The broomstick carried Arlen’s anger like a current.
Kai could feel his wrath then, Arlen’s fury seemed to match the magical beast advancing towards them. It was an absurd thought, what Kai’s question had implied.
It was madness.
Insanity is in the eyes of the beholder, Kai thought. Let me prove it to you, captain.
“Captain,” Kai shouted. “You just have to swoop down and catch me from falling. I can take care of the rest.”
But Arlen was having none of it. The broomstick hadn’t stopped its crazed rush. 8 more minutes, and they would be out of these hills.
“No!” Arlen roared. “If you want to die so badly, then jump off. I don’t care. Just don’t expect me to come for you.”
“1 drop of potion,” Kai said, smiling slyly. “For you to catch me after I am done with it.”
Arlen had gone so silent, tasting those words, that they could hear Mr. Beedle’s snores then. The wizard had dozed off, feeling pleasingly warm between Kai and Arlen.
“10,” Arlen finally said. “I want 10.”
“One, captain,” Kai feigned reluctance. “I only have 3 of them left.”
“Then give me all of them,” Arlen said.
“Deal!” Kai said, fearing Arlen would realize what was going on.
Kai’s fear was genuine.
Arlen’s wind-battered face became as ugly as a hag when he found out Kai had ripped him off. Before he could cancel the deal, though, the broom suddenly became light.
Kai had already jumped off.
Kai wasn’t oblivious to free falls and gravity. Before he had got his prized red armor in his past life, he, like others, also used flying boards and gliders. He had the Blood Essence of Giant Red Python then, but being in the sky never held him back from using its natural abilities.
Kai could slither as good in the skies as on the ground.
Hands and legs outstretched and bent, Kai looked at the magical beast rushing towards him. It wasn’t as fast as its dive from above, but it was gaining speed. And whenever it flapped, it generated a tremendous force, blasting away the surrounding wind.
The spear-like bill jerked forward like the thrust of a knight.
Sounds seemed to vanish then. Kai knew he would have to survive that thrust first. There was no other way. Arlen would have never agreed to bring Broomstick near the beast. Not when Mr. Beedle was with him.
Come forth… Kai called out.
The blue-tailed Boa Constrictor reappeared on his arm. The wind blew away the rising hot air around Kai, but his face had become red like the tip of the Great Redshank’s bill.
100 meters…
40 meters…
10…
Just when he saw murder and rage written in the magical beast’s eyes, Kai remembered another spear. The long spear, and that thrust. That feeling of the steel in his chest.
His eyes narrowed, becoming slits instantly.

The beast cried a call of fury. A last flap of the wings, and it sent its beak at Kai’s reddish figure, reeking of blood.
Just before it could pierce him, Kai saw. The bill, that spear, was as long as him, and as thick as his waist. The moment it would touch him, he would be cut in half.
The tip of the bill kissed Kai’s chest. The snake slithered then.
Like a rope bending upon being punched, Kai’s spine bent as he twisted himself. The bill ripped his chest, taking away a big piece of flesh, but the rest of his body slid down. The bill was as smooth as oiled steel.

Kai hit its feathered head, and as he tumbled down, he also looked into its eyes. Round and big, red veins surrounding its brown pupils like a web.
And then Kai was on its back. His hands caught the feathers, gripping them like his life was depending on them.
The fledgling let out a cry of pain, and its rage doubled, being mocked by a puny target. It thrashed its wings, rolling and maneuvering in the air, trying to throw Kai off its back. But Kai’s grip only tightened with passing seconds.
Cry!!!
This wasn’t a cry of challenge, Kai remembered. This was a cry for help.
Most of his life had gone in learning about beasts, their way of life, and their behavior. Even if the beast wasn’t the one he had ever heard about, and even if it was a magical one, it was a beast, nonetheless.
The essence was the same.
“Haha!” Kai suddenly laughed, sensing the beast’s nervousness. He saw the stats hovering over the beast then.

The beast was going up, but then it dived again. Wind blasted against Kai’s face, trying to tear him off. He was like a leech, stuck to its back just waiting for the cooldown to be over.
The pressure was so strong on his back that Kai couldn’t even lift his head.
Where is it taking me? Kai asked. He could feel it going down and down. It isn’t planning to crash, right?
From the corner of his eyes, Kai noticed a purplish hue of the hills, and greenery of the leaves. The thought of letting the feathers go crossed his mind.
No! Kai buried the thought, steeling his nerves. This is power. This is what I have been waiting for. I must not let go of the chance.
Kai’s vision was blocked from its wings. So, little by little, he climbed up to its shoulders to see where it was taking him. Kai lifted his neck and saw the eye. The beast was flying straight towards rows of leafless trees, but it was looking at him.
It was mocking him.
Kai took a deep breath and spit in its eye. Another cry, and when the beast opened its eye again, it wasn’t looking at Kai anymore. A sudden powerful flap and they would be among the naked trees; a well-armed army of over a thousand wooden soldiers.
And Kai was the shield on the beast’s back.
AN: Readers can access a general idea of how the beast looks like on discord. I have uploaded an image there. Still, I think the description is enough in itself. Thank you.
