Edward took a moment to check the place out from the entrance before proceeding to carry the egg inside as well.

Once everyone, Minx included, was inside, Edward turned once again towards the huge red door and asked: “What is this place?”

Hearing no answer, he turned to look at Flastrdra. Seeing her giving him a weird look, Edward laughed awkwardly and said: “I’m sorry, for a moment I forgot you can’t really speak. Is it safe to head deeper through that door?”

Flastrdra stayed silent for a good moment before shaking her head in answer. Edward wanted to ask her more questions to find out about this place when Fenrir saved him the trouble.

[That’s a dungeon entrance.]

Edward got even more curious about the place after hearing it was a dungeon. Since there was no adventurer camp right outside the entrance, it was safe to assume that it was not a dungeon belonging to the adventurer guild.

Since Flastrdra was the one who brought them here and she could answer yes or no questions with ease, Edward asked: “Flastrdra, are the monsters inside stronger than level 8?”

Seeing her shook her head, Edward got a little excited and turned towards Minx: “How about it, girl? Want to go and have a look?” if it was really a dungeon he could hunt in, he didn’t mind returning here later together with his party. A dungeon that didn’t belong to the guild meant that they could keep all the monster cores to themselves

Minx nodded in agreement and Edward turned towards Flastrdra: “We’re going in to take a look. Don’t worry, we won’t head in too deep but we’ll probably spend some time in there.”

Flastrdra just ignored Edward and walked next to her egg. Now that they were at the entrance of this dungeon, she felt like a heavy weight was lifted off her shoulders. There was also the exhaustion of having spend two entire days without rest so she just wanted to sleep right now.

Edward, together with Minx, headed for the red gate in front of them and passed through. After entering the gate, the way forward continued as a 50 or so feet wide downwards slope. On both sides of the path there was only a chasm extending downwards farther than Edward was able to see. Also, the only source of light inside the entire place appeared to be some sort of red crystals embedded into the sides of the path.

The two continued for like ten minutes until they finally encountered their first group of monsters. It was a small flock of three flying monsters that looked like a combination between a dog and an eagle. Edward frowned when he saw that the monsters in here were of the flying type, only having bad experiences with flying types.

The birds descended towards Minx and Edward almost instantly. Seeing the speed at which they were flying towards him, Edward approximated their level to be around five or six, which was not really a big deal for either him or Minx to deal with.

Motioning for Minx to stay still, Edward waited until the beasts were less then three feet away before casting his Water Whip and slicing through all three of them at the same time.

The six halves of monsters landed on the path and Edward was about to continue forward when he spotted a small glistening light coming from one of the beast bodies.

Walking closer, he grabbed the red monster core and dragged it out of it’s body. Looking at the monster core in his hand for a moment, he confirmed their strength to only at level five and turned towards Minx: “Do you want it?”. He knew Minx loved monster cores and he had no real use for it.

Minx came forward and sniffed a couple of times before shaking her head and saying: “Too weak. Minx not like fire.”

“I see. I could keep it for Flastrdra but I really want to rest for a while right now…” said Edward with a sigh. Placing the core to the side next to him, he continued forwards while saying to Minx: “I’m going to head a little bit deeper inside before letting the wolf hunt for a while. Do you want to remain with me or head back?”

“Minx will hunt.” Replied Minx, an answer Edward pretty much expected from her.

Petting her gently on the head, he continued: “Alright. Listen up, Minx. I want you to try and keep the wolf from heading back towards the entrance and attacking the dragon. Can you do that?”

“Minx will listen to Edward.” Replied Minx and Edward patted her head once more before as they kept walking deeper inside.

The two walked for about an hour until Edward felt they were deep enough for the wolf to not retrace his steps and just eat the monsters around. They had encountered a few more groups of flying beasts but Edward dispatched them with little to no effort. Laying down on the ground, Edward closed his eyes and appeared inside his mind almost instantly.

“Fenrir, what’s the wolf doing?” Edward waited for a while before asking about the situation outside.

“Don’t worry. He’s heading downward and doesn’t seem that interested in your dragon friend.”

Edward slept for the entire night and when he finally woke up, he found himself in a completely different looking place. He was no longer on the slope heading downward but in a giant hall, one that seem to endlessly stretch in all directions.

“It looks like most dungeons share the same design.” Said Edward as he placed his tablet on the red floor underneath. Seeing that it did indeed open a path towards a lower floor, he stepped back and looked up next. Seeing there was indeed a ceiling above, he wondered if the wolf has descended to the second floor.

Figuring he would find out the answer in due time, Edward turned towards his companion and asked: “Minx, how are you? Don’t you need to rest for a bit as well?”

“Minx good. Does Edward want to hunt now?”

“Hmm… let’s just return to the entrance so you can take some rest as well.”

Minx didn’t have anything to complain and they followed Fenrir’s directions until they reached the dungeon’s entrance again. It appeared that the wolf has indeed gone done one floor during the last night, but the level of the enemies, to Edward’s surprise, seemed to have increased to seven on the second floor.

Having reached Flastrdra and seeing her trying to warm the egg that was almost the same size as her by slowly going around it with her wings outstretched, Edward felt kind of bad for the dragon’s situation.

