“You got stronger while I was gone.”, said Eddena with a smile, taking her hand off the knife at her back and strengthening her bent forward posture.
Edward looked at her carefully and frowned: “You haven’t changed at all, not even your clothes. Were you stuck in here this entire time?”. As his words ended, he created a pair of water trousers for himself as well.
Smiling wryly, Eddena didn’t seem to care about Edward’s exposure as she looked down at her battered clothes before smiling wryly: “Indeed. The last few years have not been easy…”
“Where are we?” asked Edward as he looked at the walls covered in strange markings and started walking towards her.
“I don’t know. I had a teleportation artifact given to me by the guild leader. He told me he got two of them from a merchant but never got to use them and he didn’t know where they would lead. He kept them as a last resort method and gave one to me as well since I always take missions alone. From what I can tell, they take you from the grave straight to prison.” Replied Eddena as she walked forward as well.
Edward wanted to ask something but was surprised when Eddena brought her hands around his head and pulled him into a hug. He wanted to move away when he heard Eddena speak softly: “Good to see you, kid. I thought I would die of boredom here alone, but at least now we can die together.”
He returned the small hug and chuckled: “Good to see you too, Ena.”
Eddena let him go and asked: “How did you get your hands on one of those talismans? Did you finally join our guild?”
Chuckling slightly, Edward shook his head and went to one of those walls. Putting his status tablet on it, he waited for a second, but nothing happened.
“So it’s not a dungeon? What is thorough that door?” asked Edward as he looked at an arched door not that far away from them.
Eddena sat down on the ground and looked at Edward before saying: “From what I could tell, we’re inside some sort of castle, an ancient castle covered in those markings. I’ve been trying to find an exit, but the walls are impossible to break and there are no doors leading outside. If you hit the walls too hard, those markings will light up and you’ll get hit by a backlash.”
Edward nodded and turned towards Eddena, not too worried about this prison: “Can you give me a tour? I want to see the place for myself.”
Eddena nodded and stood back before walking Edward around the halls outside of that room. On the way, she kept asking about what happened on the outside.
“So, the lizards have taken sis?” asked Eddena with a raised eyebrow. To Edward’s surprise, she also didn’t seem that worried.
Edward nodded and rubbed one wall of the corridor.
“It happened a while ago, around three years. I went to look for her after I got stronger and entered some dungeon under the dragon’s kingdom while I was trying to sneak inside under their walls. There was where I found the talismans and activated one, ending up in this prison as you call it. Did you say you attacked all the spots of these walls?”
“Most of them. Going into that dungeon is too reckless. I heard that there is a strong old dragon who even took control of the dungeon’s core, turning the entire dungeon into some sort of dragon fortress and hunting grounds. What level are you now by the way?”
Edward threw his status tablet towards Eddena before creating a small water needle and hitting the wall. Just as Eddena said, the markings around the place hit by his needle lightened up and his needle was absorbed inside the wall before flying right back at him.
He stopped the needle before it hit his forehead and was surprised to realize he still had control over the mana.
“Space loop?”, muttered Edward.
As he was analyzing the wall, Eddena heaved a sigh of relief before asking: “How did your unique mix into an assassin-related class?”
“And who should I ask?” replied Edward with a chuckle as he caught the tablet thrown by Eddena in midair and placed it back inside his soul space. “It happened when I hit level 20, right after my promotion to intermediate water mage. Can you pass me a knife? I want to try something out.”
Eddena threw him a knife as well and Edward hit the wall with it. Feeling his hand become numb from the impact, he moved to graze the wall softly while observing the tip of the dagger.
“Same force. Definitely a space loop.” He then placed his hand on the wall and pushed on it as hard as he could, but there was no force pushing back against his hand. “But it doesn’t work on living things. it only works with mana and weapon attacks. Maybe it can’t influence the soul?”
Eddena saw him focused on the wall while muttering to himself and just watched from the side in silence. She didn’t have many hopes of him figuring a way out, but a fresh pair of eyes might notice something she missed.
Led by Eddena, Edward looked over the entire ruin which did indeed look like a castle. Long halls and plenty of rooms, both small and large, all of them mostly empty with the same markings covering all the walls.
Looking at Eddena that was following him, Edward heaved a heavy sigh before asking: “Fenrir, any idea?”
Eddena raised an eyebrow and was about to speak when Fenrir answered.
[The wolf could probably consume the space loop, but Eddena would also be in danger. There’s also the probability of ending up somewhere even worse since we don’t know what’s behind this space wall. Also, I can’t feel the chaos mark I left inside the dungeon. Eddena, since the talismans are the ones that teleported you both here, did no one else come in here all this time?]
Fenrir’s voice startled Eddena for a moment but she recovered quickly and answered. “There were three dragons that appeared as well, but they were all injured and I killed them all. I would have ended up killed by them if they got the chance to recover.”
[You could have tried to observe how they planned on getting out. Maybe they had a way.]
“I thought of that as well, but considered it too risky. With Edward here, we might be able to fight if another one comes.”
