Chapter 10: Demon

He was lunging towards the woman, rescutter in hand. My reaction was too little too late. By the time he sliced her throat my lightsaber would only just be igniting. There was no way. I wasn’t going to make it. Time seemed to slow down around me as I watched her helplessly. Then it occurred to me; why did I care?

This woman was someone that I’d just met, and we had had no connection. Her dying would even be better for me in the long run. After all, she was nominally a member of the cult that the mirror man wanted me to wipe out. If she died here, well too bad so sad, one less for me to deal with. With that realization, my racing thoughts calmed, and my speeding heart slowed.

“Well, this is interesting, isn’t it?”

A voice echoed in my head.

My eyes shut for a moment. When they opened, the man stood before me, and my ignited lightsaber was through his chest. He coughed painfully and his blood splattered my face, causing me to take a step back in disgust. I tripped over something and turned my head to see the woman sprawled out on the floor, looking around in a daze but otherwise without injury.
