Chapter 12:

A Completely Normal Dinner

With the fiasco earlier now sorted, we found ourselves seated in a nice, quiet restaurant. High end with gold chandeliers and warm, dark wood tables and walls. Tapestries of many kinds hung up for decorations depicting varying scenes from around the world. Mostly of nature, and drawn in the Japanese style, Nihonga.

Seated in a private room for just the two of us by a server wearing clothing of Japanese style. Though this wasn't entirely a Japanese restaurant, it held themes of it. The food they served was varied and arrived in a timely manner. It was going extremely well, and the food was delicious.

Mid-way through our meal, a server came along to check on us.

"Is everything to your liking?" The man's eyes took us in, but lingered longer on my wife.

"...Y-Yeah," I responded with a kind smile, "But, could I get a refill?"

I had emptied my glass rather early, drinking because of nerves and thirst. This left me with nothing through most of my meal. His eyes seemed full of disdain as I spoke up, but changed when they fell back on my wife.

"Is everything to your liking, Ma'am," His words and tone changed, as if telling me he was only talking to her.

Cecelia eyed me, watching me closely as she calmly took a sip of her drink.

"No," She finally answered, "My husband requested a refill, so...why are you still here?"

The man tensed up, glancing over at me.

"Ah, your husband," His fake smile failed to hide his disappointment and disgust, "What a very lucky man."

"I am the one who is lucky," Cecelia responded, still remaining calm, "Now, if you don't mind..."

Grabbing my glass, she held it up to him. He took it with a cheery smile, but wasn't happy about it. As the door to the room slid closed, Cecelia let out a single sigh.

"Honestly," She frowned, "What poor manners..."

"I-It's fine," I reached across the table to take her hand, which was clenched around the cutlery, "I'm used to it...that's just how people are."

Her hand encompassed mine as she soothingly rubbed the back of my hand with her thumb.

"It's not how they should be," She responded firmly, "You shouldn't have to be used to it."

I smiled warmly, for her words meant everything to me.

"...Thank you," I was so incredibly happy at how she treated me, "Truly, your words are too kind."

"Oh, my love," Pain tinged her words as she lovingly stroked the back of my hand, "They are not kind enough. It is the bare minimum."

I didn't believe her, but I wanted to. So, I nodded, accepting that she felt that way. Silence fell upon us as we continued eating, waiting for my drink to return. After several minutes, my mouth was incredibly parched. Cecelia shared her drink with me, but I wondered where that server had gone.

"Dear," Cecelia called out to me, "I'm going to use the restroom. Wait here, alright?"

"That sounds like a good idea," I agreed, standing up as well, "I should use it as well."

"Of course," She smiled, and together we both left the room.

Water ran over my hands, washing away the soap. The hand dryer evaporated the water, instantly drying my hands. I had finished up my business and was now waiting for my wife. The bathrooms weren't too far apart, but she wasn't out here yet.

After a few minutes of waiting, I wondered if she was even still in the bathroom.

"Perhaps she returned?" I wasn't sure as she wouldn't just leave me alone, but perhaps she had finished before I did.

After several people walked by, giving me judging looks, I decided to head back. I couldn't handle the pressure and looks of everyone. Walking the hallways back to the room, I pulled up a screen before me to message her and let her know I was heading back.

Passing by the kitchen doors just as they opened. The movement caught my eye as I looked to find Cecelia, my wife, walking out from it. She looked surprised, but glad to see me.

"Alex!" She exclaimed, making her way to me, "I was just on my way back."

"...Back?" I caught a glimpse behind her as the doors swung shut, "What were you-"

The cold touch of a glass to my cheek brought my attention back to her. Startled, I took the glass from her sheepishly, smiling slightly.

"Thank you, but, uhm..." Looking at her I took in just how beautiful she was, shaking my head to clear my mind, I motioned to a spot on her cheek, "You, uh, have something...right there."

Her face flushed with embarrassment as she quickly searched for a handkerchief.

"Oh dear..." She flustered, blushing as she wiped away the blood, "I thought I got all of it this time..."

I laughed lightly, as I didn't think she could look so cute wiping away blood from her face. She was so embarrassed about it as she gave me a sidelong pout.

"Come on..." She said quietly, blushing "Let's go."

"Of course," I agreed, letting her lead me away.

It did not escape my notice the bodies behind the swinging doors to the kitchen, nor her personal guards arriving to clean things up. I simply chose to ignore it. With my wife holding my arm, looking quite shy as she did, I cared about nothing else.

"I saw such a cute side to her..." Looking up at Cecelia as we walked, I couldn't help but fall even more in love with her. Taking a sip of my drink, I smiled happily.
