The Eastern Kingdom was thus captured by the Empire. They lost their queen and surrendered unconditionally, so the Empire deposed her and made them a full vassal state. All the gold and silver obtained from Narande was more than the reparations received from the entire Southern Kingdom.

The Imperial Army cheered and proudly returned to the Empire.

But Victor Morte was not relieved at all.

His nightmares did not end, and putting him to sleep was now a war.

He was in so much pain that he sought sleeping pills, magic, and even tried to slash himself with a sword. Nothing hurt him.

The Grand Duke was disappointed.

The queen made him unable to kill himself.

‘So, who can do it?’

‘Who can put me to sleep and put an end to this pain?’

‘The strongest knight on the continent? Who?’

***

He couldn’t remember what happened after that. The reason he was able to return to the Empire without falling off his horse was purely because of his strength and the curse of the queen. Well, not exactly the curse of the queen.

No one approached the knight with a terrifying demeanor. Even the Emperor dismissed him after a few short words.

Victor refused all banquets and locked himself up in his Capital mansion. The only reason he did was due to Diederick and Sumona’s insistence. They didn’t want him sleeping in the training ground outside the Capital. They said they couldn’t let their master suffer in shabby lodgings, and that they themselves would help with treatment.

Victor simply nodded his head. He was too tired to stop them.

In this way, his mansion was transformed into a battlefield. During the day, his knights met with renowned doctors and therapists, and at night, they guarded the halls.

Horrible rumors began to circulate in the Capital.

That the Grand Duke of Morte was crazy and had to be locked up, or that the Knights of Morte would revolt.

They were only rumors, but frightened nobles cut off communication with Morte. Even Nanael Welch, his fiancée, dared not come to visit him.

The mansion, where the traces of Mortheon remained, was increasingly desolate.

The Grand Duke felt like everything was his fault.

His people suffered, the war continued, and countless people died.

Morte was stained with blood, his mother died, his father left, and the funerals of his older brother and colleagues couldn’t be properly performed.

He couldn’t sleep, and his aching head wouldn’t stop thinking.

An old melancholy ate at his body.

Then, one day, his knights brought news.

“Today a man from the Welch Duchy visited. He asked what you were going to do about your engagement.”

“If I were him, I wouldn’t think of pushing his daughter into my bedroom.”

The Grand Duke replied grimly. Leonard nodded his head.

“We also explained the situation and offered to pay… but it was useless. They don’t want to miss out on an opportunity like this.”

“Are they okay if her groom is crazy? I’m crazy.”

Leonard was silent. Next to him, Carlz opened his mouth with a stern tone.

“Well, they are out of their minds. There’s even a rumor in the Capital that his highness brings knights into the mansion every night to… entertain him.”

“What?”

“This is why I don’t understand etiquette. How absurd is it that you can’t enter a bedroom unless you’re a wife?”

Carlz complained.

The Grand Duke zoned out for a moment. Normally, he would have been furious that such insulting rumors were circulating, but his exhausted body had other thoughts.

‘Wife.’

The seat of the Grand Duchess, which the Duke of Welch longed for. A woman who could reach him both at night and during the day without scandal. There was no healer who could cure him, nor a wizard… but a knight?

At the same time, the story he heard on the battlefield flashed through his mind.

Rumors about the most powerful knight in the kingdom.

The Grand Duke said abruptly.

“Bring her.”

“Who?”

“The strongest knight in the kingdom, as Jane said. If it’s her, she could watch me at night and end this Welch nonsense.”

The knights exchanged bewildered glances.

“Do you believe the rumors? Didn’t Jane say that it was just a tall tale?”

“And I wonder if his highness would be able to handle such a long trip…”

The Grand Duke did not answer and looked out the window.

Frankly, he had almost given up on treatment.

Neither medicine nor poison worked, and magic was out of the question.

Besides, Victor was painfully strong.

Slowly, the knights who guarded him were getting more and more serious injuries.

His wife had to be someone stronger than him who could overpower him without getting hurt.