[You might not have the time. In at most a month, Edward would have to turn and you will be the first to die.]
Eddena nodded, already aware of Edward’s curse before asking: “Are you the source of the curse?”
[You could say that.]
With a hesitant expression, Eddena asked: “So about this curse…]
“So, Fenrir, any other idea? We can talk about the curse at another time.”, asked Edward, interrupting the two’s conversation. Eddena closed her mouth and didn’t continue with her question.
[Let’s see how the barrier reacts to chaos. Place your mark on it.]
“Eddena, take a few steps back.” Said Edward before placing his mark on the wall, the same way he did with the tree inside the dungeon. Not long after chaos energy came into contact with the wall, the entire structure started shaking slightly, prompting Fenrir to stop inserting chaos energy into it.

[The building will crumble if we continue. All the markings appear to be connected. If we break a small part, the entire thing will fall on your heads.]
Edward nodded and took his arm back from the wall.
“What did you do with the dragons’ corpses? we might find a clue on how they planned on exiting this place on them.”
“They disappeared as soon as I killed them. I don’t know why.”
“Did it happen on the same platform where I arrive?”
Seeing her nod, Edward said: “Let’s head back there and check the place carefully. That platform is the only place different in all the corridors and rooms. Might as well be the way out...”
The two returned the way they came and Edward started looking over the circular platform while discussing with Fenrir and answering Eddena’s questions.
A few hours later, Eddena suddenly stopped speaking mid-sentence, causing Edward to turn and check what happened.
When his eyes landed on her, he could see her supporting her body with one hand while panting heavily. He couldn’t see her face because of the hair covering it, but he could see something was not right.
“What…”
[Turn. NOW!]
Edward didn’t hesitate at Fenrir’s words and turned in an instant before using his claws to block a dagger heading for his head. He jumped backward next and fixed his eyes on Eddena.
She didn’t give him any space to breathe as he could see her body getting surrounded by a small gust of wing and heading quickly towards him.
‘Does she think she can still fight me?’ thought Edward as he released his mana and four water tendrils extended from his body, tying her limbs mid-charge. The level difference between the two of them was too large and Fenrir’s warning stopped her surprise attack.
After making sure she couldn’t move, he took his human form again and asked: “What was that for?”
Eddena didn’t answer and just stared at him with an indifferent face. Looking into her clear and cold eyes, Edward got a familiar feeling from them. He couldn’t understand what it was until Fenrir explained.
[She’s under the influence of a curse.]
Edward’s eyes widened in amazement as he continued staring at Eddena and asked: “Same as me?”
[Yes and no, but the source seems similar. It should have been placed by Yggdrasil. I couldn’t feel it until now since it was dormant, but the moment it woke up I immediately recognized it.]
Edward nodded and asked: “What should we do now?”
[Just keep her restrained. She should be able to regain control over her body eventually, the same way you do.]
Edward sat down and stared at the struggling Eddena before asking: “How come she ended up cursed by Yggdrasil as well?”
[I don’t know. I didn’t pay much attention to Yggdrasil’s deeds before... You’ll have to ask her when she wakes up.]
Nodding, Edward just kept watching over the feral Eddena for over ten hours until her eyes flashed for a moment. She immediately looked at Edward and heaved a sigh of relief.
“Good thing you got stronger, kid. It would have sucked if I killed you as soon as you arrived to keep me company. You can let me down now, I won’t attack you for a while.”
Edward did as she told him to and just stared at her with an inquisitive look. Seeing his look, Eddena chuckled and said: “What are you staring at me like that? It’s not like you can be the only one carrying a curse.”
Edward nodded and asked: “Indeed, but you could have at least warned me. What if your attack succeeded?”
“I didn’t find the right moment and figured I still had more time, but I guess the presence of another living being here made me lose control early.” Replied Eddena with a sigh. “Sorry about that.”
“Who cursed you?” asked Edward after a nod, remembering he interrupted her earlier when she was saying something about a curse.
Eddena sat down with a sigh and shrugged her shoulders.
“I don’t know. I’m sure Circe does, but she never told me.”
“Circe? How would she know?” asked Edward next.
“She was the one who told me it was a curse, but I don’t know anything else. She always dodged the subject whenever I brought it up and as much as I investigated it on my own, I found no clue until I met you, bearing a similar curse.”
“I found how it works, eventually. The more I kill, the more time I have before I lose control of my body and get forced to kill by the curse. I’ve long gotten used to it, but since I’ve been stuck in here for so long without targets, it started getting a little out of control.”
Edward nodded and touched the mark on his arm before saying with a chuckle: “Bonding with someone over a curse. I never saw that happening.”
Eddena smiled back and said nothing. There was a trace of deep sorrow hidden behind her smile which Edward spotted by didn’t ask about it.
“Well, I can deal with your curse, but you probably can’t with mine so we should focus on finding a way out for now.”, said Edward, deciding to not mention he knew who placed her curse on her.
