[You can’t fall asleep.] noticing that Edward was closing his eyes, Fenrir warned him right away.

Seeing that Edward showed no reaction to her voice, she tried getting Edward’s attention by using the mark on his arm.

Edward opened his eyes wide due to the pain that was coming form his arm. He looked around confused for a moment before realizing what was just about to happen.

“Thank you, Fenrir. That was honestly too close…” he didn’t even want to think what would have happened if he really turn right next to Violet.

[It’s alright, but we need to talk about something…] said Fenrir in a serious tone.

“In the morning…” replied Edward and he laid down staring at the ceiling thinking about last night. During their night activities, he has noticed Violet’s eyes suddenly turn purple and he figured that was what Fenrir wanted to speak about as well. He didn’t know what it was, but the way he lost control of his emotions right after was a bit disturbing.

Eventually, Violet woke up as well. They both cleaned themselves up using Edward’s water magic and changed the sheets before laying back down on the bed. Violet took her seat next to Edward, her head resting on his chest and went back to sleep right after saying goodnight.

Moving his hand through Violet’s soft hair, Edward kept replaying the moment Violet’s eyes changed through his mind and kept trying to remember more about what has happened. All the memories he had right after were kind of fuzzy and hard to remember clearly. He didn’t ask her about it since he wanted to hear what Fenrir had to say first.

Early in the morning of the next day, Edward had breakfast with Violet before saying his goodbye and heading for the adventurer guild to meet up with the others.

“You want to talk about Violet’s eyes turning purple, don’t you?” asked Edward, ignoring the people passing by.

[Indeed.]

“Do you have any idea why it happened?”

[Not exactly, but the moment her eyes turned purple, some sort of bridge was formed between your souls. All those feelings you got at that moment that made you lose control came directly from her soul and invaded yours. They even started affecting this space I am residing in… I’ve never seen something like that before, but I can tell you that power is dangerous..]

“Do you think she knows about it?”

[I don’t think so, but that’s from all the interactions I observed between the two of you and I can’t really be sure. I know you’re not going to like this, but I think it would be better if…]

“No.. Not until I at least find out what is happening to her.” Interrupted Edward, already knowing what she was going to suggest. Breaking up with Violet was the one thing he didn’t want to consider right now.

[Alright. Then, at least promise me you’re going to be more careful around her, even more so during your nightly adventures. A power like that...]

“Noted.”

Edward continued walking towards the adventurer guild but his mind was still on Violet and what happened last night. He couldn’t say that he wasn’t scared, the way he lost control of himself last night actually terrifying him, but he was even more worried about what this power would do to their relationship. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that their relationship was the one normal thing he had in this world and now he was on the point of loosing that as well.

When he arrived at the adventure guild, Ingvar, Kara and Mya were already there waiting for him.

Seeing him approach, Mya was the first one to run up to him and said: “Edward, I’m so sorry for behaving like that the last time you came to my house.”

His mind was completely preoccupied with the Violet situation and he hasn’t even thought about that at all. Now that she reminded him, he still was not in the mood to probe into her situation so he put on a forced smile and said: “Huh? No problem. I was in a hurry as well.”

Ingvar and Kara also joined the two and Kara noticed Edward’s distraught expression, prompting her to say: “Morning Edward. Did anything happen? This ;hero carrying the weight of the world on his back; look doesn’t really suit you.”

Edward brushed it off like it was nothing and replied: “Nothing major happened, just a small thing with Violet. Are you guys ready?”

Kara and Ingvar exchanged a discrete look when they noticed Edward changed the subject, but didn’t press on as Ingvar replied: “Yeah, we’re ready. Echo said she’ll be waiting for us at the western gate.”

“Alright. Do you mind if we take Minx as well? She just as strong as I am right now and I don’t feel like leaving her here alone.”

No one had any problem with taking Minx with them since they have noticed her grow in strength when they headed south with Eddena.

Making a small detour towards the southern gate, they picked up Minx before heading towards the western gate to join up with Echo as well.

Echo was sitting down on a fence with a bored expression while playing with one of her shields. Seeing the group approaching on Minx’s back, Echo spring to her feet and ran up to them.

“Hey, Ed. Long time no see.”

“Long time no see, Echo. How are you?”

“Probably better than you. I mean, I haven been at the center of a beast tide recently.” Replied Echo with a laugh as she climbed on top of Minx and took a seat next to Edward.

Instructing Minx to increase her size to the maximum and head straight towards the dungeon, Edward rested on his back and closed his eyes. A few seconds later, he felt a small finger pressing against his cheek and opened one eye to look at Echo next to him.

“Oh, come on. We haven’t seen each other in so long and now you’re going to ignore me. Tell me more about what happened during this time. How was the beast tide? What else have you done?…” Said Echo with a grin, apparently being in a really great mood. At least she was in a better mood than Edward was right now.

Edward sighed and started chatting with Echo about what each of them did after they returned from the dungeon the last time. The distraction also helped Edward take his mind off the Violet situation.

Apparently Echo was in Oasis for quite a while. She didn’t tell him exactly what she did there, but Edward was quite interested in her stories about the city and other places in the south. Eventually the others joined the conversation as well and everyone merrily chatted up until they reached the dungeon. Edward also took advantage of this to try and make Mya integrate into the group as well since she was quite a shy girl.

As she laid her eyes on the dungeon where she lost her friends after such a long time, Mya’s eyes started to grow slightly wet. Noticing this, Edward rubbed her hair and said: “Are you alright?”

