Chapter 92:
A Confession
The days wore on as Cecelia brought in a doctor for Sadia. She had a high fever and was going through a sort of cyberware overheat. There were also signs of overworking. "I knew it..." No matter how trained she was, there was always a limit.
I stayed by her side throughout. Even Cecelia insisted and said that she didn't mind as she gave a knowing smile. In that time, I realized that Sadia did have cyberware. The number of times I wiped the sweat from the back of her neck, I noticed implants that allowed her to plug chips into, as well as plug into the net physically, if necessary.
They were vital for soldiers. I berated myself for not realizing sooner. I had always just assumed that maybe she didn't, as the signs of cyberware weren't completely evident on her body. The truth was, she wasn't completely cybered up. Just implants that allowed her to do several things.
They allowed her to look at information up data chips, enhance her perception and reaction times, as well as upload training programs. This allowed her to practice in her mind.
I had always wondered how she trained, and that was how. Though, on the occasions that Rosa came to check up on her mother, she informed me that she also did a lot of physical training. Of that I was certain. No amount of mental training could get her body to look like it did.
I was both impressed, and worried. She worked herself hard, and the reason became clear as Rosa sat with me one day as she helped wipe her unconscious mother of sweat. Thankfully, it seemed like she was getting better, and would soon recover.
"...It's all for you," She said softly, "She wanted to repay you for warning us. I mean a lot to her, and she means a lot to me. I was wary at first, but...you're a good guy."
"Th-Thanks..." I smiled awkwardly, holding Sadia's head delicately as I wiped the back of her neck, "Still...she doesn't have to work so hard."
"In her mind, she does," Rosa explained, but she seemed to understand, "That's why I pray for her safety. When she cares about someone or something, she doesn't give it up. Ever."
"...This has happened before, hasn't it?" I asked, setting Sadia's head back down on the pillow.
"Mhm," Rosa confirmed, "A few times...the last time was shortly before Cecelia contacted her."
"Why did that happen?" I inquired, taking Sadia's arm out of her shirt to wipe it down.
"Mother was furious," Rosa told me, "Furious that she didn't press for more details on the job. Blamed herself. Angry that she put me at risk...and focused on finding a way to contact you."
"...I see," I felt a bit guilty, something Rosa seemed to notice.
"Don't do that," She chuckled, shaking her head, "It's not your fault. Cecelia got her your number. That's how she called you, though I'm sure you didn't know."
"...No, I didn't," I wasn't too shocked though, "She said she couldn't tell me, but I guess that Cecelia asked her not to."
"Yes...Cecelia said you'd be worried," Rosa smirked, "She's right. You would have been."
I couldn't argue with that. I would have thought Cecelia would hurt them, or had not listened to me when I asked her to leave them alone.
"I'm glad..." I said softly, "That she brought you here. Both of you. I'm sorry it's been so difficult up till now..."
"Oh, it hasn't been that bad," Rosa dismissed, "I had my mother, and she had me. We did well enough, but...Yeah, I'm glad as well."
Rosa looked at me with a smile I only ever saw on Alana before. A smile that said she cares and am glad that I'm around. It caused me to be quite nervous as a blush entered my cheeks.
"Heh, Alana is right...you're not so bad," Rosa helped to wipe away the sweat on her mother's chest and stomach, "I was worried, but you really do care about us...all of us."
"I mean, yeah," I told her, confused by the doubt I heard in her voice, "Sometimes, I don't know why I care about people. I just do, and for all of you...I'll be honest. I love you all."
"...Even my mother?" Rosa asked cautiously, helping me to put her into a clean shirt.
Before buttoning, Rosa went to wipe down her mother's chest, and so I averted my eyes. They had placed a sports bra on her so as to make it a bit easier to clean her and not have to fight with a normal bra every time, while still keeping her decency. The question she asked as I turned my head to not look caught me off-guard.
"I-I mean..." Scratching my cheek sheepishly, I couldn't help but smile, "Yeah..."
"Like me and Alana, or..." Rosa paused for a brief moment, "Like Cecelia and Scarlett?"
My heart thumped in my chest, and I only had one answer to give.
"...Yes," I found the word ring true to my heart, "To both. Yes. I think...I love her like you and Alana, but...also like Cecelia and Scarlett. So...yeah, but I don't know. She said something before, but I'm not sure if she meant it or..."
I trailed off as a silence fell over us. Anxiety began to set in as I panicked, worrying if I did or said anything wrong.
"She said something, huh?" Rosa finally asked, amused, "Please...do tell."
