“Can we even go in?” asked Hiyori, nervously fumbling with her own fingers, trying to subconsciously find excuses not to get out of the car. “They are not really allowing strangers to even park here!”
“Too bad, I already parked the car!” replied, pulling on the handbrake.
“We are going to be fined!”
“I will pay for it!” answered immediately, opening his seatbelt.
“It is still only seven in the morning!”
“Early enough for the teachers, early enough for us!” said with an uplift voice as he got out of the car, walking over to her side, opening the door. “Come, out!” nodded with his head, towards the school building but Hiyori was sitting still without even turning her head towards Everlong.
“NO!”
“Fine!” sighed the man, reaching in, unbuckling her and pulling her out by hand, like an impatient father, dragging her daughter into school.
“I don’t wanna! Noooo! I’m not going!” screamed, flailing towards the car door, trying to catch onto it without much success.
“And why is that?” asked with a calm voice, closing the door with his leg, easily carrying her away with one hand.
“...”
“See? You don’t have any idea, do you?”
“I… I just don’t want to ever come here! Ever again!”
“Because?” asked again, walking up to the already open front gate, walking past it leisurely.
“...” She had no answer for him. Surprisingly, as soon as she tried to think about one, she just felt complete dread, coming back here.
“It is because of your accident!” said, stopping a dozen or so meters away from the front door to the main building of the school. Putting her down, Hiyori looked around with trembling legs.
It was the same, just as she remembered it. The black, wrought iron fence around the school, with their pointy tips. The clear, gray pavement, leading to the steps that went up to the main entryway, into the big building complex. She could see the sports field to her right, while to her left it was a road, leading to the school’s own pool and gymnasium. The four story tall, white walls and clear windows did not change at all from the time she was still a student here. Feeling her memories resurface with the same feelings she had when first attending high-school, quickly made her nauseous. Catching a glimpse of her own image, looking back down at her from the reflection of a window, where her classroom was once, sent shivers through her spine. Feeling deep dread by just watching the big clock at the highest point of the building was enough to feel like she was close to judgment day.
“Why are you afraid?” asked Everlong, holding her shoulders with two hands, standing behind her and supporting Hiyori’s fragile frame.
“I want to go home…” said with a thin voice, tears trailing down her face, starting to hyperventilate.
“It is okay…” whispered, stroking her head that almost had a magical effect of calming her down, slowing down Hiyori’s rapidly increasing breathing. “This fear is not yours.”
“...!?” gasped, catching on quickly, by now a bit familiar with his style of speech, realizing his questions were leading her to the correct answer.
“The one… who is afraid of coming here… is the spirit!” said, wiping her eyes with her sleeves, turning around, looking up at Everlong who just smiled.
“Correct! Some of it may be yours, but it is merely amplified. The real one who is afraid is not you!”

“Is it really afraid?” gulped as her own fear was quickly overwhelmed by realization. As soon as that happened it seemed like the surreal feelings she was experiencing lost their grips and she broke free of them for now.
“Yes! If it is afraid, it can mean only one thing!” nodded Everlong.
“It happened here!” turned around in a snap, watching the school building once again, accompanied by a new kind of fear, creeping up along her back, realizing all the pains she experienced since that day, all originated from here!
“Excuse me, but what are you doing here?” walked out a female teacher from the main doors, hurrying down the steps. She was wearing a gray business dress, with her black hair tied up in a bun. She had a great figure and her aura exuded maturity. Hiyori catched Everlong as he was scanning her from top to bottom, his eyes quickly making mental notes of parts of her body.
“Men…” clicked her tongue, immediately switching from fear to sudden jealousy. Even a bit of an irrational kind of jealousy, feeling angry at Everlong for even thinking about other women! Plus that teacher surely was fooling around with her students! “Wait…” recoiled a little, realizing these were not even her own thoughts!
“We are going to talk about it later.” held Everlong her shoulders still, whispering to her.
“This place is-” continued the woman, arriving close to them before finally stopping and she was stuck in the middle of her sentence, gawking, looking at Hiyori.
“What?” furrowed her eyebrows as a response, feeling really weird now, fighting with strange emotions that were coming out from nowhere!
“Hiyori?” asked the woman, with a soft, almost trembling voice.
“Hm?” looked at her face a bit longer, squinting, before realization hit her “Sayako?!”
“So it is you!” yelped, sounding like a small scream, reaching out to hug her, only holding back from it at the last moment. “You… barely changed!” said, trying to smile and sound friendly but she was also deeply shaken up. She visited her a few times in the hospital… but after she was let out, she simply disappeared. There were no contacts left behind, no new address, nothing. She was… gone. Now it was her first time meeting with an old friend who she thought she had already lost once.
“The combo of mental and physical trauma usually does that.” replied Hiyori, with a blank smile “You look good on the other hand!”
“I see…” answered, pulling back her hands quickly, crossing them before her chest, nervously holding her own elbows. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” shook her head “It is good to see you… and a teacher? Huh… never thought you would end up as one! I was sure you would go into journalism or something!”
“Life happens!” smiled with a bit of nostalgia. “It was not my first choice but here I am now and I learnt to like it! What about you? What are you doing here?”
“Well…” tried to come up with something but just fell silent. She had no idea how to say anything to Sayako, without sounding like a complete nutjob.
“We are solving problems for her.” cut in Everlong, smiling at Sayako as he nodded. “My name is Doctor Everlong, I am Hyiroi’s caretaker. We are revisiting old places from her memories so I can help her accept the past and let her move to the future.”
“Ah, I see, my name is-” flinched Sayako, introducing herself to him as now everything was making sense to her.
“Sayako-chan.” smiled Everlong “I know, Hiyori spoke greatly about you in one of our sessions! You are even more beautiful in real life than by her descriptions!”
“Ahaha… please! Those descriptions are more than a decade old!” laughed, covering her lips, feeling shy and embarrassed, acting like a teenage girl as she was looking into Everlong’s eyes. Watching the two interact Hiyori felt like she should tell them both to shut the fuck up… like… RIGHT NOW! When she caught her thoughts, once again, turning angry and irritated she had to force herself not to show it on her face.
“Would it be possible for us to have just a quick walkthrough of the school premises? You are welcomed to accompany us of course! I just want Hiyori to have a chance to see old places, it is a great way of healing!”
“Sure, let me arrange it and inform the other teachers, I don’t think it would be a problem and I’ll be happy to come along!” nodded, leading them into the school building. Hiyori had not much choice as she was pushed forward by Everlong and he never took his hand off of her, either touching her back or holding her shoulder as she led her inside the school.
