Her ass felt hot and soft against his forearm, but he wasn’t going to complain.
Everything had happened so fast. He’d only just secured the bomb on one of the submarine’s outer walls when she’d come bursting through the doors, red-faced and sweaty, and telling him to hurry up.
And then they’d been climbing out of the sub; him climbing up beneath her. By the time they’d gotten out into the winter air, she looked ready to drop. So he’d done the only logical thing he could think of: hoist her up in his arms and jump onto the beach.
Except for that yelp when he grabbed her, she hadn’t made a sound in his arms as he walked away from the docks. Instead, she rested her head against his chest as she prodded her watch.
“So what’s going to happen?” As if to answer his question, the sky lit up behind them, but he didn’t turn back to see. He thought it would be cooler if he just kept walking, and he made his way to his car because he didn’t see her assistant and couldn’t think of any other place to go.
She knocked on his chest. “You can set me down now.”
“Not until you explain what’s going on.” He almost expected her to slap him. But her silence caught him off guard. This could be his chance. He sat her on the hood of his car. She shook herself off and looked up at him expectantly.
“Well?” She looked utterly beautiful. Lucas wasn’t sure if that was the adrenaline pumping through his blood or the way her cheeks seemed to radiate.
He almost leaned down and kissed her. “Your father wants a partner in New York. And that partner is me.” He slammed his hands on her either side, bringing his face to hers, just as she had the night before. “I need to know what all of that was about.” The notebook in his back pocket, the ring on her finger, the blown up submarine and its dead inhabitant. What had it all been for?
She exhaled, sending a cloud of the citrus wine into his face. “Why don’t you force it out of me, big boy?”
Was she flirting with him? Lucas swallowed, feeling his heart racing. This is the first time he’d been this close to a woman that he hasn’t paid in years.
As he licked his lips, she grabbed him by the jacket and thrust her mouth against his. She tasted like the wine, horrible and tangy, but she felt so hot and wet against him, Lucas found himself bringing up his arms and wrapping them around her smaller frame. He kissed her back as her hands outlined the shape of his chest.
Then Elsa pulled away, and the heat throbbed on his face before dissipating into the cold air. He looked at her, wanting her, unable to take his hands off her, until she dangled her hand in front of his face. She held his phone.
“So who was it that almost got us killed?” she asked, licking her lips and placing the phone in his hands. “You married or something?”
Lucas swallowed, unlocking the phone. “You should already have that information.” He swiped to the notification and was about to turn away when she grabbed his coat again. His heart skipped a beat, and he thought she might kiss him again. He hoped.
“Reading a file is no fun.” She spread her knees. “Will you take me home? I don’t want to call Lin, and I’ll tell you whatever you want.”
He blinked, unable to hold her gaze, and dug the keys out of his pocket and tossed them on her lap. “Get inside and warm it up. I need a few minutes.”
She nodded, picked up the jingle in her fingers, and was in the car before he’d hit dial.
“Hello?” A small voice spoke on his phone.
Lucas wiped his mouth, still swirling Elsa’s taste around with his tongue. “Allison, is everything alright?”
She coughed. “Yes, daddy. I just woke up, and you were gone.”

“Do you remember daddy’s new business plan?”
“Mm-hmm.”
He glanced back at Elsa. She was toying with the dashboard. “I’m sorry for worrying you, sweetie. I’ll be home soon, okay? Just go back to bed for me.”
“Alright, dad. If I fall asleep, wake me up when you get back, okay?” There was movement on her end, and he whispered his love and good night before hanging up. Then he climbed into his car, pointing at the passenger side as Elsa made a face before moving into that seat.
Lucas turned the key and shut the engine off. “Talk.”
She stretched, her fingers stroking his face. Then she unbuttoned her coat, slipping it off to reveal the rolled up parchment. “Would you like to see me naked?”
He glanced at her outfit. He could see the pale skin of her belly, her thighs, and wondered how far Mr. Bovver had gotten his hands up her coat.
When he didn’t respond, she smiled. “I meant the painting.”
Lucas took a deep breath and started the car. “I need to get to my daughter.” He didn’t have time for mind games right now. And whatever she was up to, it wasn’t going to end well for either of them tonight.
“We make a good team, leatherman.” She placed an arm on his shoulder and massaged his arms through the jacket.
“I think you’re a bit too hot, Mrs. Chung.” He took a deep breath, turned right, and entered the city. Cars swarmed around them, and in the distance, he could hear sirens hunting down the explosion they’d left behind. “Where do you want me to drop you?” There was something off about her… was she drunk? Where was the cold and calculating woman he’d met?
She sighed and punched him softly. “You’re no fun. Just take me to my café. I need a drink.”
“Coffee?” he asked, trying not to make a face. It’s worse than that wine. “At this time of night?”
She waved her hand. “It’s always a good time for coffee, Mr. Kramer.”
He winced at the name. “Please, call me Lucas.” After all, they’d been through, surely they could drop some degree of formality? After that kiss? The way she was dressed in his car?
“Kramer,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ll call you Kramer you oversized hunk of…” Her voice trailed off and she pressed her face against the glass. “I think Bovver slipped something into my drink.”
He almost hit the brakes. “What?”
She yawned and murmured something he couldn’t understand.
“Mrs. Chung,” he said, shaking her arm. She felt hot, abnormally hot to touch. “Fuck. Elsa.” He pulled over. Cars whizzed passed them, honking and swearing. Picking her coat off her lap, and trying not to glance downwards, he spread it on top of her.
Then he signaled and pulled back into the lane. “I’m taking you to my place.”
