Some distance away from the Violet Flower Inn, a young man was watching the front door with a complicated look. His back was resting upon the fence of a building and he was repeatedly tapping it with his foot.
“Come on, Edward. You just faced a literal God. What’s there to fear?”
[If you keep mumbling stuff to yourself and don’t stop distracting me, I’ll take over your body and let you play with the wolf. Maybe then you’ll have a reason to be afraid.]
“I just have a bad feeling…” said Edward and finally moved towards the doors. His hand shook as it touched the handle and he hesitated again, but the door opened by itself and a pig demi-human appeared in front of him.
The moment the door opened, Edward and Violet’s eyes met and he knew there was no going back now. Smiling awkwardly, he took a seat at a table and waited for her to come to him. Since it was still quite early in the morning, she was still busy serving customers.
Ten minutes later, Violet took a seat in front of him and served him a cup of ale. “Welcome back, Edward.”
Her tail was waggling wildly behind the seat and her small canines were showing from how wide her grin was.
“Morning, Violet. How are you?” said Edward, the bad feeling he was having growing even stronger.
“I’m happy. I didn’t expect you to come back so soon. Did you have a good time in the dungeon? Did you increase your level? Are you free later?” Violet took him by surprise as she bombarded him with a series of quick questions. He was used to the quiet, somewhat shy Violet.
“Mmm, yes, yes, and probably still yes. Did something good happen while I was away? You seem especially energetic today.” Said Edward while taking a sip of the ale she served him.
“You noticed?” she brought her head closer and whispered in Edward’s ear: “I didn’t have my period this morning.”
*Puh!* Edward spit the ale in his mouth all over the table and Violet broke into a fit of laughter, not minding the ale that stained her clothes.
“I’m joking. Haha, you should have seen your face.” Said Violet while continuing to chuckle.
“How come you’re the one teasing me today?” asked Edward, finding her behavior weirder by the minute.
“I’m just happy to see you. Wait for a minute, it seems some customers need me. I'll be back in a minute.” Said Violet with a wink before standing up and roaming around the tables in the lobby.
‘What the hell was that? Did I land in another world again?’
Sanding up, Edward walked towards the bath in the back.
“Fenrir…”
[Yeah, I noticed it too.]
“But her eyes were not purple. What the hell is going on?”
[I don’t know, but whatever is happening to her seems to get worse. There was also something wrong with her soul. If I remember right, she only started behaving erratically ever since you had your first intercourse.]
“Second.”
[The second time was when we first noticed the change in her eye color, but your first time was not completely normal either.]
Now that Edward thought back to their first time, it was indeed, as Fenrir said, wilder than he has expected from her.
“Maybe it’s a consequence of demi-humans losing their virginity?”
[I doubt it. It wouldn’t explain why it got even worse after the second time. You need to find more information about her mother. Whatever the problem is, it didn’t come from the father. ]
“But where from? From what she’s told me, Arthur never spoke about her mother.”
[You can try with that woman at the adventurer guild. Since hers and Violet’s father were friends, she might have an idea or something. It's worth a try. Whatever is going on with her appears to only get worse with time.]
“Alright. I'll see what I can find.”
Edward returned to the inn’s lobby and spent a few more minutes speaking to Violet before making an excuse he had some business in the city and taking his leave. He went straight to the second floor of the adventurer guild and luckily, Lara was there today.
Lara noticed the urgency on Edward’s face and quickly got rid of the customer she was speaking with. When Edward took a seat, she asked: “Did anything happen?”
Edward didn’t bother hiding anything and started explaining the weird stuff that was going on with Violet. He trusted Lara to a certain degree, and it was an emergency, so he didn't bother hiding anything from her.
“I do not know myself, but maybe father does. He and Arthur were quite close.” Lara picked a piece of paper and drew a quickly improvised map.
“Not my finest work, but it should help you reach my place. When you get there, try to knock as loud as you can since father’s hearing is not as good as it used to be.”
“Thanks, Lara. I’ll treat you to lunch after everything is solved.” Said Edward as he picked up the paper and rushed outside.
“I’ll hold you onto that.” Yelled Lara after him, and Edward just waved one hand backward and continued down the stairs.
Back in the residential district, it took him quite some time to find the right place, since Lara wasn’t exactly an artist. After reaching in front of some modest house that seemed to be the right place, he walked up to the door and knocked hard on the door.
A tall and stern-looking old man opened the door and looked down at Edward.
“Who are you and what do you want?” his tone was grumpy, his face frowning and his arms crossed at his chest in impatience.
Edward bowed towards the man and said: “Lara from the adventurer guild told me I could find you here, sir. My name is Edward Black and I would like to ask you some questions about your old friend, Arthur Glass.”
The man’s expression eased up slightly at the mention of Lara and Arthur’s names. Looking Edward up and down, he asked: “And who are you? Your name doesn’t right any bell.”
Edward felt a little awkward but maintained his bow as he said: “I’m currently dating his daughter, Violet.”

The man sighed like he somehow expected this and moved to the side to make space for Edward. “Come in.”
Edward walked past the man and noticed that the interior of the house was just as modest as the exterior. The hallway he was in didn’t have any special decorations besides two pots with flowers right beside the door, but everything was clean and well maintained.
The man nudged Edward forward until they reached a small kitchen and motioned for him to sit down.
“I’ll pick something from my room. I have nothing to serve you with, but if you are thirsty, you can help yourself to some water from over there.” Said the old man as he pointed towards a wooden bucket and walked out.
