Chapter 56:

Sadia's Past

Sadia was going to be staying with us, as it was imperative for her job. She had to protect me, and she couldn't do that if she lived somewhere else. As an attendant, it was necessary for her to live close. Since rooms were available, Cecelia let them choose their rooms. Rosa would whenever she arrived.

"Sadia," I asked, looking up from the book I was reading, "I never thought to ask before...considering what has been going on, but...where is Rosa currently?"

Looking up from her cup of coffee, she smiled tenderly in thought.

"Ah...Rosa," She said her name with such love that it brought a calm to my heart, "She's with my mother, currently. Though, I have to pick her up shortly. My mother...she's a bit of a stickler."

"Oh? How so?" I could kind of understand, "Does she not like watching her?"

"Oh no, she loves Rosa," Sadia set her cup down, looking away in thought, "It's just that she doesn't like my line of work. She thinks I should be spending more time with Rosa, and not bringing her into dangerous situations."

"I agree with her mother, but I think Sadia agrees as well," Watching Sadia, she had on an understanding yet sad smile. I could tell she loved her daughter very much, even if her father had been a piece of shit.

"I don't want my mother to worry," She explained, relaxing slight in her chair, "Did I ever tell you I was an orphan?"

Her confession hit me for a loop, as in our time together she had never said such a thing.

"N-No, never," Sitting up, I placed my book down, careful to mark the page, "Why are you telling me this now?"

"...I don't know," Sadia shrugged, taking a sip of her coffee, "I felt like you should know who is protecting you."

I felt touched at her willingness to share such personal things with me, despite it not being necessary. She explained that from a young age, she had been an orphan. She never knew her parents, and she never wanted to. That was until later in life, when she got pregnant with Rosa.

She grew up with memories of living in the streets, learning various skills to survive before she was picked up by an organization who trained child soldiers. She escaped that life when she was a teen when the organization was destroyed. She wandered around until she met Rosa's father.

Rosa's father was Sadia's handler. A man who took her in after the organization collapsed. He found her work, food, and a place to live. She fell in love with him, and was happy to hear she was pregnant with Rosa. Then, she found out just what kind of man he really was.

When he abandoned them, she found all his messages he had left in his hurry to escape the authorities. The bids he had going on her and their unborn child. She was mortified and left alone in the world. She had but a single thought, "Who abandons their child?"

Her thoughts turned towards her own parents. Why had they abandoned her? She searched them out in an effort to find meaning to her existence. She was angry at them abandoning her and blamed them for the life she lived.

She expected to find them living their best life, and in a way they were. Yet, not how she expected. They lived well enough, teetering on the edge between middle and lower class. When she found them, they were praying to a shrine...a shrine to her.

They thought she died as a child, but the truth was more horrible. She had been stolen from them at birth and told she had died. A branch office of the Genetica Corp were behind this abduction. She was experimented on until she was too old, then sold to the organization that trained child soldiers. The memories of her life on the streets were implanted to hide their misdeeds.

When she met with her parents, they were in disbelief at her survival, but took her in with open arms. It was easy to prove who she was, and for a time she lived happily with them until her father passed. They fell on hard times, and she fell back into the only ways she knew how to survive. Her mother tried to persuade her otherwise, but she didn't listen. For Sadia, it was the only way she knew.

After confronting her handler, she found out the truth of her origins and how she had been stolen. She threw herself into mercenary work to provide a better life for Rosa so that she never knew hardship, but it only ended up backfiring on her when she got into fights with her mother.

She was faced with the reality of her mother's concern after they kidnapped me. When she heard of how she barely escaped death, with everyone else she knew dead or captured, she instantly rethought everything.

"So, Alex," She concluded, smiling tenderly, "I have you to thank for that chance."

"Sadia..." I called her name sympathetically, "I-"

Holding up a hand, she simply shook her head.

"If you are going to apologize, or say you didn't do anything...don't," Taking her cup in her hands again, she stared into its confines, "I just want you to know that I'm grateful. Rosa deserves a better life."

"So do you," I found myself saying, my eyes watery, "Honestly...I don't know if I really did as you said, but I'm glad it worked out."

"Thank you, Alex," Smiling into her cup, she took another sip.

I was glad that Cecelia offered her this job. From now on, I hoped they'd have a better life. One they both deserved.
