Chapter 40: Everydays

Waking up in the morning, seeing the sun’s rays breaking through the multiple holes on the thick cloud layers drew a smile onto Hiyori’s face. Stretching, laying on the huge bed, under a thick blanket was one of life’s happy, little moments and she really enjoyed it to its fullest right now. After finally sitting up, reaching for her new phone, the first thing she did was to send a ‘Good Morning!’ text to Everlong, chuckling to herself, imagining him struggling with how to check it. If he even knew what made that noise when her text arrived! To her surprise, the answer came in under a minute, just as she was standing before her window, wearing only a white shirt, that reached down to her knees. Looking back at the phone on the bed, the sun shone through her clothing from behind, gently outlining her figure as she shuffled forward.

 

“It’s almost noon. I’m down at the shop, want something?” read the message that arrived without misspellings or any attached words of frustration. 

 

“Damn… He really learnt it quickly!” clicked her tongue Hiyori, typing back that she wouldn’t say no to some sweets, no matter the kind. “Oh, and bring a bag of coffee beans, please, I totally forgot to buy any!” added in a quick, second reply.

 

“Sure. Be there soon.” replied Everlong almost instantly, surprising her even more.

 

“Huh…” blinked, closing it, rubbing her eyes and tussling with her messy hair, entering her bathroom with a long yawn.

 

By the time she came out, after enjoying a long soak in hot water, then drying her hair, Everlong was already there, just finishing brewing coffee and pouring it out into cups.

 

“You look refreshed! Even the bags under your eyes are gone!” chuckled, watching the short girl walk forward with bare feet and wearing only a blue towel around herself.

 

“Thanks!” smiled, taking away one of the cups, sitting down at the dining table, starting to unceremoniously dunk some of the croissant that Everlong brought back.

 

“If you are not careful, you are going to flash me something!” teased, sitting down, opposite to her while Hiyori continued to swing her legs unceremoniously. 

 

“I guess it wouldn’t be a first for you!” licked her lips, enjoying the breakfast to its fullest.

 

“Every occasion is unique! Every one of them is attached to a different person! I’m not looking at it in a vacuum but as the part of someone!” replied, raising his cup, looking into her eyes, turning Hiyori’s expression a shade redder.

 

“So in short… you want to see my whole body naked?” countered suddenly and even herself did not know why she said it out loudly, but once again, it was too late to take it back. 

 

“How provocative~” chuckled, looking at her, finally moving his eyes from hers, traveling downwards on her body slowly. Still, in the end he just did not answer, at least not with words. He calmly finished his coffee with her, standing up with a faint smile at the end, leaving Hiyori’s heart in a wild race throughout their breakfast. Watching him go over to the counter, she finally turned her head back to her remaining coffee, silently finishing it before also standing up and going to change into something more “presentable”. “We got a meeting by 8 in the evening!” traveled Everlong’s voice into her bedroom as she was dressing up. 

 

“What kind?” asked, already picking out her formal clothes they bought together so it would be ready, hanging it up by the doorframe. 

 

“Official one, I am going to introduce you to my contact in the Imperial Government! We will get you all the permits you may need, new ID, Driving License, Passport, Firearm Permit, whatever that you may need in the future!”

 

“I can’t drive! Neither did I ever hold a gun! The old Nippondo guns don't count, do they?”

 

“Sadly, no, they don’t! Neither do those in the arcades! But it does not matter, we get you all the licenses and we worry about the rest later! You can always learn it from me!” answered with a laugh.

 

“Are guns even effective?” came out Hiyori, wearing a jumper with a hoodie, leaning against the kitchen counter, watching Everlong clean up everything.

“Not against demons. But if you come across an Invader it is a valid option to shoot the host.” answered calmly but Hiyori’s body immediately stiffened. The thought of killing someone frightened her, especially if the victim was not even in a clear state of mind. “These are the worst case scenarios in this line of work.” continued, looking at her, almost as if he read her thoughts.

 

“Wouldn’t an exorcism… also work?” asked, with a bit of a weaker voice.

 

“There are times where… there is no time to perform one. In those cases a bullet to the head is the quickest and most merciful choice.” 

 

“I never killed anyone…” murmured, stating the obvious, gently hugging herself as she crossed her arms before her chest. 

 

“Hiyori.” put down everything Everlong, turning towards her. His expression was calm, kind but his words were frank. “One day, you will. This is the truth. One day, you are going to have to.”

 

“...” nodded, gulping loudly and even though they were heavy words that others may avoid or go around them, trying to soften them up, but Everlong was not like that. He was laying it out before her, just as bare as she was a few moments ago. “Thanks…” whispered Hiyori with honesty, grateful that he was not sugarcoating it. 

 

“Sorry.” smiled Everlong with sincerity, gently stroking her hair that was held together in a ponytail. “That is the truth, but I’m going to be there with you, whenever that happens. Okay?”

 

“Um…” nodded, forcing a smile onto her face and in the end hugging him. Everlong did not push her away, just chuckled, rubbing her back and when she let him go, she was back to her normal self again. “So, what about driving? I don’t think I can reach the pedals AND see out of the car at the same time! Look at me!” moaned, stretching and standing on her toes, trying to look tall but she barely reached up to his chest. “I’m not even 150 cm tall! Do you know how frustrating this is?!” 

 

“Booster seat.”

 

“Fuck you!” laughed Hiyori but her voice was sad as really, that sounded like the only option. “Haahh… Maybe I should buy one of those clown cars that usually in the cartoons?” 

 

“Relax, if push comes to shove, we can order you a modified one, you never thought about how midgets drive their cars?”

 

“Oh… good point!” nodded with a renewed interest “Hey, true, I totally forgot about that! So I CAN drive a car! I was always interested in it as a kid! Seeing dad drive us around the city… it always brought a smile on his face, he really liked sitting behind the wheel!”

 

“See? Let’s wait for all this to blow over first and I’ll teach you to drive!” laughed with her Everlong, rubbing her hair that was held up in a ponytail. 

 

“Thanks!” said again, now with a happy smile plastered all over her face, shining just like the golden rays of the sun. “Ah! I almost forgot! How did you answer my texts so quickly? Yesterday you had a problem with opening it up or dragging the icons from one screen to the other!”

 

“Oh, I was fiddling with it all night.” answered, picking it out, unlocking it without a hitch and bringing up the text messages. “See this?” pointed at the little microphone icon. “It is much easier to dictate than to type away!” grinned.

 

“No way… I did not even turn that on for you!” blinked with great surprise looking up at him.

 

“Yeah, I found it out by myself. You were right, these are truly handy things! Much easier to record with than working with tapes!” answered her with a smug expression, leaving Hiyori there with enlarged eyes, finally clicking her tongue as she wanted to tease him a bit more!