However, the Grand Duke had never met anyone stronger than him.

So he didn’t expect much, but if she was strong enough, she could defeat him or even kill him if she couldn’t calm him down.

Victor decided to hang on for a little longer.

The knights eventually fulfilled their master’s orders, and planned a journey to the kingdom. The Knights of Morte quietly left the Capital and headed north.

The whole time, Victor was locked in his carriage like a prisoner.

When they arrived in the North after travelling for several weeks, the king thankfully knew who they were referring to.

The northern maiden brought before them spoke politely.

“I am Amarion of Amari, your highness.”

She looked really strong.

She had the eyes of a warrior who had seen many battles.

At that moment, Victor knew.

If this woman could really defeat him, he would give her all the riches he had. When he died, he would hand over his position to her, but in the meantime, he would make her the greatest lady in the Empire.

The Grand Duke made an offer, and the lady accepted it.

After returning from their long journey, Victor locked the gates and set up knights in the garden.

“If she screams, come to save her. But don’t save her otherwise. Even if she’s hurt.”

He lay down in bed.

‘Now really, I’m looking forward to the end.’

And the next day.

“…you’re alive.”

The Grand Duke had made it to dawn.

“Did you want me to be dead?”

Victor saw a white silhouette crouching under the window.

A face that tried not to look at him, long platinum hair, slender arms, and a tired expression.

Still, her hand gripped her sword.

The Grand Duke stared at her in wonder.

“No, it’s just… I’m surprised.”

Suddenly, his whole world was turned upside down. Victor was able to imagine a future, something he hadn’t been able to do for a very long time.

The longer he spent with her, the stranger he felt.

He had never met such a unique person in his life.

She was strong enough to be his equal.

She was a great knight willing to devote every night to the sick.

All his instincts were overrun, and the Grand Duke clung to her like a child.

His only thought was that he could not lose her.

It was crazy, but he didn’t mind.

Whether it was strength, power, gold coins, or his body.

He was willing to give it all to her.

As long as he could keep her precious, safe, and alive, by his side.

He was determined to do something he’d never been able to do before.

So Victor completely disguised himself.

He tried not to scare her, acted like a gentleman, and hid his true nature.

At the same time, he wrapped her surroundings with fluffy things, like cotton blankets.

Safely, without going anywhere, he wanted her to see and hear only good things.

He locked her door so no one could steal her from him.

He was clumsy and failed a few times, but in the end, everything worked out.

Early in the morning, Victor kissed his wife’s forehead and swore.

‘I will protect you with all of my life. My savior, my one and only family reborn.’

‘The only one who can bring me life and death.’

“…Marion.”

‘You, only you, no one else…’

Morte’s summer was at its peak. The morning sun poured in through her window.

Amarion rubbed her eyes and got out of bed. As always, the place next to her was empty. When she rang the bell, her maids quickly came in with honey tea and a water basin.

As she drank her honey tea, she asked.

“Where is he?”

“His highness just finished eating and went into his office.”

“Okay, thank you.”

The maids stared at her.

She pretended not to notice as she washed her face with cool water from the basin.

Two weeks had passed since the beginning of her strange cold war with Victor.

She had been avoiding him ever since the executions, and he didn’t bother looking for her.

She was still confused. Victor, who was always kind and friendly, was, in fact, cruel enough to send people to the gallows without hesitation.

The illusions that she had built up about him in her mind collapsed. All that was left was distress and emptiness.

She ate a mushroom pie topped with cream in a sour mood. After she finished eating, Mary asked cautiously.

“Madame, the vassals are waiting again today, saying they want to see you. Would you like to?”

She sighed.

After the executions were canceled, several vassals came to see her every day.

They wanted to thank her.

But she sent them back time and time again.

She saved them because it was her duty as a knight. She didn’t want to be thanked for that.

Besides, there were the people who had spread vicious rumors not too long ago.

So she said the same thing today.

“Tell them to go back.”

“Yes, madame.”

Mary bowed her head and left the room.