“Hey Flastrdra, how about coming with me to gain a few levels in the dungeon? The monsters I hunt while heading downwards give nothing of value for me anyway so you can easily gain some levels just by following me.”

Flastrdra appeared quite excited at first but then looked at the egg near her and shook her head. Understanding what she was worried about, Edward turned towards Minx and asked: “Minx, can you sleep with your body enlarged?”

“Yes, Minx can.”

“Then, would you do me a favor and protect this egg while I go with Flastrdra to level her up a bit? You can also make a lot better job of keeping the egg warm with your giant body as you sleep.”

“Minx wants to come hunt too.”

Edward chuckled and rubbed her head affectionately before saying: “I know, but you must also be tired after all this time without sleep. We can go hunt later when we leave for the City of Ashes.”

Edward spent a few more minutes convincing both Minx and Flastrdra to agree. Stepping back onto the downwards slope with Flastrdra following after him, Edward turned towards her and asked: “Do you level up by eating monster cores as well?”

Flastrdra shook her head and summoned her status tablet in reply.

“Oh, I forgot you have a status tablet as well. Let’s try to gain you at least one level today.” He knew that killing 250 monsters in one day was a bit difficult with his mana poisoning, but he wanted to try anyway. Leaving her to defend her egg while still being level one didn’t sit well with him.

The dragon followed silently behind as Edward used his water whip to kill any enemy they encountered on the path down. The enemies once again provided no challenge for him, but there was a slight problem. After killing a total of 37 monsters, his water whip crumbled in his hand and disappeared.

“If I had some sort of weapon I wouldn’t have to spend mana to hunt these low level enemies..” Muttered Edward as he summoned his status tablet to check on his remaining mana.

<Mana: 353/1356>

“Only three whips. It would be difficult to hunt more than a hundred monsters today. Maybe I could use the wolf form to kill a few without using mana but that’s also just as troublesome. If I remained without both stamina and mana, I have no way of dealing with any unexpected situation that might occur.”

Sighing slightly, Edward turned towards Flastrdra and said: “It looks we’ll only be able to collect only half of the life force we planned today. My mana won’t last until you reach level two.”

The two headed downwards for as long as his second water whip lasted before Edward made the call to return and just kill all the monsters they encountered on the way back as well.

Once his third water whip disappeared too, Edward used his wolf form for the rest of the journey. Once they stepped back inside the room at the entrance, they found Minx still sleeping while keeping the egg warm using her fur,

Edward spend two more days inside the dungeon, the entire time helping Flastrdra reach level two. To Minx’s dismay, she was mostly on egg warming duty, the only exception being the nights when she would hunt with Edward in his wolf form.

Once Flastrdra reached level two, Edward asked her for her status tablet, hoping she might have some skill that could help her fight now, but was disappointed to find that they all still appeared locked, just as they did when she was level one.

[She needs a new fire spirit to be able to use her fire magic.] said Fenrir all of the sudden.

“This is weird.. Can’t dragons just use fire magic the same way Minx uses ice magic?” asked Edward, finding the situation a little strange.

A small glint appeared in Flastrdra’s eyes when she heard Edward’s question, but it disappeared almost instantly, unnoticed by both Minx and Edward.

Fenrir fell silent, she herself not knowing the answer to Edward’s question. Resigning himself to his fate, Edward stayed inside the dungeon for an entire extra month, all the time doing nothing but helping Flastrdra increase her level, hoping she would at least gain one fighting skill or something.

One month later, he has managed to barely help her reach level six and that was because from level five to six, they had to hunt a lot further down where the monsters were level seven and their killing speed slowed down considerably. He has also managed to reduce his mana poisoning a bit, his total mana now reaching around 500 or so.

Seeing that Flastrdra has just leveled up, Edward asked to see her status tablet again, hoping there was any change, but to his dismay, there wasn’t. Besides her mana going up, her skills and spells still appeared as locked.

Now, he had a tough decision to make. He didn’t want to leave her like this, but he was gone from the city for far too long. He wanted to meet up with his party as well as make sure Violet has not encountered any trouble while he was gone.

Once they retreated back into the safety of the room at the dungeon gate, Edward came to a decision and said: “This is as much as I can help you. I have to return to the City of Ashes and check on some friends.. I don’t know when or if I can return so be careful Flastrdra.”

The dragon nodded towards Edward and walked up to her egg before closing her eyes to rest. Seeing that the dragon looked fine, Edward asked Minx to increase her size and climbed on her back before making his way outside riding on her back.

A good while after Edward was gone, Flastrdra stood on all fours and her body increased in size by about two times. A small amulet appeared in front of her before floating slowly towards her egg and forming a fire barrier covering the egg in it’s entirety.

She looked in the direction Edward has left and said: “Human.. No, Edward. I apologize for deceiving you, but trust doesn’t come easily to me. If you still live once I regain my strength, I promise to look for you and fulfill the deal Ember has made. Until then, stay safe..”

Her words ending, Flastrdra flew straight through the dungeon entrance and disappeared into it’s depths.
