Chapter 17 - Gift
Spring Festival was almost here. Because Shen Shao wasn’t going to return to his hometown this year, he went to the post office to ship some presents to his relatives.
In this era there was no express delivery, and he had to fork over a considerable amount of postage at the post office.
After mailing the packages, Shen Shao rode his bike home. Along the way it began to rain, and by the time he arrived, his hair was soaked.
“Xiao Shao, you’re back?” Grandma Yang, who lived next door, saw Shen Shao was wet. She asked with some worry, “What happened? Your clothes are soaked through!”
Shen Shao took out his key and opened the door. “It’s OK. I got a little rained on, that’s all. I’ll just take a shower and change my clothes.”
“Then go change your clothes. Don’t think if you’re young you don’t have to take care of your health. It won’t be good if you get sick.” Grandma Yang didn’t say much more to Shen Shao when she heard what he said, but she urged him to go inside and dry off. Grandma Yang liked Shen Shao. In her eyes he was a boy with good grades, good manners, and respect for the elderly.
It wasn’t just her. Many of the older people in the community spoke highly of Shen Shao, because they frequently encountered him when Shen Shao was out running for exercise. If they were carrying things, he was always eager to help. In addition to Shen Shao’s sweet tongue, they heard from the Liang family that Shen Shao was ranked first in an experimental class of No. 3 High School. All of that meant Shen Shao won the affection of a lot of local grandparents in just a few months.
After taking a shower, Shen Shao changed his clothes. He’d only been sitting down for a little while when he heard a knock at the door. When he opened it, he saw Grandma Yang standing outside with a bowl of kelp and pork trotter soup. The old lady smiled brightly. “Xiao Shao, come and try the kelp and pig trotter soup that Grandma made. Tell me if it’s close to what you made last time.”
“Thank you, Grandma Yang.” Shen Shao didn’t refuse but quickly accepted the soup. Because they lived across from each other, they frequently gave each other bowls of soup or steamed meat to sample, so he didn’t try to be polite.
After taking a sip of the steaming soup while Grandma Yang watched, Shen Shao said with admiration, “This is a lot better than the version I made. When XiaoLan comes back, she’ll probably eat two entire bowls.”
“Oh, don’t exaggerate! Our XiaoLan always says your cooking is better than mine and her mother’s.” Grandma Yang was elated by the compliment. She shared a few more details with Shen Shao about how she stewed the soup before heading back to her home.
Shen Shao looked down at the bowl of pig trotter soup in his hand, smiled helplessly, and closed the door. With such a large bowl of stewed pig trotters, all he had to do for lunch was stir-fry some vegetables.
The community he lived in had a better atmosphere than he’d expected. All of the neighbors got along well. If anyone had trouble, they helped each other out. He was glad he’d rented a one bedroom apartment here. After all, it was important to have a good living environment.
After resting for an hour in the afternoon, Shen Shao did ten sheets of calligraphy practice. Because it was so close to New Year’s, he didn’t bother his master. He relaxed and stayed in his apartment practicing calligraphy in peace and quiet.
In the evening, he heard the neighbor next door say he had a package, so he went to the doorman with his umbrella to get it. He felt a little confused. How many people even knew he lived here, and who would have sent him something?
When he went to the doorman, he took the package and saw his name was clearly written on it, along with the address of the apartment he lived in now. He thanked the doorman and went back to his place with the package. Countless movie plots ran through his mind, but when he opened the package with a knife, everything looked normal. There were no time bombs or poisonous needles or darts, and there were no anonymous threatening letters.
Inside the package were a few heavy books and a small box about three fingers wide. The book contained information about calligraphy and traditional literature. There were also two books with math and physics puzzles.
Shen Shao’s confusion deepened. Who would have sent this to him?
He looked at the postmark and saw the mailing address was in the capital. He held his chin and thought about it, but he couldn’t think of anyone he knew in his life who lived in the capital.
He’d heard that Shen JianBing had settled in the capital with that woman, but Shen Shao knew without a moment’s thought that Shen JianBing wouldn’t have sent him anything. He probably didn’t even know where Shen Shao lived, let alone wanted to spend money to send him things.
Suddenly he remembered the other small box in the package. When he opened the lid he felt stunned.
The box wasn’t particularly unusual, but what was inside was surprising. It was a carved jade Guanyin about the size of a thumb. Even if Shen Shao didn’t know much about jade, he could tell at a glance it was a high quality piece.
There was a saying that men wear Guanyin and women wear Buddha, and there were many parents who would ask acquaintances to give an amulet to their child. Some amulets had signs of the zodiac, some had transit beads, and some had Guanyin or Buddha. Shen Shao wore an amulet when he was a child too, but it wasn’t a gift. His mother sewed it herself using an extremely simple method. She took a small piece of red cloth, filled it with rice and matches, sewed it into a triangle, and tied the cord around his neck.
