It was an eerie silence.

Kai was sitting over a rock, holding a stick in his hand. The earth under his feet was covered in many strange diagrams, faces, lore, and legends. Shae was standing far from Kai’s reach. Every time Kai looked up, he found her backing away just by little.

Simon was there too.

One time he looked up, then he looked around. Most of the time, he looked at Kai. His one eye had never left Kai alone, though Kai did not know what tales it was trying to tell.

The wind picked up Kai’s hair, and he brushed them behind his ears. They were mud. His hands, legs, hair, and face all were stained with brown hardened mud. Now that none were trying to kill him, he could feel the mud in his mouth too. The cut at the tip of his tongue had healed long ago.

Kai looked up. Shae took another step back. Simon’s eye peered at the drawings Kai was making on the earth.

Arlen was the one who had been keeping them all glued. But he was gone. Along with the whispers and invitation, the Captain of Guard left behind a silence. This silence was someone’s strength and someone’s weakness. It crept over them as they seated or stood amid nowhere, surrounded by nothing but wind and grass and rocks.

This silence was indeed eerie, and it meant to break the three Contestants’ spirits one by one. Shae was the first to crumble. She ran for the broom, saying nothing. Kai stood up, and gawked at her, the corners of his mouth arching up in an evil smile.

Run!

Run, bitch! Run! The silence screamed behind her. It must have scared her. It scared her such that Shae didn’t even look back once as she disappeared into the horizon, her broom flying at a speed it never knew it possibly had.

And then there were two.

A bird cried over their head, but the silence had returned to its task. It went for its next target. Simon! It crawled, slithered, and put strength in its haunches before lunging at him.

Simon smiled. It took only that for the silence to piss itself and vanish.

“Arlen is right,” Simon said, blinking at Kai. “It would be wise for you to join an organization.”

Kai sat back, facing Simon this time.

He isn’t afraid, Kai thought. Not at all. What is the source of his confidence?!

“I am used to working alone,” Kai replied, shaking his head. “My way of doing things isn’t suited for big organizations.” Kai knew better than giving out his thoughts. Even if he had thought of seeking an organization, he couldn’t find any reason to share that with Simon. The man creeped him out, and that said something in itself when it was Kai at the other end.

“There are many organizations,” Simon said, looking away in the direction Shae had disappeared. “Some are more open than others. Many have strict rules, but a few have their roots only in secrecy. And one can be lonely even in a crowd. You know that, don’t you, Bloody?”

Kai’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t look at me like that,” Simon almost chuckled, standing up. “A man knows Contestants like Blood Demon. A man searches for Killers like Blood Demon.”

Kai stared at him as a blue hue shimmered around Simon’s body.

“Arlen didn’t say it outright, but he has given you an Invitation,” Simon continued, the blues becoming bluer. “A man can’t invite you. You are not ready. Not yet.”

A sudden flash. Simon smiled and nodded in the way he always had. And then he disappeared, leaving behind a silence even mightier than the absence of Arlen.

What theKai gaped. And I thought the old wizard was the craziest?!

Kai repeated Simon’s words in his mind before taking out his cock and pissing over them in the open. The wind had become warm, and it played with his manhood. As the new silence marched towards him, Kai, for the first time, felt dirty.

I can use a bath, Kai thought, smelling himself.

The silence lifted its steel sword.

“Hehe…”

The silence hacked at Kai. A sudden chuckle kissed the sword. They tasted each other before a brief parting.

“Hehehe…”

The silence’s sword returned. So did the laugh. The piercing chuckle kissed the sword vigorously, slipping in the tongue.

The steel shattered!

“Haha…”

Kai held his hands high and laughed. He laughed like a maniac, his face contorting into that of a psychopath’s.

“Hahaha…”

The wind tried to bury the sound, but the laugh intensified. Kai’s knees buckled. No. Not in fear, but in excitement. In… Pleasure!

“HAHA!”

The laugh had such an effect on him that tears streamed out of his eyes. His stomach ached, and he rolled over the earth, rocks, and grass, clutching it. What crazy, what madness, and what silence? Nothing felt crazier, more disturbing, and more demonic than this laugh.

“HAHAHA!”

Some said a Demon had been born after the death of Kai’s mother.

“HAHAHAHA!”

Some said the Demon had always been alive, hidden deep under the mask of Kai’s charming eyes.

“HAHAHAHAHA… Cough! Cough!!” The laugh turned into a sudden fit of coughs, and Kai panted for air. Finally, he stopped, the laugh vanishing into a thin smile on his face. He lay there on the cool ground, gazing at the sky littered with clouds, the low wind blowing on his face, like a maiden’s silk.

The words echoed then. In Kai’s mind, they repeated themselves for the hundredth time.

Your Mission is to Assist Thunder Faction in saving Mr. Beedle’s life, Desmond had told Kai. It has nothing to do with what happens to Arlen. Or who the Captain of Guard is.

Yes, Desmond, you were right, Kai told himself. It also had nothing to do with what would happen to Mr. Beedle after reaching Dufftown. And it also had nothing to do with what happens to that book of his.

Kai’s lips twisted into a hideous, vile grin. He swept his hand towards the sky as if snatching the entire vastness in one curl of his fingers. The sky, though, didn’t move. It was still there. But Kai’s hand wasn’t empty either.

A book! Kai’s pale fingers were wrapped around its black cover, feeling its ancientness. And in thick gray ink, the book’s name seemed to stare murderously at Kai. One last scorning chuckle and his clear hazel pupils reflected the title written in embossed runic symbols. Kai did not understand that Runic title, but what could it mean other than…

The Tales of Beedle the Bard!
