she has signed.

The dragon ignored the two humans and fixed her eyes on the egg she was protecting up to now. The fury contained in it’s eyes just before melted instantly and it was replaced by pure love tinged with a trace of unwillingness.

Without moving her eyes from the egg, her voice drifted through the air once more.

“Ember, old friend, it’s been a long journey…”

“Indeed it has, mistress. What is your command?” the mana all around the black dragon took the the form of another dragon, this one being bright red and made completely out of fire. The flames that formed the new dragon’s eyes burning brightly as they fixed on the two humans inside it’s domain.

The black dragon closed it’s giant eyes for a moment before laying down on her egg once more. Once the egg was safe under her body, she opened her eyes, unconstrained fury burning deeply inside them.

“Heed my final order, Ember. I don’t care if you have to use my very life as fuel. I want you to burn everything. Burn them both. Burn them until not even their soul is left...”

“Mistress, your body. You won’t…” interrupted Ember with worry, but the dragon’s resolute expression didn’t falter for even a moment.

“I don’t care. I order you on the pact we formed all those years ago, do it, burn them both alive.” said the black dragon once again as it closed it’s eyes and moved it’s head under the protection of it’s own wing.

Seeing the madness in the dragon’s eyes just before they closed, both Shade and Eddena immediately knew she planned on killing them both no matter the consequences.

“As you command.” Replied Ember, the fire forming it’s body starting to slowly extend outwards.

Eddena and Shade knew that, if they couldn’t get out of the fire cage soon, they would both die here. Joining together, they started focusing their strongest attacks in one place, but even as they managed to make a small opening in the fire barrier, it immediately regenerated, rendering their attacks useless.

“Damn it. Do I really have to use it?” exclaimed Eddena as an aged scroll appeared in the palm of her hand.

Shade, seeing the scroll that Eddena was carrying immediately moved to grab it from her. Expecting such a reaction, Eddena dashed backwards while breaking the scroll in two at the same time.

As soon as the scroll was broken, Eddena’s body started turning transparent and it looked like she would fade into the background at any moment.

Shade watched her fade away but didn’t look flustered at all. Turning towards the expanding red dragon, he muttered: “Such a shame. I ended up losing a dragon egg, a high spirit and a even one life... sigh”

As his words ended, his body was engulfed by a wave of fire and burned to ashes in a matter of seconds.

The space inside the barrier kept burning for over half an hour continuously. Once the fire died down and the barrier disappeared, the only things left inside were a small mountain made completely out of ash and a small burning red flame.

The flame floated gently above the mountain of ash and took the form of the same red dragon from before, although a lot smaller.

“I’m sorry mistress, I let one of them escape…” he knew that if he has not returned to the spirit world, his mistress was not dead yet, but with all the life force he took from her to unleash the last attack, she didn’t have that much time left to live.

No answer came, not that he expected one. He was about cancel his summoning and return inside her soul to spend the remaining time with her when he felt a trace of familiar power coming from the north.

Floating upwards, he looked towards the north and saw, not that far away from him, a wolf made completely out of water rushing recklessly through the tide of beasts.

“Undine... the mother tree has not forsaken us…” Muttered the little dragon as he started floating towards the wolf, but before he could reach it, the spirit presence disappeared and two wolves came tumbling out of the sea of beasts.

Looking at the two wolves underneath, a trace of hesitation flashed through the little dragon’s eyes. He looked at the blue wolf as it struggled pointlessly to move and then back at his mistress. Finally, his eyes fell on the black wolf and the hesitation from before turned into resolution.

Spitting out a small droplet of blood, the red dragon’s body turned slightly incorporeal and it floated towards the black wolf.

—————

Inside Edward’s mind, Azure was about to respond when she felt something and said: “It’s here…”

Following her words, a small dragon appeared out of nowhere in front of Edward’s eyes. The small dragon ignored both Edward and Fenrir, immediately rushing in front of Azure’s body and falling on all fours, heading touching the ground in reverence.

“Maiden of the Mist, Lady Undine, I beseech you, please use your power to save my mistress.”

Edward was stunned at the unexpected turn of events but continued watching in silence, having no clue what was happening inside his own soul.

A soft sigh escaped Azure’s mouth as she said: “Raise, Ember. As much as I want to, I can’t help you since I’m not Undine…”

The dragon looked up at the small fish floating above him and said: “Surely you jest, Lady Undine. I would recognize you anywhere. Please, I beg you, save mistress Flastrdra.”

“Sigh… I understand what you feel, but I’m really not Undine. I’m merely a fragment of her soul, powers and memories…”

“How can…” muttered Ember as the wings on his back fell lifelessly to the ground. When he felt Undine’s presence nearby, hope was returned to him, but now all that hope was crushed completely.

He broke his contract with Flastrdra to enter another person’s soul and beg Undine for help, but he has failed and now he could not even be together with his mistress in her last moments anymore.

“Azure, who’s this?” asked Edward after seeing the two have stopped speaking. Azure turned towards Edward and said: “This is Ember, a high spirit of fire and one of Salamander’s children. He is the one responsible for all the fire mana in the marsh.”

