“Are you playing both sides?” asked Hiyori, intrigued as they were driving out from the city, heading back home.
“More towards the human side.” answered after a short pause “Otsuka is a shrewd man. Few of the rare breed of politicians that you can trust. One from the kind who has loyalty grounded in ideals and not in personal power and fame. Don’t think just because your country broke off from the UCA, you gained full independence immediately. Even after restoring the Imperial bloodline, crowning the new Emperor, the parliament under the royal family still has many who have strong ties to the UCA and by extension, to the Agency. Not to mention the other powers are also eager to have a presence here. You are a relatively fresh ground for expansion and they have been doing it since the 30s. Same with the Dynasty on the mainland. I call it the new age of colonization!” chuckled while mentioning it.
“I hate politics!” answered Hiyori with a sigh, feeling her head throb just thinking about it.
“Me too, that is why I don’t give two cents about whose toe I step on.” licked his lips Everlong “My goal is simply to flip the table that the demons and angels are playing on! Fuck their games!” said in a pretty good mood with a proud smile “The multiple organizations are just their extensions, so their tables are also going to be kicked over!”
“You really are a troublemaker!” giggled, hearing his childish-sounding voice right now.
“Every good detective is one! And nobody in this world is truly innocent and they hate when someone throws their dirty laundry out in the open! I know Otsuka, he is in the camp that is determined by the ideals of your great-grandfathers! Of an independent country! That is why he is stuck at his position for so long, barred from moving forward by the other players.”
“I hate politics 2.0!” rolled her eyes Hiyori, hearing him explaining it.
“What they don’t know is that Otsuka is a master at sleight of hand!” grinned Everlong “He plays his own game under the table and throughout the years he built up connections directly to the royal family. He is going to give them the details I passed on! The Imperial line is on the same page as me, I just hope it won’t change in the future!”
“Why would it?” blinked, not really understanding his skepticism, especially if the ruling family is a secret ally.
“I saw sons and daughters going against their parents, betraying their own kin. Especially when a kid can’t wait to sit in a powerful chair and with what Otsuka and his camp can gain from this… if they don’t screw it up, it is going to strengthen that chair even better!”
Hiyori had no answer to his words, remaining silent, thinking about it, even though she was not agreeing with it at all. Just thinking about herself or her own connection with her parents… she would never betray someone who they trusted and someone who helped them out! But then again, she suddenly remembered Yukari and her memories, shuddering for a moment.
“Anyway, when we are back home, you should check out the book he gave to you!”
“The Rulebook?” shook her head, shaking out the unnecessary thoughts and picking it up from between her legs. “Damn it! It is incredibly heavy!” groaned, flipping it open. “There are really this many rules?!” gasped, as it was more than 2000 pages long, all of them filled with text, in a clear, numbered list. “Wait… some are circled in?” blinked rapidly, turning multiple pages and all of them had specific numbers, circled by hand.
“It is a list of rules, written up by ALL the societies! You have a lifetime ahead of you, learning it~” grinned, glancing at the even whiter than usual face of Hiyori. “But I advise you to only memorize the circled ones.”

“Why?” gulped, closing it back in, feeling like she was back in school and just learnt, five minutes before the bell, that they are going to have a test!
“Because those are the rules you can use to your advantage and what Otsuka has the power to smooth out if you ever get busted breaking them!” laughed as an answer.
“Oh… I see! But… can’t I just ignore them all? Like you do?”
“Not at the start!” shook his head “At first you need to follow the rules, then start bending them, playing with their meanings and interpretations before you master them! After that you can break them and use them to your own advantage at the same time! You need to learn to walk before you are running, no? Also, I’m not a savage to just ignore all rules! That would hurt innocents. Even though many call me a traitor and very few trust me, I have my principles. Without them, I would be no better than any demon.”
“Why are they calling you a traitor?” asked Hiyori, hearing it from now multiple mouths, belonging to all sides at this point.
“Because I am.” answered with an honest smile. “I betrayed humanity and fell to the temptations of Hell. I served a demon, from which my current existence originates from.” continued without flinching and hiding it “Then I betrayed him too!” flashed a wild smile, making Hiyori’s heart race but not from fear but from excitement, feeling something that was familiar to what she experienced while having a taste of Yukari’s life, through her senses. “Every organization I was a part of, kicked me out. Chalk that up to my “treacherous” nature too! I am considered a dangerous Wild Card. They only let me live because I cause trouble for everyone and when I’m not doing it to their side, they are even eager to help me out! Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if even Minister Otsuka has a contingency plan if I happen to betray them too.” laughed with a voice filled with a sarcastic overtone.
“I trust you!” answered Hiyori with a strong voice, looking at him intently, not even blinking. Her words came from her heart and she already decided, no matter what others say, she would only trust him. All that she went through and what Everlong did for her, not asking anything in return was proof of his true character. Being, as he said, chosen or not!
“I know.” smiled softly, reaching out with his left hand, rubbing her head as they turned off from the highway. “And I trust you too, partner!”
“Ehehe~ You can! Boss!” giggled, enjoying the touch that suddenly trembled.
“Boss? We are partners!”
“Nah! Not yet!” stuck her tongue out Hiyori “The Minister said that I am considered your employee! I’m good with that, I still need to learn a lot of things, especially these damned rules! Until I can do what you do, I am still a trainee! So you are my boss… Boss!” grinned, flashing her white teeth.
“Haaah… do as you like!” continued rubbing her head, like petting a proud little cat “I won’t argue over something like this~”
