Volume 1: The Light

“I came before you because I thought it was about time you could see me. Before, you were still unstable and just learning magic, so you couldn’t see me as clearly as you do now. Now that you’ve stabilized, I’ve come out with full force.”

“I see. It is true that if I had seen you in a faint and illusory form instead, I would have ran away.”

“That’s what I mean. Most importantly, remember that Callus can only see me right now, as I am attached to you. As you grow, you’ll be to see other spirits, don’t go talking to them alright?”

“Uhh… oh, yes.”

To be honest, I’d like to see other spirits, but I’m afraid of Serena, so I just kept my mouth shut.

Master once said in his lessons, “Light Spirits are jealous beings.” It seems that’s true…

“The second reason is that I wanted to thank you. Thank you for the rich and tasty magic power you always give me.”

“Apart from the amount, quality also matters.”

“If one just have a lot of it, they will only attract the lowly spirits. But yours is different. There is no spirit that doesn’t want your magic power. It is rich, mellow, and smooth… Once one get’s a taste of it, one won’t be able to eat any other magic power!”

Serena entranced, as she was giving me a “detailed report” on my magic power.

Apparently, my magic power is just that good. It doesn’t really ring a bell, but I’m sure it’s a good thing.

“I don’t know if it’s rude to ask this, but is Serena a special spirit? You said something about lowly spirits earlier.”

“I’m special, you say? Of course, I am! Light Spirits are more special than other spirits. And I am even more special, I am a Princess. That’s why I was able to possess you, kicking all the other spirits out of the way!”

Serena puffed out her chest with a smug look on her face.

I don’t know what a spirit Princess is, but she’s probably a great existence. I wonder if if that has any effect on my magic.

“Is it okay if I tell other people about Serena?”

“I don’t mind, but I think it’s better if you don’t talk about it too much. There are very few people who can talk to spirits, and you might end up getting involved in something strange.”

“I guess I should consult this to Master.”

“By “master,” do you mean that gray-haired old man? He should be fine since he’s a Light Magician.”

Of course, it’s only natural for Serena to know about Master. It’s reassuring to have a spirit with you, but it makes me nervous to think that I’m being watched all the time. I wouldn’t care as much if she looked like an animal, but Serena is a beautiful girl.

“What other spirits are there? How did you come to me?”

Serena smiled happily.

“Hmmm, it’s nice of you to be interested in spirits. So I’ll make a special effort to teach you.”

“Yes!”

I was tired and was supposed to go to bed early that night, but an unexpected encounter led me to talk with Serena throughout the night.

I only realized my mistake when I noticed that it was getting bright outside.

“Oh no, I need to sleep!”

“Come to think of it, humans need their sleep. Well, good night, Callus. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

“Yeah, nice to meet you too, Serena.”

We cannot touch each other, but I’m sure I felt warmth in the handshake we just exchanged.
