Year 19xx
Death
I stand in the shadows, as usual. The sound of soft sobs fill the air. I watch the familiar scene before me. A dying human on a hospital bed. Other humans surrounding the bed in tears. “Loved ones” they are called. Loved ones who grieve and are sad the human they love are departing this world, Father had told us. Hmm. I curl my lips sardonically. I have also seen death which caused other human happiness.
Love.. what a stupid concept. I glance at the human male on the bed. I take out my pocket watch and open it.
3 more minutes and his time is up. He will have to follow me back to Judgement. If he is worthy, he will go to my brother, Life for rebirth. If he is not, it would be time for him to repay his sins. Beside his bed are two other humans, a human female and a male child. Maybe in the eyes of humans, he would be considered that term, teenager.
All humans are children to me. As an immortal being, the concept of ageing has no interest to me. Every human will die, some even at infancy.
“Master.” I turn to see Nat appearing beside me. Nat is a lower angel who has been working for me for a long time now by helping me to collect souls. “I have finished the list you gave. I can wait for this human on your behalf.”
“It is fine.” I answer quietly. “I am already here. He only has 2 minutes left. Head back to Judgement to prepare for human’s arrival. I will be there shortly.”
Nat nods right away, accepting my orders before disappearing.
I cross my arms and sigh in boredom, knowing the humans can’t hear me.
However, to my surprise, the child flicks his gaze in my direction and his eyes meet mine, widening immediately.
This child.. He can see me. This has never happened before. How strange.
The child is about to say something but at the moment, the human male on the bed starts gasping. The child’s attention is back to him as the female starts crying louder. It is time.
The clock hits and the human male’s life is now mine. I watch as his eyes flutter to a close and his heart stops beating.
The other two humans start crying, even the child. He seems to have been completely distracted from my presence. I watch the tears roll down the pale cheeks of the human child. I have seen many humans cry. But this child, why do his tears look different?
Before I can dwell on it, a soul appears before me. It is the human male. He takes a look at the humans crying by the bed regretfully before turning to face me.
“You’re here to take me.”
I nod. “I am Death.” My name will explain it all.
The human male seems to accept his fate easily as he nods sadly. Sometimes they don’t. They would cry, beg or try to run. It never works.
“Can I just look at them for just a little more? My precious wife and son.” The human male makes one request.
However, I don’t give in to requests from humans. When it is time, it is time. “No. It is time.” With those words, I snap my fingers and he disappears. I sent him to Judgement, where I knew Nat would receive him.
I take one last glance at the two crying humans, my gaze lingering a little more on the male. One of my abilities is that when I look at humans, I am able to see everything about them. Their identities, which do not interest me, what they have done and also, their time left. Hm. His time will be up soon too. In concept of time, just 5 more years and he will die saving another. This child… has barely committed any sins too.

I guess I am just a little more interested since he could lay his eyes on me earlier. However, that is the extent of my interest. I have more important things to do. I turn on my heel and exit the room by the door as doctors rush past me. I could just disappear but somehow, I fancy a little walk.
As I walk out the hallway, a soft voice behind me gets me stopping in my tracks. “Wait.”
I turn slowly to see the male human standing behind me. His height barely reaches my chin. His large eyes, nose and cheeks are red from crying. He is staring at me with a gaze mixed with wariness and sadness. This is really interesting. A human seeing me for the very first time since I was created by Father. I wonder why he is able to see me.
“You’re not human.” He states the obvious. “Who are you?”
“I am Death.” I do not bother to hide the truth. The human gets even more interesting. He is not running from me.
Instead, the human gulps softly. “And you took my father.” He is accepting this rather well.
“His time in this world is up.” While this human is interesting, I am done with this conversation. I still have to process that human earlier and collect other souls. I am about to disappear when the human male does not something unexpected.
He reaches out to grab my hand. I stare in disbelief at the warm fingers touching my skin. He can touch me too.
“Please. I am not asking you to bring him back but can I see him one last time? My father was my hero…” He starts pleading with me, more tears forming in his eyes.
His tears… I do not like the sight of them. I should also pull my hand away but seeing his tears, I can’t seem to.
“That will be impossible. His time is up.” I do give an answer to his plea.
I expect the human to plead more or wail. He surprises me again by simply nodding his head. “I understand it. Could you help to pass a message then, please? Just a short one. Please.” He even gives my hand a little squeeze.
Like I said, I do not give in to requests from humans. Staring into those brown and teary eyes, something in me… shifts. For the very first time, I actually nod. “A short message.”
The human actually gives me a very tiny smile as he sniffles. “Thank you. Tell him, I love him and I will take care and protect Mama.”
“I will pass it on. Now, will you let me go?” I glance down at our entwined hands.
The human seems to realise what he has done for he quickly lets me go and steps back. “I am sorry.”
Now, I really need to leave but before I can do so, the human asks again. “Why can I see you? Other humans are not able to, right?”
I stare at him. “I do not know.” It is a question I wonder too.
“Will I see you again?” He asks softly.
Now, I really do find this human too interesting and strange. My lips actually curl. “No one ever wants to meet me. Because when they do, it means their time is up.”
I thought my words would scare him off. Instead, he wipes his tears away and smiles a little wider. “You’re just doing your job, aren’t you? And I think you’re interesting and it would be nice to see you again. Even if it means possibly my time is up.” I can sense his sincerity. He is not lying to me.
This human is too fascinating. The first human I have talked to. So I find myself saying softly, “I need to go but I will see you again. Even if perhaps it is not your time yet. Goodbye, Niran.”
That is his name. Niran. Eternal. Once again, for the first time ever, I bother to look at a human’s name.
With that promise, I disappear. Not before I catch a glimpse of his small smile.
