“He fears me,” Desmond said, his eyes glaring at Arlen’s back. “That’s why he doesn’t want me to be with him in the same carriage.”

Kai mutely listened, his face flushed from the all the wine they had drunk. Arlen had divided them into two groups. Arlen, Shae, and Sonia would guard Mr. Beedle in one carriage. On the other, Desmond, Simon, and Kai would have all the brooms.

We have two carriages among us, Arlen had said. So, let’s use them lavishly.

“Humph!” Desmond snorted. “We are doing it. Before taking the broomsticks to the air.”

“Doing what?” Kai asked, raising an eyebrow.

Simon had yet to enter the carriage. Even then, the whispers coming out of Desmond’s mouth showed how tense the man had become in just a few minutes.

“I have already talked with Sonia,” Desmond said, leaning over more than he needed to. “We are making a move against Arlen.”

“What?!” Kai spat. “Desmond, this wasn’t the plan. We agreed to blackmail Arlen and get some Mission Credits and Items.”

After surviving the ambush, they had indeed agreed on using the details to blackmail Arlen. But only just before reaching Dufftown, when Arlen would be pressed for time. He would not be taking his chances against two 2nd floors Contestants and a newbie with Elementary Ability. Kai and Desmond, both had come to this conclusion.

Sonia had agreed to assist them the moment she got to hear what had happened. And Desmond had said he would overcome Simon easily.

“That was then, this is now,” Desmond said, his eyes blazing red. The dark circles under them had darkened, and his jolly nature seemed to have washed down by wine. “With Arlen’s plan, we will never get to surround him. He will kill us both the moment we enter the sea.”

“He is a wizard,” Kai said sharply. “No kind of ambush guarantees our victory, Desmond.”

“A wizard, yes, but a false one,” Desmond said, pointing to the fact of Arlen’s false wand. “And don’t forget my Skill. The Minor Soul Shaker is a Charged Triggered Skill.”

Kai had figured out the nature of Desmond’s Skill by then. Otherwise, the very first use of this Skill would have killed Kai when he was surrounded in the hut. Now Kai knew what Desmond was planning to do.

“What about Mission?” Kai asked uncertainly. “He is the Captain of Guard.”

“Your Mission is to Assist Thunder Faction in saving Mr. Beedle’s life,” Desmond said as if Kai had forgotten. “It has nothing to do with what happens to Arlen. Or who the Captain of Guard is.”

Is he hinting at something? Kai thought.

“What about the others?” Kai said, frowning, his face showing obvious reluctance. “They won’t just sit and watch, you know.”

“Haha! Are you worried about the girl now?” Desmond laughed, a touch of his personality returning to him. “Don’t worry. I know she has a thing for you. No harm will come to her. We still need her for the rest of the journey. It’s Simon that troubles me.”

“You want me to hold back Simon,” Kai said, guessing as much. “I am not too sure about it.”

“You are worthy enough,” Desmond said, with an iron certainty. “If you can escape the full might of a 2nd floor’s Contestant, then you can easily resist a weaker opponent for some time, can’t you?”

He had Kai then.

If Kai were to say no, then Desmond would surely get to know Kai was lying about the shop’s incident.

So Kai nodded. He had to.

“Sigh!” Desmond put a hand on Kai’s shoulder. “You are a good kid. It will all be over before you would even get to say Quidditch.”

“A what now?!”

The carriage’s door opened before Desmond could reply to Kai’s puzzled expression.

Simon walked in silently. When he sat down, he gave a brief nod to both Desmond and Kai and closed his eyes.

Desmond winked at Kai and leaned back, leaving Kai lost in thoughts. By the time a hidden and unnoticed smile came upon Kai’s lips, the carriages were already running at full speed.

For a full 45 minutes, it was quiet.

Yes. A quiet...

A quiet before the storm.

Except for the rattling of carriage wheels, horses’ whining, cracks of the whip, and the broomsticks striking at each other, there had been paltry words spoken and shared.

The sign came as suddenly as the first sigh of the wind.

A sudden jerk jolted Kai, Desmond, and Simon. The horses seemed to have gone berserk. From afar, the sound of a bang came to their ears. But it was the ear-piercing voice that truly shook them up.

“SONIA!”

Desmond never said a word and jumped out, kicking the carriage door open. Kai followed Desmond. Simon just behind him.

Some dozens of meters away, Arlen was clutching his head. Blood was running down through his hand, dripping over the ground like a faulty tap. Half of his face was bloody, and in his right hand was the wand. Its tip pointed at the figure standing against him.

Sonia was standing tall there. Her back was to the carriage, from which Shae’s face could be seen, horrified beyond doubt. There were two black daggers in Sonia’s hands, and a strip of paper was attached to their ends.

“Explosive Kunais!” Simon exclaimed. “Bloody, help me. Throw the water can at the captain.”

Simon dashed towards Arlen, but Kai was upon him before that. He slid under him, tripping the one-eyed man, and before he knew what was happening, Kai’s dagger was at Simon’s throat.

Desmond had got him a new one before their return.

“What’s the meaning of this?!” Simon asked, a terror on his face. “Desmond, what have you done?”

Arlen and Sonia didn’t look away from each other. Sonia’s hands lifted, and she was just about to throw the Kunais when a burst of Mana came out of Arlen.

Expelliarmus!

A brilliant flash of scarlet light came out of the wand, almost blinding Kai. In the next moment, the two Kunais were flying high in the air, and Sonia’s hands got thrown outwards like dead branches.

The scarlet was followed by gold.

Desmond’s eyes were shining like never before.