Later he was naughty and dropped the amulet into the water. His mother thought he was old enough to run and jump and didn’t need an amulet anymore, so she didn’t make another one, and certainly didn’t spend money to buy one. As he grew older, Shen Shao never thought about wearing one. Now, when he saw the thumb-sized jade Guanyin, he felt a little overwhelmed.
Who exactly had sent him all this?
Shen Shao looked over everything again, but he didn’t find anything useful. Even the mailing address was vague. The only thing he found was a handwritten sentence on the title page of the traditional literature book.
Happy New Year.
“Never mind.” Shen Shao closed the book in his hand. No matter who the person was or what purpose they had, he decided it didn’t matter.
Maybe it was the legendary Daddy-Long-Legs from the story.
Feeling a little happy, Shen Shao put the books on the shelf. As for the jade Guanyin, he didn’t wear it. He locked it with the box in his cabinet.
On New Year’s Eve, fireworks and firecrackers continually went off outside. Shen Shao lay in bed and listened to the noise. After a while he still wasn’t able to sleep, so he leaned on the window ledge and watched the fireworks. They were beautiful, but after a long time, watching them alone felt a little boring.
The host of the Spring Festival Gala on TV was counting down the time. When Shen Shao heard the number “3”, firecrackers went off everywhere. The sound was so loud he couldn’t hear the TV.

The new century was here. He looked at the fireworks exploding outside and yawned.
At last the year 2000 had officially arrived.
If his memory wasn’t wrong, after 2000, China’s economy would develop rapidly. Prices would rise along with it. Soon, the new currency that was issued in October of last year would replace the previous currency. Countless people would sigh about spending more and more money and getting less and less for it.
After the New Year, the phrase “the 21st century” became a popular term, used so often it seemed like a required phrase in articles and newspapers, as if they weren’t keeping up with the times unless they included it. It wasn’t until the end of 2000 that use of the phrase began to decrease. But at least this type of brainwashing had one advantage. People gradually understood they were living in a new era, and it was time to close the book on the 20th century.
Time often passes without a trace, and a year or two could disappear in the blink of an eye. Shen Shao, who was in the top three in his grade, finally embarked on his senior year.
When the students divided into literature and science tracks at the end of the first year of senior high, Class 15 became a science class. The students in the class didn’t change much, but after the split, they realized the mountain of the college entrance exam was truly approaching.
“Shen Shao, the results of the monthly exam are out. You’re number one again!” Zhou ZeYu rushed into the classroom with an excited face and ran to Shen Shao’s desk. “I heard the school’s going to send the top three students in the science monthly exam to the national math league. Did you hear about it?”
“Math League?” Shen Shao knew that in previous years, the school sent seniors to participate in this competition, but they hadn’t done better than runner-up.
“Yes, you’re definitely on the list this time,” said Zhou ZeYu. At first he was excited, but now he felt a little depressed. “If there are students from Jingcheng No. 1 High School and Yanghe No. 3 High School there, our school will be lucky to get third place.”
Shen Shao didn’t know much about the grudges between various schools, so Zhou ZeYu’s words didn’t have much effect on him. After the school released the list which confirmed he was included, he didn’t feel nervous.
Anyway, in his opinion, the important thing was participating. Taking first place in the competition wasn’t a priority for him.
However, it was obvious the school attached a lot of importance to the competition. To ensure the three students would be able to rest and perform well, the school purchased plane tickets and sent the vice principal and two teachers to accompany them to the capital.
Before they boarded the plane, the teaching director and the class teachers of the three students went to see them off personally. It felt a little like giving a warm send off to heroes departing for battle.
Shen Shao was so calm compared to the other two students that Zhang JiaHe, his class teacher, didn’t know what to do with the words of encouragement and reassurance he’d prepared. In the end, he just patted Shen Shao on the shoulder and told him to rest well.
As he watched Shen Shao and others pass through the boarding gate, Zhang JiaHe sighed. As a teacher he felt proud, but he also felt a little ineffectual. It was a bit of a contradiction.
“Mr. Zhang, the student from your class has such a good mindset.”
“Not at all, he’s just an inexperienced kid.”
“Don’t be modest. Back when Shen Shao was first admitted, didn’t he score first place on the external admission test?”
Zhang JiaHe laughed a little awkwardly and avoided the topic. He didn’t want his colleagues to envy or dislike him.
The principal saw the teachers talking jovially and had no idea about Zhang JiaHe’s mixed feelings. “I already heard that both Jingcheng No. 1 High School and Yanghe No. 3 High School sent students to the competition.”
The smiles on the faces of the three class teachers receded, and they sighed to themselves. It seemed their No. 3 High School would have nothing to brag about once again.
