Chapter 72: Making progress

"No need to worry little fella we won't off you just for being different." the admiral said after seeing Alex's reaction. "Perhaps if you were hostile towards people it may have been a different story , but as it stands you are little more than an oddity." the man said with a shrug. Alex visibly relaxed after hearing this though he did glare at Eliza a bit since it was clearly her doing that he was found out like this. The woman had thick skin however and just totally ignored the looks he was giving her while asking what they were going to do with Alex.

"Depends on him honestly , as a newborn of an unknown species we have no idea of how large he would become or any other abilities he may have. until we figure those out he gets to laze around while getting spoiled rotten." the admiral said with a chuckle and the fleet commander nodded in agreement. "We will be sending a report on this discovery to the guild however since this is an important discovery." the fleet commander said mostly to Alex who could only shrug. The little meeting ended after the fleet commander and admiral bombarded Alex with questions to answer.

Mostly things about what he could figure out about himself as well as what his future self may be like. A huge bonus as far as Alex was concerned was that he was allowed to leave the room and roam astera freely after this. He got a whole lot of looks from the inhabitants of the town but it was mostly curiosity about him than anything. Alex's favorite place to go in the town was the canteen however as the head chef took it as a personal challenge to figure out how to cook for alex's species.

Alex had managed to unlock the herbivore trait thanks to the chefs efforts and much to his surprise had the carnivore and herbivore traits fuse into the omnivore trait. this changed the teeth in alex's mouth from pure flesh tearing ones to a mix of flesh tearing and chomping teeth. an interesting thing that Alex had discovered in the past week since he had been given freedom was that his system didn't require him to consume some things to generate a trait for it. An example of this was how he got the heat resistance trait from visiting the smithy a single time.

For those thinking this was an unfairly easy thing to obtain for alex keep in mind that the massive forge was kept at near max temperature at all times and was open faced. entering the smithy for any real period of time was the same as standing on an active volcano , unbelievably hot. after being subjected to such heat it would have been weirder if Alex didn't unlock that trait. It wasn't all positives for Alex though as he discovered that in order to increase his size he actually needed to fully unlock ten different traits.

At the moment Alex alex had only completed half of that with five traits unlocked , specifically heat resistance , carnivore , herbivore , enhanced scales and water breathing. The enhanced scales trait had required him to eat fifty carpenter ants which was easy after he got free roam of astera. At level one the trait made his scales slightly thicker increasing his defenses by a small amount. for water breathing alex had need to consume ten different types of fish to unlock it and he sort of cheated by eating the various different types of bait fish that live near the docks.

This trait at level one was unique in that he could only choose one type of water to breath once it was unlocked. Living so close to the sea Alex had obviously chosen salt water as his first type of water to breath in. The other two traits he had in the works still needed more work to unlock as up till now he hadn't gotten any opportunity to eat more tuna for the swimmer muscles trait and had only fifteen overeatings out of the twenty five needed for the compact stomach trait.

After completing the water breathing trait Alex did generate another trait that he desperately needed in order to function underwater. this trait being [amphibious eyes] because as it turns out without eyes meant for it or special equipment you couldn't see worth shit underwater , who knew. jokes aside the requirement to unlock this trait was plain odd to Alex. in order to unlock it he needed to eat fifty pairs of eyes from either fish or frogs. not just any part of the creatures , no the requirement actually specified that it had to be the eyes. thanks to this and the fact Alex only generated it after eating a frog at the end of the week meant Alex hadn't made any progress on it yet.