Edward nodded and walked up to the small dragon: “You said something about helping your mistress. Do you mind telling us what all of it is about?”

Ember raised his eyes and looked at the human in front of him. His mind going back to the two humans that were responsible for what happened to his mistress, a trace of disgust welled up inside him as he said: “Another human? Are you together with the ones that attacked my mistress?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking…” replied Edward, not expecting to suddenly be blamed for something he didn’t do, but as he was speaking, he remembered Eddena’s mission and stopped talking.

“So you are with them…” said Ember as his body started burning brighter, but before he could make a move a formidable presence washed over him and his entire body was pushed flat onto the ground.

“Who do you think you are? Entering the soul of my host uninvited and even daring to threaten him.” Said Fenrir in a grim voice, the entire space all around fluctuating slightly.

“It’s alright, Fenrir. Probably this mistress he keeps talking about was Eddena’s target in the swamp.” Said Edward towards Fenrir before turning back towards the small dragon: “Azure already said that she can’t help and, while not directly involved, I am indeed friends with one of the humans that attacked you, but as far as I know, my friend came here to try and talk things with you and not fight unless necessary. Can you please explain what happened?”

Hearing the name Fenrir, Ember froze on the spot with an expression of abject terror on his face and heard none of Edward’s following words. He only came into being after Ragnarök took place, but he has heard the story of the all-devouring wolf.

Ember wanted to turn tail and flee outside Edward’s soul as fast as possible but no matter how hard he tried, he was to scared to even move. If a spirit’s host or the spirit itself gets killed in the material world it won’t really die and just return to the spirit world, but getting devoured by Fenrir meant he would be completely erased from existence and he knew that very well.

Azure, seeing that Ember was too terrified to even speak in front of Fenrir anymore, sighed and said: “It’s fine Ember, sister Fenrir doesn’t mean any harm. You can go now and I’m sorry I couldn’t help..”

Ember felt like he has just receive a royal pardon and started floating upwards to leave Edward’s soul only to stop once again as he reached the border. Turning towards the three once more, he appeared to have remembered something and said: “My mistress sacrificed most of her life force to protect her child. She won’t probably not last until tomorrow, but if you would allow me, I have a small request to make.”

Edward got curious what he meant so he nodded towards the fire spirit to continue speaking.

“Once your wounds are healed and can move once again, please protect the egg my mistress has left behind. If you agree to fulfill my selfish request, no matter what happens, please make sure no one from the dragon kingdom or any of the human cities finds out it survived.”

His words ending, the spirit turned around once more and finally exited Edward’s soul. He didn’t know if he could fully trust them, but he knew that a spirit having inherited Undine’s memories would not have chosen an unworthy host to form a contract with.

“Egg? Dragon kingdom?” asked Edward, turning towards Azure with a questioning look.

“It appears this mistress he was talking about was no mere human but a dragon..” Replied Azure with a pensive look, the news coming up as a surprise for her as well.

“I had no idea there were dragons in this world….” Replied Edward, the thought of wanting to meet a real dragon passing briefly through his mind.

“What are you going to do, Edward?” asked Fenrir, the situation already exceeding everyone’s expectations.

“What can I even do? No even the wolf can move so there’s not much I can even do. We’ll just have to wait for me to recover and hope no one comes looking for trouble in the meantime. About that, Fenrir, do you know how long it will that take for my body to recover?”

“For the wolf to heal your body from this condition will probably take a full week to say the least, but that’s only because it can’t actually move at the moment. If it could move and find anything to feed upon, you could be healed as fast as a couple of short hours.”

Since everything he could do was to wait for the best, Edward sat down and started speaking with Azure about her summoning spell.

—————

Outside in the real world, Minx observed a small transparent dragon floating out of Edward’s body. Mustering the little mana she has recovered, her voice drifted into the air: “Please, wait.”

Ember, hearing a tired voice suddenly speak, started looking around for it’s source only for his eyes to land upon the other wolf. Not willing to waste the little time he had left in this world by entertaining yet another wolf, he ignored her words and continued floating towards his mistress.

Minx only wanted to ask the fire spirit who he was and more importantly, if Edward was alright. Seeing him choosing to ignore her and walk away, Minx let out a sigh and turned her eyes on Edward again.

She didn’t understand how hurt Edward was, but seeing the struggle and desperation on the wolf’s face, she moved her eyes to the dragon in the distance once again: “Please help Edward, I beg you.”

The dragon, hearing the wolf beg for him to help Edward, finally stopped. Looking back at the blue wolf and seeing the confusion and fear in it’s eyes made him remember his mistress’ expression as she fled with her egg from the dragon kingdom.

He knew that his time was limited and that he would probably not last long in the material plane without a contract to bind him here. Not wishing for his mistress’ child to be left in the hands of other people, he turned around and flew right towards the blue wolf’s head.

Reaching up in front of Minx, Ember said: “Are you willing to form a contract with me? My name…”. However, before he could finish his proposal, a strange black and white light started shinning from under the blue wolf’s belly and Ember got pulled inside an unknown space.

Looking at the woman that appeared in front of him, a single thought passed through Ember’s mind.

‘Her too? Has the mother tree really forsaken me today?’