Edward had to wait for about five minutes until the old man came back to the kitchen. He took a seat on the only other chair and said: “So, what’s this about Arthur and his daughter?”
“Sir, I wanted to ask you if Arthur mentioned anything about Violet’s mother, especially what race she was.”
The man shook his head and said: “He didn’t. Did you and that little girl have sex?”
The man’s question sent Edward into a coughing fit. He didn’t wait for Edward to finish coughing as he already guessed the answer from his reaction and continued.
“During a quest deep in the northern forests to investigate some place adventures had gone missing from, we spend about two months searching for clues but came up with nothing. The others members of the party called it quits, but I needed the money since my wife had just become pregnant and I was not from a noble family as the rest.”
“Not willing to give up on the reward, I remained and continue searching. Since Arthur was a great friend, he stayed as well. Over the following week, nothing special happened, but one morning, as I woke up, Arthur was gone from our camp.”
“I kept searching for him for an entire month, but when I didn’t find any clue, I had no choice but to return home. I couldn’t keep missing from my wife and child’s lives. He returned two years later to the city carrying the little girl, Violet. He never told me anything about what happened during those two years, no matter how much I asked.”
“One day, many years later, he came to my door and passed me a letter. He said that if anything happened to him, I should keep watch over his daughter, and if she ever found someone she loved or got married, I should give this letter to the boy immediately.”
Once his words ended, he pushed forward an aged letter, with the seal already opened. Edward picked up the letter and didn’t bother mentioning the broken seal as he read the text on it.
‘This is Arthur Glass, Violet’s father. If you’re reading this, I guess I’m already gone and you are my daughter’s man. It’s quite frustrating, not being there to beat you up a few times.
You probably wonder why I wrote you this letter. It’s because it concerns the happiness and fate of you two. If you love my daughter, I will have to ask you to never have intercourse with her. I know you might take this as the ramblings of an overprotective father, but that is not it.
Please, if you love my daughter at least a fraction of how much I do, never take that step. If you can’t make that sacrifice, return this letter to my friend Aldes here and break up with her.
I am saying this for both her sake and yours. Her losing her purity will mean your death and an even more horrible fate for her. Please, I beg you.’
Edward put down the letter and frowned.
‘Her father must have known this would happen if we have sex, but the deed is already done and it doesn’t offer any solution to his problem.’
“Sir, as you have inferred, this letter came too late…” said Edward awkwardly, hoping the old man would have some clue.
“Sigh… it’s my fault. I kept watch over the little girl for a few years, but as I kept getting older, it simply became impossible to continue watching over her like before. I asked her to tell me if she ever met someone she loved, but alas... she never did.”
‘Of course, she didn’t. What girl would come to tell an old fart like you she was planning on having sex with someone…’
“Looks like I’ll have to check that place where Arthur disappeared if I want to find out more…” said Edward.
“Before that, how are you not dead and what happened to Violet?” asked the old man. Edward just realized that the man was right, but he didn’t have an explication for it either.
“I don’t know how I am still alive. As for Violet, she’s behaving completely different from usual, like she’s being possessed or something. Do you know anything about the reason that might happen?”
“I can’t say I do. Like I told you, Arthur never spoke about those two years and would always change the subject whenever I mentioned it. You might be right. Traveling to where he went missing might be the only way for you to find any clues. Do you plan to head there? It will not be a simple journey.”
“Doesn’t matter. I have no other choice. Please tell me where that place is, sir.”
The old man nodded and stood up. He walked outside the kitchen for a moment and returned carrying an old map. Laying the map on the table, he pointed toward a forest to the north of the continent.
“To reach this place, you must first pass the Fallwrath mountains to the north of the City of Ashes. When we went there, there was a path going straight through the mountain, but the lava level in Fallwrath Volcano increased a few years ago and it covered the path. If you want to reach there now, you must find another path or go over the mountains, both options being just as perilous.”
The man then marked a place inside the forest with an X and said: “This is the general area where Arthur went missing back then. I’m afraid this is the most help I can provide you with.”
Edward inspected the map, trusting Fenrir would memorize it if he were to forget anything, and stood up. He bowed towards the old man and said: “That’s a lot. I have to make some preparations so I'll take my leave. Thank you for all the help, old man.”
“No need for thanks. I’ll do anything I can to help Arthur’s daughter. If these bones of mine were not so old, I would have also joined you, unfortunately…”
Edward bowed and said nothing more. Rushing out of the house, he headed straight for Ingvar’s place. Asking him for information was a lot better than going to the adventurer guild.
Ingvar opened the door and frowned when he noticed the urgency in Edward’s steps as he was climbing up. “Anything wrong?”
Edward nodded and said: “Please find out for me if there’s a path going through Fallwrath Mountains to the forests in the far north. If not, what is the safest way of passing the mountains? Can you do it?”
“I don’t know myself, but I can ask father about it. The guild should have some info.”
“Alright. I’ll come back later to see if you found anything out. Also, find out if my master has returned. Thanks.” Edward didn’t wait for Ingvar to say anything else and started rushing in the library's direction.
“Fenrir, I’m going to go through all the books I can find on demi-humans and the north of the continent as fast as I can. I want you to memorize everything and check if there’s any information about what’s happening to Violet or what was going on with all those disappearances in the north in the past.”
[Alright.] replied Fenrir, understanding the urgency of the situation.
Edward spent the rest of the day just shuffling to any book he could find while counting on Fenrir’s perfect memory to scan for clues. As it started darkening, he returned to Ingvar, hoping he would receive some good news.