"W-Well..." Shifting nervously, I answered, "She said she...never thought she'd be taken care of by someone she loved like this...."
"She said that, huh?" Rosa seemed even more amused, "And you say you love her as well?"
"I...Yeah?" I said again, wondering why she had me repeat it, "I do. I love your mother, Rosa. Is that...alright with you? I know this whole situation is a bit strange, trust me...I know, but..."
"Heh, yeah. It's strange, considering I like Alana, but it's alright," She said with confidence, "So...you heard him. What do you think?"
She seemed to be talking to someone else, but there was no one else except us in here. "Well, except for...wait." I had wondered why she was taking longer than normal to wipe her mother down, and that's when it clicked. Turning, I saw Sadia sitting up, hiding her face in the covers of her bed, completely beet red. Immediately, I joined her in embarrassment as my heart decided to leave my body in that moment.

"Rosa!" I exclaimed, my face burning up, "Why didn't you tell me she was awake!"
"Hehe, you two were taking forever," She said, rolling her eyes, "Me and Alana were taking bets on how long it'd take, but we both agreed...you two needed to confront this. I saw my moment, and I took it."
Leaping up, she made her way towards the door.
"Well, my job here is done..." She smiled mischievously, "You two enjoy now!"
I could only watch, dumbfounded as she left the room. I was too embarrassed to meet Sadia's eyes, and so I could only look at the floor.
"S-So...feeling better?" I asked nervously.
"...Y-Yeah," She responded, just as nervously, "So...you've been by my side this entire time?"
"Mhm..." I nodded sheepishly, "I wanted to make sure you were alright..."
"Th-Thank you..." She whispered, "D-Did I really say that? Early...you said that I said I-I..."
She was too embarrassed to say anymore.
"Yeah...you did," I told her, shifting in my chair, "Is what you said...true?"
Silence met my words. I was too afraid to break it, and so I only waited.
"C-Can we...go out on the balcony?" She asked softly, "I don't want to talk in here..."
"S-Sure..." Turning towards her, I offered my arm.
Becoming shy, she took it gently as I helped her up. We made our way stiffly out to the balcony. Both of us a flustered mess. The cool air hitting us as we made our way outside. Sadia shivered at the breeze, and I realized that I didn't think before I escorted her outside.
"Hold on!" I exclaimed, rushing back in as I left her leaning against the balcony.
Quickly, I grabbed an extra blanket and made my way back to her. Unfolding it, I tossed it around her and made sure she was wrapped up.
"There...much better," I smiled apologetically, "We don't need you catching another fever..."
"I'm sorry..." She said, looking glumly away, "I didn't want to worry you..."
"Don't be sorry. It's natural to worry about those you care about," I told her, leaning next to her on the railing, "I'm just glad you're alright. Please...don't overdo it. If anything happens to you...I..."
My words trailed off as I didn't want to think of what if's. The feeling of a warm blanket wrapped around me as I found myself pulled into Sadia's embrace. With one arm around me, I blushed and looked up at her. The demure look she gave, with the light blush to her cheeks caused my heart to skip several beats.
"I-It looked a bit cold," She told me softly, "And this blanket is big enough for the both of us...Don't need you getting a cold either."
"I-I suppose not..." I muttered, pulling the blanket closed around us.
As close as I was to her, I couldn't help but feel her against me. Becoming incredibly self-conscious, I shifted nervously to try and give her some space.
"It's alright..." She whispered, pulling me closer to her, "You don't need to..."
"A-Are you sure?" I asked, glancing away nervously.
"Yes," Her words were a bit more confident as I felt her arm tighten around me, it was nice knowing her strength was returning, "I meant what I said...even if I was delirious, and my daughter's right. I can't keep avoiding this. Even Cecelia kept trying to push me..."
"I'm sorry about her..." I felt guilty as I frowned, "I asked her not to interfere, and I-"
"Alex," Sadia interrupted me as I felt her blanketed hand under my chin, "Shut up."
"O-Okay..." Flustered by her sudden directness, her hand lifted me to look at her.
"Let me do this properly," She said as she took a breath; I never seen her emerald eyes appear so clear, "This situation...it's new, but Alex...I love you."
"I...I love you too," I found the words drawn from my lips as she pulled me up to hers.
The sweetness of it all was only enhanced by the blanket wrapped around us. Its warmth comforting and inviting. As if, in this moment, we were the only two people that existed. Held together by this one piece of fabric, the outside world didn't exist for those few, tantalizing moments.
