Under the bright and cheerful blue sky and among the grassy fields that were not too far from a large wooden house, two figures stood across from one another.
Both were in battle-ready stances, each eyeing the other's micromovements, falsely fainting towards one another, and measuring the other's breathing.
Was he fatigued, was he energized, was he frustrated?
All questions and more surged through their mind.
This battle, among many others, was very much mental components as much as physical.
A battle in both planes was occurring before the young men as they circled around one another in the waist-high fields of grass.
Among both young lads, one was a chocolate-skinned boy, with his long white dreads tied at the back of his head and his body dressed in similar long-sleeve brown rags similar to what his opponent across from him wore.
His opponent's wheat skin was a tint of red as he silently wheezed.
His shoulder-length black hair was also tied behind his back, and both glared at one another with their pitch-black eyes.
Finally, the young wheat-skinned lad, Zee, had found an opening as a glint shone in his eyes as he screamed out.
"HYAAH!!"
WHOOOOSH!!
Zee rushed forward, lowering himself, his body almost becoming one with the shrubbery.
The surrounding pasture rustled as he snaked his way around, looking for an opening.
Oz prepared himself, glancing around and holding up his guard, then there in the corner of his eyes, behind him to left, a fist went flying in the air towards him.
Oz grimaced as narrowly avoided the blow, crouching down and rolling away to safety and then leaping back onto his feet.
"HYAHHH!"
Yet, another fist came flying at him like a fish flying out of the water, Zee was unrelenting.
To this onslaught of attacks, Oz leaped backward, somersaulting through the air before landing back on the ground.
"Ugh," he groaned as his footing was slightly off, causing him to stumble onto the ground, 'damnit!'
Zee's eyes glimmered with greed at this sight, bursting into a full-on sprint as he trailblazed the 5ft distance the two had apart.
However, he wasn't fast enough, and now, he was full of openings.
A slight smirk spread on Oz's face as he kipped up from the floor and lowered himself into a fighting stance once more.
As Zee ran up to him, whiffing a full power swing over Oz's head and nearly tripping over himself in his haste.
Oz, now crouched in his opponent's "pocket," mused to himself with a smirk, 'ya never learn, do ya.'
Zee's eyes widened with shock upon seeing his opponent's face, but he was too late.
BOOOOOOM!
A full power punch was sent into Zee's gut sending him flying across the fields and tumbling along the floor.
'Huff... huff....' Oz breathed heavily through his nose, trying his best to keep a composed air about him as he walked to his downed foe and reached out his hand with a smile, "not bad, bro!"
Zee shook his head as he groaned, "ugh... you're way too strong, Oz." yet with that, he simply smiled and took his friend's hand, allowing himself to be helped off the ground.
Both boys began patting themselves off as Zee glanced over at the victor of this duel, "ya think we're ready?"
Oz met his gaze and then looked up to the sky that slowly began to darken since their duel, 'hmm.' with that, he slowly began to think about his time since his "close call" with Nana.
--
After that day, any air of suspicion from Nana seemed to have disappeared.
Zee had already recovered to tip-top shape by that time.
He was just genuinely asleep like a log.
Apparently, that was just a habit of his to sleep through everything.
Regardless, Nana, Oz, and Zee all discussed Oz's memory loss, and while there were many puppy-dog tears among the trio, both agreed that this was still the Oz they loved and knew, vowing to treat him normally as they always had.
However, Oz had made it very clear that he while he felt grateful towards the pair, he also vowed to build his strength and attend the academy.
While that mysterious man Nana referred to as "Tempe" had offered Oz a spot and a sponsorship, everything was just too fishy.
However, Oz had another option, one that Zee had already been preparing for, and that was to enter the region-wide competition, one that would accept only the most talented of competitors.
No other details were available, so the boys trained with one another.
Even now, as the two spared for the past few days, Oz felt a dormant power inside this Zee kid.
He saw the power this kid had.
His eyes glimmered a subtle golden light as he observed the boy across from him who was now doing stretches.
"OOOOOOOOOZ! ZEEEEEEEEEE!"
A loud female voice that boomed across the whole field awoke Oz from his thoughts.
"Looks like it's time for supper." Zee excitedly spoke as he giggled and patted his stomach.
Oz looked around at the rustling grass and the parts smushed and flattened from their battle.
A smirk rose on his face as he patted his own belly and then wrapped his arm around his friend's neck as they walked back towards the house, a delicious aroma calling to them and pulling them closer and closer.
As they finally arrived, walking through the front door, and leaving their shoes at the door among dozens of other tiny shoes, the pair heard a voice shout out to them from a room up ahead, "hurry up and wash up, lads, me and the kids ere' waitin'!"
The pair glanced at one another as they ran to the washroom to clean up.

Initially, upon being in this room for the 1st time, Oz was shocked.
In this small washroom, large enough to fit around 10 people if stuffed, was a blue orb the size of a cantaloupe atop the ceiling.
The orb had a gentle blue glow that when the boy made a hand sign in the shape of an 'O' with both hands' fingers and thumbs pressed together, a ball of water would descend from it and float naval high in front of the pair.
This allowed them to scoop out of it as if it were a bowl, the ball slowly getting smaller as the boys used large quantities of it to wash their hands and faces.
This was truly a strange world, and while Oz had adjusted a bit, he had yet to get many answers.
However, tonight would be different.
Nana assured him of that.
After exiting the washroom, the boys entered a room with a long table cluttered with plates of mouthwatering food of different types.
The children sat around were salivating as they held themselves back from immediately digging in.
If one looked closely, one'd see the strain on the children's necks as they held back.
The children sat around the long table with Nana at the very end.
She smiled at them and gestured to the two empty seats at her side, "come, boys."
With that, Oz and Zee both sat next to her.
Oz smiled at the children and Nana before gently nudging Zee into his chair as the boys chuckled and took their seats.
"Now then," Nana spoke as the boys sat, "let us pray."
With that, she reached her hands out to the two, as did the children.
The dining table was silent as Nana began the ritual they had all done for the past few nights, "Mighty Yala, I pray to you please grant these lads the strength to excel in their competition tomorrow. I know they'll give it all they've got, but I ask of you to look on them with your gaze and let them be worthy of your powers and to enter your academy successfully. I also pray to you to help my youngin's memory that he may recover and remember us, his family."
With that peeked his eyes open as he felt Nana and Zee grip slightly tighter.
He even heard some of the kids start to sniffle.
Alas, she continued, "I have prepared a feast for my family, but I humbly offer to you whatever you'd like for my message to be heard, please... accept whatever from this table you wish! "
SHHH
Twinkling green lights floated around the table, causing multiple plates of food to disappear from platters to whole entrees of meat.
They varied.
The table went from piled and overflowed atop itself to a moderate amount of enough to still fill everyone's stomach many times over.
However, the leftovers shone with a renewed green light, giving those surrounding the table the feeling that they'd be... stronger if they ate the food.
The kids were now even more fervent to dig in, and Oz and Zee were no exception, as they had been sparing all day.
Still, Nana had her eyes closed and her hands still firmly grasping the boys, and thus no one dared to even move a finger.
"By Yala's name."
She spoke out, as the table, in unison, replied back, "In Yala's name."
With that, the children all began digging in, yet Nana just looked over to the boys, who had begun piling food on their plates.
The aroma was just too tempting, and they were famished.
"So..." she spoke as her cinnamon brown eyes sparkled, "are ye ready for the tournament tomorrow?"
The boys looked at one another and then at her with bright smiles, replying in unison, "of course!"
