How long is this night?
The question had been haunting Kai for the last 3 hours. Ser Morgan Tussy had been riding non-stop for 7 hours by now, crossing streams, barren hills, plains, and dense forests, following the game trails.
He never rode the destrier at its max speed. It was just a trot. A casual pacing, as if he was enjoying the view. Except there was no view. No life. No sound. Nothing. It was just a knight and his horse.
And, yes. A group of the most haggard-looking people, trying to stay close to him.
How many of them had forgotten to walk? How many of them could still see, and how many of them could still think? None wanted to know. None cared. Ser Morgan, the captain, certainly didn’t.
Don’t leave the trail for 20 miles, once the knight had shouted at them, before galloping away. When those who had survived these twenty miles reached the destination, thinking it was over, they found Ser Morgan happily putting out the fire and mounting the horse again.
Some had lost their temper, seeing that. The weak-willed, as Kai named them, had rushed at the captain, shouting curses, and taking out their pitiful Items. When they died, Kai had seen the relief on their faces. The knight said nothing, other than pressing his knees against the destrier's belly, continuing the trot.
How long is this night?
Kai had lost sight of the captain only once, but he had managed to find him again soon enough. Every fiber of his muscles was falling apart, screaming bloody murder. The Blood Demon, though, never stopped. His eyes were bloodshot, and in his right hand was a raw piece of flesh.
On and on, Kai kept putting one leg in front of the other, pushing himself a little more forward, and chewing meat. By now, he had thanked the System hundreds of times. Chaos, thank you, Kai had been muttering all the time. Thank you for recommending the Attribute. Thank you!
It was so like Kai for him to do so. Kai had become a person who could kill at a moment’s notice if there was a benefit in that. Still, those who did nothing but help him, he would return the favor several times fold. It didn’t mean he trusted the System now, though. Being thankful and being trustful were two entirely different things.
But yes, he was thankful. If it weren’t for the Agility, Kai could have never crossed the entire stretch of the distance they had covered so far just by depending on his Stamina. If it wasn’t for his Agility, he would have already lost sight of the Knight, like many others. Then he would have to depend on his Luck to find the captain. A thing he would never even at the doors of death.
Thank you!
This one was for himself. He thanked himself for hoarding the beast's corpse. If it wasn’t for it, he would have already died like others who didn’t have anything to eat. This flesh was keeping him alive, giving him the strength to keep up.
Trip!
For a moment, Kai did not know what happened. Oh, I fell, Kai thought, tasting the dirt in his mouth. He pushed the earth, but the earth was pulling him so strongly that Kai felt like letting it do as it pleases. Wouldn’t that be nice? Kai chuckled in relief.
Thank you!
Who was the recipient of this one? To whom Kai had said this? Kai couldn’t have known. The two words just rang in his mind before vanishing like a wisp of smoke. But this thanks did its part. Kai was again following the knight when he came to himself. The memory of standing up, biting a bloody piece of magical beast’s flesh, and killing someone again, was lost.

How long is this night? People behind Kai must have been screaming to themselves too. For the Demon had been killing whoever tried to snatch his food from him. One time a man had lunged at the flesh in Kai’s hands. The next moment, his head was rolling down the hill like a soft squishy ball.
Some must have also noticed a silver arch flashing against the moonlight then. But it was quick enough to not relate that to Kai’s broken, tiny figure. Kai had to be prudent in using his longsword. It gave him Strength, but it also brought his Agility down by one point. So he had been taking it out just to cut and kill. None following him was as strong as Simon. Their body was weak, their defense weaker. It wasn’t enough to break his Item.
But… Kai was fighting against himself. He was tired. He was dying.
Why are they doing this? Kai asked himself, thinking of the force behind Ser Morgan. Why are they killing the newbies? Can’t they use the weak as cannon-fodder?
Kai wasn’t concerned about anyone behind him. He was curious, though. This curiosity kept his mind away from thinking of his dwindling strength. So he asked. He thought, and he answered. Maybe they are filtering out the useless. But why? Why?
“We are here,” the Knight suddenly said and stopped. No voice had ever felt so sweet to Kai before, other than his mother’s. Behind him, the survivors tried to roar out cheers, which came out as muffled grunts. Kai, for the first time, turned to look at them. Thirty, maybe forty, Kai thought, unable to do the counting.
But where are we? Kai asked himself, after a bout of ceaseless panting. It was a plain, grassy, and rocky area. Trees were sparse, and the dry air had a chill in it. The moonlight let Kai see as good as any other man, but he couldn’t see It. The city, where is it?
The same question must have crossed others’ minds too, for their heads were bobbing all around to find the reward for this fatal journey. They also couldn’t see it. There was no sign of the city, of the living or the dead.
Ser Morgan Tussy was looking at him when Kai finally gave the knight a questioning look. Kai could feel the man in the armor staring at him. And then the knight laughed, his horse whining along with him. “Haha! Tonight is beautiful, isn’t it?” he asked, pointing at the moon. “Come on then. Look alive! Take out your Items, or your cock or cunt. It’s time for your first battle.”
