Hide breathed in the chilled autumn breeze as it lightly blew into his face. The scent of damp and concrete had fully settled within him as a familiar blanket.
His gaze landed upon his final destination of the day. A towering tenement, identical to the ten other grey buildings that surrounded it.
He walked from the subway station to that worm-eaten apartment complex door.
He wondered how many complaints were sent in about that door. It caused the heat to escape and was considered a safety hazard, but he knew nothing would be done about it.
Why waste cash on something so insignificant?
Also, the property owners were dick heads. He could not say that to their faces, however, without risking his friend's guest pass on him
His gaze turned to the apathetic check-in clerk who sat at her desk. Eyes glued to a tasteless tabloid on probably some conspiracy theory of lizard men. Her features were worn and weary, through the years of whatever low-income job she had done prior. She was not much a pretty thing; plain face, eye bags, and makeup sloppily caked on.
Gross, why do girls bother with makeup if they can't even put that shit on decently?
Looks like a nasty ass clown
Hide was also not a flat chest fanatic, so her tits definitely did not make up for that shitty eye shadow job. At least she knew to mind her business, unlike the last girl.
Hide smiled at the memory of said girl's firing.
Bitch, not minding her own damn business about his hair or his style. At least he had style compared to that dumb cow.
The girl gave him an annoyed glance but said no more than a basic acknowledgement and her eyes went back to the tabloid.
She had one thing, though, a superb punch. Hide shivered with pleasure at the memory.

Too bad she was so not his type. Then he would be more than thrilled to turn on his charm for a good night.
The elevator of the 4th floor led to a long hallway with tacky, yellowing and peeling wallpaper. He ignored the doors of the crying children, the shouting couples, and the roars of overtly loud televisions until he came to that lone familiar door.
Room 707.
To be more annoying, he knocked as hard as possible on the slab of wood as if it owed him money. No one would care about the noise hence he did not stop until the door swung open to reveal a woman only a few inches taller than himself.
Her purple eyes were tired, and upon her head was a messy collection of tangled black, curly locks. Her body was the equivalent of a stick in an oversized nightshirt. Said body she supported via a cane on the same side of her body as the visible leg brace. On her feet were a pair of simple white socks in fluffy slippers.
She held that familiar inexpressive gaze that Hide could tell, bared a hint of annoyance.
“You don't have to knock like that,” she said.
Hide smiled, “I know, bitch. But you weren't answering my calls, so I knew you were either passed out or asleep."
"... Just get inside."
She could have looked a little happier to see him, but he did not mind.
