"What will… we do…?"
Kryllo spoke after he turned his head sideways while still on the ground.
"Hey, guys! I brought some medicine with me!"
A woman's voice echoed out. Suddenly, someone rushed out of the bushes. It was Syrenne. She was nearest Brittanya and immediately knelt down to pour the medicine in her mouth.
"What are you doing here, it's dangerous! Run away, now!"
Brittanya showed her concerned through her slightly angry voice. But Syrenne didn't listen and still gave her the medice. When Brittanya swallowed the medicine, which was a yellowish mush of some sort, Syrenne waited for it to work.
"This medicine isn't going to work! It wasn't poison…"
Brittanya shook her head as she grimaced. Her tone was now more confused than angry.
Then, more rustling noise came from where Syrenne showed up. Many townspeople emerged from the bushes, holding a sword or farming tool in their hands.
The mushroom monster slowly took steps back, then turned around and ran away, causing loud footsteps to ring again in the forest.
Jaegar and the others who were on the ground suddenly could move, as if being free after being frozen in time.
"What the heck was that?!"
Jaegar sat up and punched the ground.
---
They were now back at the doctor's clinic. A day had passed since the encounter with the mushroom monster. The three of them were still lying down on the beds. Most the people that were previously staying there had already recovered and left.
"Thanks for going after us."
Brittanya looked at Syrenne who was standing beside her bed.
"We might have been crushed by that mushroom if you hadn't been there."
"I realized that you didn't bring any medicine with you when you left. When I told them that I was going after you guys, the doctor said some of his previous patients heard about your plan to kill the monster and they wanted to help."
Syrenne smiled back at Brittanya.
"I'm just glad that you guys weren't hurt."
She then grabbed Brittanya's hand and held it tightly.
"Hey, Brittanya. Have you seen or heard of a monster that could cast magic before?"
Jaegar was staring up at the ceiling. He then looked at Brittanya. She was quiet for a while before answering.
"No, I've never heard of something like that. It should be impossible..."
She bit her lip.
"They told us at the Mage Academy that only humans can use magic and that monsters only use special abilities that are unique to their species."
"Wait… that monster was using magic?"
Syrenne was taken aback by the conversation.
"Yeah… Which is why the medicine didn't work."
Brittanya answered without looking at her.
"We… have to… make sure…"
Kryllo slowly got up from his bed.
"You're right. There must be some kind of mistake here. There might be some mage hiding somewhere and is scheming something by using that monster."
Brittanya also got up from her bed and stood beside Syrenne.
"What do you want to do, Jaegar?"
She then looked at Jaegar with a stern look on her face.
"Kill it, of course."
Jaegar furrowed his eyebrows while he stared at the ceiling again.
---
"Here. Have some tea first."
Syrenne served tea to the other three as they were seated around the dining table. They moved to the doctor's house to discuss what they should do next.
"First off, do you have any idea what type of magic that was?"
Jaegar asked Brittanya as he sipped some tea.
"From how we were dragged to the ground forcibly to how it affected our bodies afterwards, I'd say that it was some type of Arcane magic, maybe gravity control."
Brittanya stared into her tea cup.
"So, what was the reason the people affected by the magic fainted?"
Syrenne asked as she sat down with them.
"Probably because of the shock from being forcibly pulled down to the ground. After a day's rest, it would seem like nothing happened."
Jaegar offered a possible answer.
"How should… we deal… with it…?"
Kryllo drank his tea straight up and had an empty cup in his hand for a while now.
"Well, as Brittanya said, there might be someone else behind this. We can't jump into conclusions that a monster can use magic. And we can't tell other people about this just yet. But… if monsters can really somehow use magic, then my mission just got a lot more dangerous."
Jaegar was holding his cup tightly to the point of breaking it.
"We will just have to hunt down that monster again to find out!"
Brittanya stood up and slammed the table.
"It's unfair…"
She had a pained look on her face as she mumbled to herself.
"We still… don't have… a 'how'…"
Kryllo reached out his tea cup in front of Syrenne. She was surprised and immediately grabbed the tea pot.
"Maybe we can use fire magic to deal with it?"
Syrenne talked to herself loudly as she poured tea into Kryllo's cup.
"Let's just ask Brittanya to use fire magic on it. Since it's a mushroom, it should be weak to that, right?"
