Chapter 1: Author’s Note

This story will adhere to the Chinese name style, so all names will be surname first, then the given name. Also, if there is any relation, they will call each other by that relation rather than their actual names. This is a custom still done in China today, so for this story, I will be following it. Only if people are really close or family will they just call a person by their given name.

There are certain nicknames used throughout Daiyu's Ascent. Xiao before the surname is a usage for affection between friends or close relations. Ah refers to a younger female friend of a man. Repeating a person's name, as you will see with the titular character's brother (Tang Bao is called Baobao) is also an affectionate naming custom used by family for young children. The additive of 'er is also used as a childhood nickname (Rong'er for Feng Rong).

Also, since this story does involve martial arts, it isn't like the competitive fighting in American representations, rather the mystical, gravity-defying stunts in Chinese representations as this is technically a wuxia novel, rather than historical fiction.

I also took creative liberties and replaced the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties with the kingdoms of Chang and Heping for this story.
