Volume 2: Red Girl

“A Dwelling Stone….?”

I look closely at the stone that Master has placed on the table. I don’t feel any magic power from it. No matter which angle you look at it, it looks just like a regular stone.

As I was wondering what kind of effect it would have, Serena climbed onto the stone. The stone was so small that she was standing on a tiptoe.

“What’s going on?”

“What? Isn’t this is a “Stop Stone”? If you don’t get on it, you’re missing out.”

“……?”

I don’t get it. I don’t know what it means.

So I looked at Master, asking for help. He chuckled and had to explain it to me.

“The ‘Dwelling Stone’ is a perch for spirits. It is said that spirits rest on it since ancient times. To us, it is just a white stone, but to the spirits, it is like a bench on which they can rest.”

“I didn’t know there was such a thing. By the way, Serena called it a ‘Stop Stone’, so what is it?”

“Hmm, that’s interesting. It has been a long time since people could see spirits, so the language must have changed.”

Indeed, if you can’t see them, you can’t talk to them. It’s really interesting.

I wonder what she is going to do with this….

“Master, is this…”

“Oh I know, just wait a minute. Shizuku-san, is there anything left to eat… something sweet?”

“Yes, we have some left over from yesterday’s cookies.”

“En, that’s good. I’m sorry, but could you bring some?”

Although confused about Master’s sudden request, Shizuku still replied, “Understood,” and left for the kitchen.

Shizuku would have had no idea what we’re doing because she didn’t know anything about spirits. But, since it’s Shizuku, I might be able to tell her because she is trustworthy.

While I’m thinking about that, Shizuku came back. She really works fast, doesn’t she?

“Us this okay?”

“En, no problem. Take this cookie, Callus, and put some magic into it, just like you did with the “Marx’s Leaf” before.”

“Yes, Master. I understand.”

As Master instructed, I took one of the cookies and poured magic power into it.

I was thrilled that something might happen, but… nothing happened. Well, if you think about it, of course, nothing can happen just by passing magic power through cookies.

I thought so. However, there was one person who had a great reaction.

“Ca, Callus? Can I have that one?”

It was Serena.

She was looking at the cookie I held in my hand, while being extremely fidgety.

When I moved the cookie to the right, she also moved her gaze to the right. When I moved it up, she moved her gaze up. It’s kind of funny.

“Hey! Don’t tease me!”

“Ha-ha, sorry, sorry.”

I was about to hand the cookie to Serena, when Master grabbed my arm and stopped me.

“Callus, don’t forget what’s your purpose.”

“Yes.”

Indeed, this was the price for Serena’s cooperation. I almost gave it away for free.

“Food filled with magic power is a feast for spirits. Therefore, it is said that people in the past used to make offerings by placing food that was filled with their own magic power in front of the spirits’ Dwelling Stone. It is also said that the offering is only effective once a day, so be careful what you ask for.”

“I understand. I will be careful.”

I composed the words firmly in my mind before telling Serena. There was no room for error.

“I’ll give you this… but I want you to tell me how to find Kris. I also need you to help me find her.”

“Okay!”

She was quick to agree.

To think that a cookie would work so well.
