Dark, foul, and humiliating—the swine's quarters is where Edward and his mother lived. Head bowed and steps heavy, he walked towards the small house that he called home. His mother would be waiting there, alone in the darkness with possibly a candle to keep her company. Ed earned enough for them to eat twice a day and have light at night, but he wished he could give her more. He knew she deserved better from him—after all her sacrifices to keep him alive. The wealth, name, and power she could have retained, all gone, because she chose to protect her son. These thoughts burned at the back of Ed's mind as he chose to keep quiet and live a peasant's life.
