“I must learn more about this world. I must read the history of demons, the Empire, and why there are independent human kingdoms here despite a massive empire ruling most of the continent. Without a book or two, or someone with knowledge and spare time about the topic, I might never learn.” I’ve been thinking about this and walking through the town's streets for almost an hour. I tried to ask people walking by, but everyone gave the same answer. “I don’t know, but x person in y place might have an answer for you. Maybe try visiting them.” So I try finding that person, but because I am a stranger to this ridiculously designed and big town, I keep getting lost and finding myself on the same corner after every five minutes.

I am on that very same corner, right next to a bakery. Thankfully Fluffy is not with me because I don’t want to embarrass my pet with the poor navigation abilities I display. I left him with Olive. “Okay, one more try, and if I fail again, I am going back to the damned inn and asking Olive for information.”

After I finished my whining, I began moving forward, but suddenly a hand touched my shoulder. With an instinct, I jumped away and grabbed my sword. I looked to see who touched my shoulder. The knight from yesterday, and somehow, despite wearing all his gear, he made no sound as he approached me. I either have sensory problems, or this guy has something wrong going on with him.

“Sorry, I didn’t want to startle you. You are Erwin, right? One who saved Maria, Marcus from those pesky bandits.” I took my hand away from my sword's handle. He doesn’t sound like he has ill intentions, but sneaking someone from behind, you don’t do that.

“You scared me for a second, but I wonder how you managed to be so quiet with all that armor. I wear something similar, but unlike you, I sound like a key ring filled with rings shaking every time I take a step.”

“That's a secret, but I want to change the topic fast. Would you like to go for a walk with me? I have something to tell. I couldn’t tell yesterday's meeting because of miss Jade and the mayor.” That was pretty sudden, but this offer looks good. I’ve been doing nothing but walking in circles and considering that he was pretty knowledgeable yesterday, I might find some answers to my questions and see if he is the culprit behind fake missions in the guild.

“I don’t have much to do, so why not.”

Knight began walking through the city. He is moving through busy streets, controlling if anything goes wrong. He is exchanging short words with civilians passing by. The words they exchange are limited to simple, good days or have a good one, but people seem to have a genuine smile when talking with this man. I also learned his name. Arthur.

And I learned more about him through our walk. I already heard that he was the city guards captain from Ruckus when he beat the man who tried to extort money from me at the entrance, but I now see how competent he is, compared to his subordinates.

We walked through several more streets with Arthur until we finally left the city walls. He still hasn't told me why he needed my help, and I smell something fishy from this, but I will keep it going for the time being. In the worst-case scenario, I can rely on my sword to break through bandit ambushes and escape to town.

Still, one half of my brain is telling me there wouldn't be any problem. Arthur looks like a genuinely good guy. Throughout our walk through the city streets, I haven't seen any towns folk who didn't greet him, and they had smiles on their face.

I wonder what he will tell me. Perhaps he is after the bandit case too, or he has something completely different on his plate and is in a bad situation since monsters began showing up around the town. I don't know how people of this earth would react, but if I learned a King Ursa is hunting near where I live, I would start feeling anxious.

Monsters, bandits, a civil war cooking to explode, I can only wish the best for this kingdom, but if everything goes south, I will take all my money and move somewhere else, to another realm. After all, I have no boundaries in this world. Maybe I could find more treasure and buy a small piece of land I can live on peacefully.

Plans about the future aside, we have been walking into the forest for some time, and city walls are now completely hidden behind the thick forest.

I hear running water, and it's loud. We are probably somewhere near a river. Considering the town has a sewer system that carries waste outside the city, I wouldn't be surprised if this river is where that is going. And the trees here are different too. Despite the snow, they have flowers blooming on them.

Arthur stopped. "Show yourself, we arrived."

"And it took both of you long enough. I've been freezing here, damn it. Couldn't you say what was in your head somewhere inside the town?" It is Ruckus. He jumped down from a tree with flowers stuck on his cloak.

"You know that I have my reasons to tighten the security."

I raised my hand like a student asking for an opportunity to ask a question. "So, can I learn why I am here?"

Ruckus picked a flower and showed it to me. "Beakbreakers, native to the north, and have attributes we need. No bird can get close to them, which means we are free from the wandering eyes of a certain person. Now, will you explain the situation to our friend waiting here, or should I do that instead?"

"No need for that. Erwin, I will go straight into the business. The kids and women you saved from bandits are not ordinary rich people. Lady Jade is a renowned physician and personal doctor of the current king, and these two kids are the current crown prince and his younger sister, the princess." Fuck me. I am not sure where this talk is going, but not somewhere good. "You see, there are some conspiracies against the current king, and he will surely die, but long as we protect the heirs, the king's brother, General Lionheart, will save the throne from rebels."

"I wish to stay away from this, but since I got myself in unwillingly, and you solidified my position in this shithole by telling me all these details, cut your words short and tell me what you want."

Arthur smiled. "I liked your attitude. I want you to teach a thing or two to the boy. The death of his older brother and his father's bad mental and physical conditions caused him to be locked in a golden cage. He knows very little about the world, but I believe you have some tricks to share."

Ah, how good. "I don't want to be rude, but if you are so afraid for those kids' health, why trust a stranger? Can't I kill them when you are not looking or bring them to those rebels? Aren't you trusting me too easily?"

Arthur pulled out a flower-shaped stone necklace under his armor and looked at it with a bittersweet smile. "I know I can trust you, and I am sure you have needed skills, don't ask me why."

Ruckus put his arm on my shoulder. "And there will be a payment. Ten gold for training boy, and twenty for keeping your mouth shut, and probably a title and some land after Lionheart takes back the throne."

"I suppose I can't just grab my things and move away after hearing everything." They both shook their head no. How lovely. But I seem to have no other choice than meddling in this business. It pays well enough, I will not be worried about finding work for a while, and if everything goes smoothly, I will achieve a peaceful life.

I sighed. "Good, count me in, but I want more details. Who will I stay away from, are we in danger, should I act on high alert, where can I train the boy, and if things go bad, which kingdom should I escape to."

"Be afraid of anyone who has two dots tattooed under their eyes. You will train the boy in the manor's basement, I already cleaned it to open space where you can teach him, and finally, if things go south, there will be nowhere we can run to, and we will count ourselves dead if heirs die."

I nodded.

"And before I forget, if you see an unnatural amount of ravens and crows waiting on a place, bring the kids to me fast as you can, and act as if there is a man with a dagger waiting in every corner because if she is working with them, there most likely is."
