Chapter 62:
Awkward Conversation
The four of us sat around the table in relative silence, but I could tell Padma was antsy. She kept looking back and forth between all of us, as if waiting for one of us to talk. Rosa sat awkwardly in her chair, trying to act distant. Alana sat quietly, playing with her hands anxiously.
"Well...this is awkward," I secretly hoped that Yuriko and Sadia would return soon. It was nerve-wracking being alone in the room with Padma and Rosa. I had no idea what to say, let alone if I should say anything.
"So..." Padma finally broke the silence, leaning forward to look at Alana, "Alana, dear...How old are you?"
"H-Huh? Ah, I'm uh...fourteen," Alana smiled respectively.
"Oh! You're the same age as Rosa," Padma motioned towards her granddaughter.
Looking over to Rosa, Alana smiled nervously in greeting. I watched as Rosa shifted nervously, giving a half-smile in return.
"H-Hey..." Rosa waved slightly.
"...Hi," Alana nodded, shifting around in her seat.
"Yep...definitely awkward," Before I could try and shift the mood, Padma spoke up again.
"So, Alana," Padma smiled, mischief in her eyes, "Are there any boys you like?"
"W-What!?" Alana exclaimed, startled by the question, "N-No...I don't really..."
Alana's eyes grew distant, and I knew I had to step in.
"Padma..." I cautioned, placing a comforting hand on Alana's shoulder, "Can we...not talk about that?"
Alana smiled thankfully over at me, and I couldn't help but understand, or at least I hope I did. She saw her mother with nothing but abusers. As for me...I guess I was the same, just in a different way.
"Oh, come now," Padma dismissed, waving her hand, "What girl doesn't want to talk about this stuff?"
I exchanged in that moment a look with not just Alana, but also Rosa who seemed to be of the same mind as me and Alana. "It is a bit uncomfortable to talk about..."
"I'm just saying," Padma continued, leaning her head on her palms, "Alana is a cute girl. She-"
"Mother," Sadia's voice called from the doorway, "You're making them uncomfortable."

"What? But I-" Padma looked towards me and Alana, her words caught as she noticed Alana.
With a hand over mine on her shoulder, Alana looked down sadly. She wore a dejected look upon her face, and it tore at my heart.
"...I'm sorry," Padma apologized, seemingly genuine, "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. Neither my daughter or Rosa will talk about their love lives with me...I guess I got excited."
Looking towards Sadia, my breath caught in my throat. Her hair was completely undone. Its dark, silken strands fell elegantly down her shoulders. Wearing casual clothing of just a t-shirt and jeans, it was different from her usual black turtle necks. It was refreshing, and I found myself staring for a bit too long.
"Alex!" Yuriko waved over Sadia's shoulder, "Yuriko's done!"
I wondered if I would be able to breath, as Yuriko took whatever breath I had recovered, away once more. She wore an oversized shirt, causing it to hang off one shoulder, and loose sweatpants. The shirt clung slightly to her still wet skin, accentuated her midsection. "...Damn."
I found myself blushing as she skipped her way over to me, draping her arms around me. Her damp hair fell against my face, the soft smell of flowers wafting in my nose. Padma raised an eyebrow, a curious expression on her face.
"Yuriko is your name?" Padma asked.
"Yep!" Yuriko exclaimed, hugging me tightly.
"And you're...his wife?" Padma motioned towards me.
I felt my cheeks burn up at the thought, my heart skipping several beats. "...Not yet." I thought, recalling the embarrassing moment so long ago when I had exclaimed such a thing in front of everyone.
"Nuhuh!" Yuriko shook her head, her damp hair hitting me lightly as she did, "My sister, Cecelia, is, but...One day Yuriko will!"
With that, she hugged me affectionately, nuzzling her head against mine. I could only smile dumbly, too embarrassed to say anything. The only thing I could do was watch as Alana gave me a rather amused, happy look.
"Is that so?" Padma contemplated for a moment, "I see, you're quite popular, Alex."
"A-Am I?" I found myself embarrassed, "Honestly...I'm still surprised."
Turning my head to look towards Yuriko, I was met with her happy smile.
"Still," I said softly, "I'm happy to have met Yuriko, as well as Cecelia. My life...it's never been the same since I met them, but I'd not change anything."
Yuriko seemed pleased with my words as she hugged me tightly, giggling.
