“This is… unexpected!” exclaimed Everlong as he watched the two with an amused look in his eyes. Hiyori was sitting next to Aoi, at the other side of his table and both of them looked pretty nervous. One because she was still coming to terms with her new form of existence while the other because she was subconsciously still scarred from her own experiences.
“My name is Aoi, Everlong-sama!” stood up with a hurry and bowed Aoi, floating through the chair as she was sitting back on it.
“Just Everlong… okay?” smiled, twitching his mouth a little, leaning forward, watching her for a minute straight, without saying anything.
“So?” cut in Hiyori, rubbing her temple, frustrated by the silence and not really knowing what to say about the presence of their new ghost client.
“She is very pure and coherent… for a ghost. While most normal people would still not see her, everybody would notice her presence. Like when you get a feeling somebody watches you but you can’t tell who.” smiled a little “Weird! Not unheard of, but weird how stable she is!”
“Am I… special?” smiled Aoi with a bit of self mockery.
“Yes!” nodded heavily Everlong.
“I was told that many times!” sighed Aoi “Always made me shiver and not in a good way!”
“Hmm… where are you from anyway?” asked Hiyori, turning towards her in her chair.
“Me?” pointed at herself Aoi by reflex.
“Hayami Aoi.” cut in Everlong, answering in her stead “She is from Hakodate, from the all-girls high-school of St. Marianne. Age 18, fourth-year student from Class-B.”
“Oh, you knew me? I… I don’t remember… Maybe a previous client? Or is it because I’m dead?” asked with great surprise and also blushing and seeing her attitude Hiyori felt her eyebrows starting to twitch. Mostly because her blush and friendly smile felt… very fake to her. Masking some kind of deep disgust. Especially when she said the word ‘client’.
“No, but I investigated your background as soon as your body got identified. It is easy to find somebody in this country.” smiled Everlong, placing a thick document on the table he ‘borrowed’ from the ministry while meeting with Otsuka. “When you get your first ID cards at age 6, everybody gets recorded, alongside with blood samples and fingerprints, it took them only 10 minutes to know who you were!”
“Um… yet I still don’t know how I died…” murmured, playing with her braided hair, letting out a quiet sigh.
“Probably charmed by Lucifer, brought here, he fooled around with you and then made you into a snack!” sighed Everlong, shaking his head, lighting up a cigarette. “He lives drinking blood soaked in multitude of feelings! Fear, pleasure, curiosity, greed, hatred, you name it!”
“Oh!” clapped Aoi with her hands in understanding but they went through even themselves so it was without any sounds “The way I hoped my mother would go one day! Karma… eh?”
“Eh…?” blinked Hiyori, shuddering in her chair.
“My mom is a cheap whore!” explained with a perfectly calm voice, turning towards Hiyori “She sold my virginity when I was 7! Luckily I could make a lot of money on the side with it and managed to hide it from her! If she would have known, she would have snorted it away immediately! In the end I was able to pay myself into a prestigious school and get myself into a dorm on campus!” smiled innocently, making Hiyori’s stomach turn how nonchalant she was with it, while Everlong’s eyes flashed in a bluish light.
“Then I know why he chose you, he always liked to appear as their savior, pulling others out from their dark places, into the light.” smirked with an annoyed voice.
“Hm…? Wait… you mean it was literally… Lucifer?” furrowed her brows Aoi.
“Yes.” answered Hiyori and Everlong at the same time.
“Huh!” let out a very long breath Aoi, looking greatly surprised. She thought they were just messing with her at first. But then she realized her own body was partly fused with the chair, sitting there as a ghost, sinking into solid fabric with her whole body. “The devil himself came for my poor, soiled soul… how romantic…!” lowered her head with a quiet sigh and pained voice, sounding very… very defeated. “I may laugh at that a few days later…”
“He can easily charm the unsuspecting, he is just as into converting others as God’s messengers are!” stood up Everlong, getting a drink for himself. Pointing the bottle towards Hiyori but she just flinched, hurriedly shaking her head, still feeling sick only by watching him pouring it out.
“Eh… even though I am into girls?” asked Aoi, with a faint, sad smile.

“Of course!” nodded Everlong “Gender has no meaning for him! You may have never even seen her as a he!”
“So you are not into guys?” asked Hiyori, her mind stuck at something she found really important.
“No!” shook her head Aoi, almost offended “Sorry!” nodded with an apologetic look towards Everlong but he just chuckled “But I don’t like them at all! That is why I paid myself into an all-girls high-school! Sadly… I am not from a high social stand and… well… I failed to make friends… but! I never gave up! I was always trying!” said with a smile, showing her strong, optimistic side towards Hiyori.
“...” held her own chest in response, feeling it twist inside a little before looking at Everlong, with eyes, asking to say something.
“The problem is simple; You are here.” scratched his throat Everlong, making both girls look at him with enlarged eyes “I mean, your soul should have been with him!” added quickly “He usually consumes them! I never expected anything remaining behind! Especially not something this… coherent! A ghost like you is truly rare!”
“Oh! Then… Am I lucky? Or should I be now sad that even the ruler of Hell discarded little me?” tilted her head Aoi, her pained eyes trying to seek answers from Everlong.
“The answer for that… It… poses some difficulties. First things first, are you religious?”
“Not really.” shook her head. “I never believed in anything spiritual, especially not God, not after what my mom made me do when I was small.” answered with full honesty, not holding back anything.
“That is another problem!” leaned back Everlong, running his fingers through his hair “The angels would ignore you, you are, on one hand, a non-believer! They would want nothing to do with you! On the other hand, you were touched by evil, so they would brand you as a lost soul.”
“Life never is easy… it seems death is jsut the same!” murmured Aoi, her shoulders visibly dropping down.
“It can be even harder!” stood up Everlong, walking to the window, opening it wide, letting in the fresh air as the sun was slowly rising in the east. “Souls like you are great food for demons! Why do you think ghost sightings fell so much in the modern day?” asked, leaning against the windowsill, watching the two, waiting for their answer.
“No idea!” answered Aoi first but then Hiyori spoke up, thinking about it for a moment.
“Because those who gained Asylum eat the wandering ghosts?”
“And that is why you are my partner~” grinned Everlong, drawing a proud smile onto her face. “Now, as your death is somewhat our responsibility, we are going to take care of you!”
“Huh?” flinched Aoi, not expecting something like that, almost ready for the inevitable fact that they just shrug and send her out into the world to find a way to live as a ghost.
“I agree!” nodded Hiyori “You were dragged into this life, we are obliged to help you!”
“This life… eh…” repeated her words, watching her own glowing, see through hands.
“I have methods that get you into the afterlife or into a full rebirth! But… those need some preliminary work to be done! Until then, you are going to follow us, for your own sake!”
“Good idea Boss, the world is a dangerous place!” nodded Hiyori, onboard with the plan immediately, whatever it may be.
“T-thank you…” replied Aoi with a trembling voice, feeling overwhelmed by their eagerness.
“For now, you can move in with Hiyori!”
“Huh?” turned his little partner towards him with a surprised look, blinking rapidly like a machine gun.
“She just said that she does not like men… and you are not one as far as I know.” smiled Everlong, flashing a smug smile at her.
