Chapter 44: Chapter 43 – Hangout

Rio and I met up with Taku and Ayaka who were talking to each other. 

“Heyo, Taku, Ayaka! 

“Hey.” 

“Hello.” 

“Hey.” 

“What’re you guys up to?” Rio asked 

“Nothing much. We were about to train a little but that’s it.” Taku responded 

“Then!?-” 

“Then?’ 

… 

Rio nudged my arm with his elbow. 

“Oh, I thought you were going to do it.” I said to him. 

“I’m a little nervous...” 

“Why?” 

“I’ve never asked someone other than you before...” 

“Then you should do it?” 

“What if I mess up my words?” 

“You know... They can hear every word you’re saying right now...” 

“Huh!?” 

Sometimes I wonder about you... 

 “Um? What do you want to ask?” Ayaka cut in with a confused tone. 

I looked at Rio. 

“Um... Would you two like to get ithe crtheme with us?” 

He bit his tongue... 

“Hahaha!” Ayaka suddenly started to laugh. 

Taku and I both let out a little chuckle subconsciously. 

“Leo! I messed up!” 

“Eh! Why are you all laughing at me!” 

“No-we’re no-haha!” Ayaka couldn’t stop herself. 

“Ithe crtheme!” Ayaka repeated before laughing again. 

“Its not that funny!” 

“You’re right... It’s not funny.” Ayaka stopped laughing. 

… 

“It’s hilarious!” Ayaka started to laugh again. 

Rio just looked defeated and Taku slightly chuckled. 

A few minutes later, Ayaka had finally finished laughing. 

She probably had a lot on her mind considering she laughed that much. 

“But yeah, what’d you ask? Ith-Ice cream?” Ayaka stuttered at the end of her sentence. 

Hm... 

“Did you just say ‘ithe’?” I asked. 

“No... What’re you talking about?” 

“Hm? Are you sure? I could’ve sworn I just heard ‘Ithe’ come from your mouth.” 

Ayaka’s eyes looked to the side. 

“Hah! You said ‘Ithe’!” Rio immediately jumped on the conversation. 

“No! I would never!” 

“Yeah, you did!” 

They kept going back and forth, so I talked to Taku instead. 

“But yeah, did you two want to get ithe cream with us?” 

“Haha, sure. We’d love too.” 

Afterwards we all walked around the campus a little, but we couldn’t find Kathryn, Ian, or Kazu so we went there on our own.

“Chocolate please!” Rio ordered.

“Here you go! Thank you for your purchase!” The shopkeeper spoke before continuing, 

“What can I get you?” 

“I’ll have chocolate as well.” I ordered. 

“Coming right up!” 

“Thank you for your purchase!” 

I took the ice cream and headed to where everyone was sitting. 

“Thank you for paying for us, Ayaka.” I thanked her as I sat down. 

“Yeah! Thank you!” Rio agreed 

Ayaka perked up head up like she was high and mighty. I mean technically she was; she was a duke's daughter after all. 

“Actually, I take my thanks back.” I spoke. 

“Eh? Huh!? Why?!” Ayaka looked at me. 

I let out a little chuckle. 

It’s pretty fun to mess with her. 

“It’s really good!” 

Rio was eating his ice cream at a fast rate. 

“So, are you two good?” I asked while eating. 

“Hm? What do you mean?” Ayaka asked while eating her vanilla ice cream. 

“Eh, nothing, never mind.” 

I mean, yeah, they were probably fine. When Kazu said ‘everyone’ he probably didn’t actually mean everyone.  

“Huh?? Tell me!” She was poking at my shoulder. 

“This is pretty good.” I looked at the ice cream. 

“Don’t ignore me!” 

“Ah! My brain hurts!” Rio put his hands on his head. 

“Hey Leo, could I talk to you?” Taku asked. 

“Hm? Sure.” 

Taku and I headed a little away from the table. 

“Did you offer ice cream because you were worried about us?” 

“Hm? I was worried about Rio, then I heard from Kazu that you two also might be worried. So, I guess?” 

“Well, thank you.” He bowed 

“Sure?” 

I’ve learned that it's better to just accept the thanks and move on. 

“To be honest, we didn’t really know how to thank you for distracting the Ogre.” 

Haah, can’t we move on from this Ogre stuff? Everyone and their mother have already thanked me for it. I didn’t even do it for anyone except Rio in the first place.  

“Then don’t?” 

“Huh?” 

“I didn’t do it for anyone except for Rio. I don’t need any thanks.” I continued, 

“Plus, I heard you and Ayaka were trying to come help anyway, I appreciate the thought.” 

It looked like Taku understood, 

“Alright, thank you anyway.” 

“Sure, sure. I think my ice cream is melting, so let's head back.” 

Taku nodded his head. 

When I got back to the table my mouth opened wide. I was shellshocked. 

Taku sat back down in his seat. 

I looked at Ayaka who had just finished eating my ice cream. 

“M-H-W-Wh-” 

I couldn’t get any words out. 

“Thanks for the ice cream!” Ayaka stuck her chocolate-covered tongue out and put her finger on her cheek in a mocking way 

“I tried to stop her Leo!” Rio said as he was eating another bowl of ice cream. 

You were bribed...  

I looked down in defeat. 

Well, the mood was quite enjoyable even if I didn’t have my ice cream. These days aren’t so bad.