Syrenne looked up and waited for everyone else's reaction to her suggestion. Jaegar stared at Brittanya without talking, as if he was waiting for what she would say.
"I-I know I said I can use all types of magic."
Brittanya was shifting her gaze as she was answering Syrenne.
"But fire magic is, how should I put it, not really my strong suit."

She tried laughing it off to prevent Syrenne from pressing any further.
"Come to think of it…"
Syrenne put her finger on her chin and looked up while remembering something.
"You don't have an aura on you when you use your magic—"
"We'll just bring a torch, then."
Jaegar stood up.
"Let's go, before that monster cause any more trouble."
He walked towards the door. Kryllo followed afterwards. Brittanya was the last one to follow him. Before going out the door, she looked back at Syrenne.
"See you later. We'll take down that monster, for sure!"
---
It was already in the afternoon when they set out again to the forest. Brittanya was the one who was holding the torch. She was walking beside Jaegar while Kryllo was in front of them.
"Thanks for earlier."
She said without looking at Jaegar.
"This again, thanking me for no reason."
Jaegar shook his head. Brittanya didn't reply.
"But I stand by what I said before. I think you are the greatest mage. If I didn't think that, I wouldn't have brought you along with me."
Jaegar looked up at the sky.
"I know."
Brittanya had a faint smile on her face.
As they reached a small clearing in the forest, the ground started to shake. The giant mushroom monster appeared before them again. Brittanya then tossed the torch upwards. It then got stuck in the branches of a large tree.
"Well, that wasn't hard. Let's see if this guy really can use magic!"
Jaegar smirked in excitement. He then charged swiftly toward the mushroom monster. Before he could reach it, he was stopped in his tracks, and then fell quickly to the ground.
"I guess… I should… go too…"
Kryllo followed Jaegar but he also ended up on the ground as soon as he moved.
"Hey, greatest mage!"
Jaegar shouted while he was stuck to the ground.
"Now would be a good time to do something!"
"I am. I'm casting my fire magic."
The tree where the torch got stock was starting to burn. It was helpful that the tree had many dried leaves. Brittanya then hugged the tree and uprooted it.
The mushroom monster just looked on as this was happening. When Brittanya had fully pulled up the large tree, the monster started to turn around. But before it could run away, Brittanya threw the burning tree at the monster like a spear.
"Take this! Fire Tree Magic Javelin!"
The mushroom monster was struck from behind and fell, then it started to burn as well. The two on the ground started to move.
"Did you sense anyone near here?"
Jaegar looked at Kryllo.
"No… There was… no one… else here…"
Kryllo had his eyes closed.
"Then I think it's safe to assume that this monster really could use magic…"
Jaegar had a grim look on his face.
---
"Thank you, Doctor Arbent, for letting us stay in your house."
Syrenne bowed down in front of the doctor while everyone was standing outside the clinic.
"No worries. I'm just glad that you guys got rid of that monster for us. And, we will still buy your root crops, since it tastes good even if not used as medicine."
The doctor scratched the back of his head as he smiled.
"Thank you so much! That will really be helpful to our family."
Syrenne smiled genuinely at the doctor.
After a few more words, the party then left toward the town's exit.
"We'll escort you back to Dosael, free of charge."
Jaegar uttered nonchalantly.
"Really? But you don't have to go out of your way to do that."
Syrenne waved her hands at Jaegar as she forced a smile.
"I have business to do with the Knight's Order branch in the city, anyway. We can go ahead of you, if you prefer that."
"No, I'd appreciate it if I can accompany you back to Dosael."
She smiled at him.
"Oh, by the way. I haven't paid you guys, yet."
Syrenne took out five gold coins from the pouch she was carrying.
"We'll take just three gold coins. You helped us a lot by saving us and taking care of us afterwards."
Brittanya took the three coins from Syrenne's hand instead of five.
"My bow…"
Kryllo reached out to the remaining gold coins in Syrenne's hand but then hung his head.
"Don't worry, Kryllo. We'll fit it in our expenses. But don't expect anything fancy."
Brittanya smiled at Kryllo. She then turned to Jaegar.
"Any problems with this?"
"No. I was planning on not taking any money from her, anyway. Good thing you are a little bit greedy."
Jaegar smirked at Brittanya.
"Now you're just making me look bad!"
Everyone laughed as they made their way back to Dosael.