Not wanting to make Edward worry about her, Mya slapped her cheeks and returned to her usual smile as she nodded towards him. He could still see the sadness in her eyes, but he understood what she was feeling and just gave a reassuring smile back.

Once they reached the area adventurers camped into, the party stepped down from Minx’s back and started heading towards the dungeon on foot, not wanting to scare the other people camping there or the guards.

The party soon arrived in front of the guards placed at the entrance. After discussing with Ignvar for a while, one of the guards looked at Minx before asking: “Are you taking the wolf with you inside?”

Ignvar nodded and said: “Yes. Is there any problem?”. Edward has told him he has taken Minx into this dungeon with him before and he couldn’t really understand what was wrong.

The guard brought his mouth to Ingvar’s ear and whispered something. Frowning slightly, Ingvar said: “It’s alright. I’ll take responsibility if anything were to happen. That should be alright with you.”

The guard nodded back, not really ready to argue with the adventurer guild leader’s son and let the party pass by to enter the dungeon.

“What did he want?” asked Edward once they were a bit further away from the guards.

“They have heard stories about a blue wolf attacking the city gate and were worried Minx might create trouble here as well. Too bad they can’t really afford to not give me some face.”

“I think that’s called abuse of power or something like that.” Added Echo in a joking tone from the side.

“Well, would you have preferred we sent Minx back?” asked Ingvar.

“Hey, I was just kidding. Why are you so serious all of a sudden?” replied Echo.

“Minx caused trouble for Edward?” Minx asked after hearing the conversation between the others, prompting Edward to immediately console her: “Of course not, Minx. You’re a good girl.”

While speaking to each other, the party finally entered the first floor. After defeating the first set of monsters with ease, they skipped directly to the third floor using their tablets.

Lading on the third floor, Ingvar turned towards Mya and said: “Can you show me your status tablet?”

Mya didn’t have any problem with showing her status tablet to the members of her party so she handed it to Ingvar immediately. After taking a good look at it, he said: “Alright. We’re going to speed through the first eight floors and hunt just enough monsters for you to level up before heading to the next floor. We’ll take care of the monsters and you just need to stay in the back with Kara and Edward. Understood?”

Mya nodded back and the party moved in their usual formation. Echo and Ingvar would stay in front, changing with Edward in case any of them got tired or injured. Minx would stay in the middle and support both the front and back line as needed. Lastly, Edward, Kara and now Mya would support the others from the back line. They didn’t need to move in formation for the first six or even seven floors, but they wanted Mya to understand how their party usually hunted in the dungeon.

The fact that they reached the seventh floor by the end of the first day left Mya completely stunned. She still remembered how hard it was too hunt with her old party, but with this new one, only Ingvar and Echo were enough to solo everything up to the current floor. She was already level six by the time it started darkening and the party moved into the safety of the staircase connecting the dungeon’s floors. Once there, Ingvar ordered food for everyone as usual, this time even Minx included.

Mya brought her food with her as she moved closer to Edward and said: “Edward, is it really alright for me to stay with you guys?”

Edward didn’t understand what she meant and asked: “Why wouldn’t it be alright?”

“Well, the others are simply amazing and I’m.. not.”

“Well, you’re still a beginner so it’s understandable you don’t get to participate in the fighting, but your job is to heal our injuries so you don’t really have to fight anyway.”

Ingvar heard their conversation and also came to them as he said: “Edward is right. A cleric can’t really do much in the early levels, but that would change once you reach level twenty. It’s normal so you don’t have to be so hard on yourself.”

“What happens at level 20?” asked Edward, not being that familiar with the cleric class.

“Well, clerics only have basic healing abilities, all of them requiring physical contact with the person they’re healing, but once a cleric reaches level 20, the Church allows them promote to the priest class. Priests can use ranged and area of effect healing spells. A priest would also be able to take other subclasses from the same category, gaining access to a variety of new spells, all quite important in a high level parties.” Replied Ingvar matter-of-factly.

“What spells?” asked Edward.

“Buffing spells that increase different parameters, mana transfer, stamina transfer, purify, farsight and so on. All of them supportive abilities but quite powerful when used right.”

“See? There’s nothing for you to worry about.” Said Edward towards Mya before throwing a big chunk of raw meat towards Minx.

Once everyone finished eating, Edward decided he would postpone sleeping for tonight, not ready to explain to Mya about his condition. He rested his head on Minx’s fur as he started thinking about how he could find out more about Violet’s condition. Since he never heard anything about her mother and his father was dead for some time, the best idea that came to him was to ask Lara or the demi-humans that live in the residential area.

A few hours into the night, he heard soft footsteps approaching followed by Mya’s quiet voice: “Edward, are you sleeping?”

Edward opened his eyes and looked at Mya with an inquisitive look, not knowing why she would come so late at night. Mya rubbed her fingers anxiously as her eyes drifted towards Minx.

“Do you want to sleep on Minx’s fur as well?” asked Edward with a chuckle, able to guess what she was thinking.

Seeing her nodding happily, Edward lifted his head and said: “Minx, increase your size a little bit to make room for Mya as well.”

Once Mya sat down next to him and closed her eyes to sleep, Edward returned to his thoughts as well.

The night passed without any incident and was soon morning again. After everyone ate a quick breakfast, it was time to head to the eight floor and start the real hunt.
