“Why do you look so sullen?” Arlen asked, chewing hard on the meat in his mouth.
Kai gave Arlen a hard look. His upper body was naked, with dozens of bullet holes. Blood was seeping out of the holes as if they were lazy waterfalls. Arlen’s face was ashen, but his mouth never stopped devouring the roasted meat.
“It’s nothing,” Kai said, taking a bite for himself. The magical creature tasted like the sweetest pure, raw capsule of power. It was delicious but hard.
After a brief talk with Simon, Kai had found the value of details was enough for half the bird’s size. But even half turned out to be more than the four Contestants could eat. Arlen’s state had deviated little from that of Simon’s.
“The bitch kept firing at Mr. Beedle,” Arlen said, giving a piece of roasted meat to Shae. “I had to act as the meat shield. Things could turn ugly if you hadn’t shared the meat.”
Arlen had been the most surprised when he found out Kai’s decision to help Simon. What are you up to now? He had asked Kai. But Simon had intervened at the right time, making up a beautiful story of a man saving another man’s life. Arlen wasn’t foolish enough to believe that, but he also needed the magical creature’s meat.
So here they were, eating the bird Kai had risked his life to get.
Kai could feel Arlen had become too friendly with him after the ‘breakfast’. One reason was the obvious rise in Arlen’s HP, Kai knew. The other was also obvious in a way. It was Shae. She hadn’t dared to look at Kai even once. She spent all the time sitting or walking with the captain.
But there was one question Arlen had asked twice. “Tell me again,” he said, “How did the man die?”
Damn it! Kai cursed. He is not letting it go.
The braided man’s death seemed to have troubled Arlen. If not in Stats, the enemy was as strong as Arlen in battle prowess. For him to die, even under the combined power of Kai, Simon, and Shae, could mean a lot of things.
“He had taken out a snake type of magical beast,” Kai said, repeating the same words. “… and then the beast turned against him. I took the opportunity and killed the bastard.”
“Crushed his heart, you mean,” Arlen said, narrowing his eyes at Kai. “Didn’t you fear the beast?”
Fuck you! Just eat the meat, Kai thought, anger bubbling up inside him. On his face was an innocent smile. “No,” Kai said. “The beast had already disappeared into the red and white ball.”
“Pokeball…” A tiny, feeble voice came from Arlen’s behind. Kai could barely see Shae’s hair shining red and gold there.
Pokeball?! Is that what the thing is called? Kai thought. How does she know?
Arlen turned around and gave an assuring smile to Shae. Kai could feel the lecherous thoughts hidden in that smile. But he didn’t care. “Shae’s right,” Arlen said, still looking at Shae, making her blush. “That’s an Item from a random world full of magical beasts.”
Thump!
A random world full of magical beasts! Kai felt his heart would have given out if he hadn’t eaten to his fill by now. He remembered the purple-yellow-colored snake, and a hidden smile surfaced on his face.
“Which world is it, captain?” Kai asked, stroking the roasted meat. “Can you tell me?”
Arlen looked at Kai’s gesture of stroking the juicy meat. Even an idiot could tell Kai was using the favor he had done as a payment for the answer.
“I know,” Arlen chuckled, not minding Kai’s shameless attitude. On the contrary, Arlen even seemed to admire these little things about Kai. “The world of Pokemon.”
Pokemon! Kai imprinted the name into his memory. A drop of saliva escaped his mouth and dripped onto the meat in his hand. Had he salivated, thinking of Pokemon, or for the food in his hand? Only he knew the answer.
“Go on then,” Arlen commanded, finishing the meal. “Collect your loot. We will leave the moment Simon says he can handle the broom.”
Kai looked to his right. Simon was stuffing meat after meat into his mouth. The moment Kai looked at him, Simon too looked back. He smiled and nodded at Kai.
I don’t like him, Kai realized.
Way beyond Simon, sitting over a rock, was Mr. Beedle. All four Contestants had agreed to not bother him anymore. “No more unexpected incidents, or bursts of anger,” Arlen had sternly told them.

“Captain,” Kai said, turning away, as if it was just a fleeting comment. “I think we should cover Mr. Beedle under a cloth. His state isn’t exactly becomingly, don’t you think?”
Kai approached the corpse, leaving behind Arlen to mull over his words. The smell of death hit him, along with piss and shit. The man must have lost control of his bowels at the moment of death. Crabs had claimed his body, and some were even going inside him. Kai had left a big hole from his throat to chest.
The treasure chest’s hologram beckoned him. It was a pretty sight. The only sight that made Kai happy.

Kai took a deep breath. And when the smell of rot and filth entered him, he realized he shouldn’t have.
Sigh! Kai felt troubled. It appeared then. The key. A choice had already been made.

The key and treasure chest vanished. Kai scanned his Inventory, hoping it had enough space to hold whatever the System and his Luck had awarded him.
A smile. “Haha!” Kai laughed, seeing the Item. He took it out.
The red and white felt as if the ethereal colors had become solid.
