"Excuse me, is this place empty?"

During the process of my serious mental activity, I did not immediately notice a knock on the door of my compartment.

Soon, the face of a young man appeared in the doorway, who, seeing that only I was there, asked:

"Miss, do you mind if I join you? I've been looking for a compartment for so long, but everyone is already occupied."

"Oh, yes, of course..."

I mumbled it out of politeness, even though I wasn't too keen on going with a stranger.

Fortunately, he looked quite friendly, and sat on the opposite side so as not to cause me any inconvenience.

As soon as the young man was in front of me, I couldn't help but look at him; he was quite good-looking, you might even say handsome; his blond hair lay flat on his head in a neat hairstyle, and his blue eyes radiated a soft, pleasant glow.

Even if we hadn't been on the same train to the Royal Academy, I would have known right away that he was an aristocrat. From his appearance and demeanor, which were different from ordinary people, it seemed that he had been practicing all these skills since childhood.

The stranger, in turn, was looking at me, though he did it much more imperceptibly.

Despite the similarities to the description in the book, the terrifying thought that this man might be the Crown Prince somehow didn't cross my mind.

After all, I couldn't believe that such a high-ranking person like him could just sit down in a compartment with a strange girl and talk to her! Most likely, the royals should have been given a separate compartment, or even a carriage, so I didn't have to worry about that.

It was likely that this guy was just from a noble family, just like me.

We drove in absolute silence for a while, with my eyes fixed on the window and his on the ceiling.

Then, the stranger suddenly spoke to me:

"What year are you studying in?"

"Ah... well... On the first," I hesitated, "And you?"

"Me too," he smiled, "I guess you're worried. I couldn't sleep all night. It is said that for many, studying at school is the most important and interesting stage in life."

"It must be true," I agreed, even though I would have given anything to stay at home and not go anywhere.

"I'm glad you let me go with you," the young man continued, "In fact, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a common language with others. But you seem like a good person."

"Really? I hope so."

The stranger looked at me curiously, as if trying to read my thoughts.

I had nothing to hide from a guy I was seeing for the first time in my life, so with a tight, blissful smile on my face, I probably looked like a fool.

"What's your name?" I asked my new acquaintance.

"Mmm... You can call me Phil" he said, after a moment's hesitation, "and you, dear lady?"

"Leriana. Nice to meet you. "

We shook hands.

"Your name is as beautiful as you are," Phil complimented with a charming smile.

Any other girl, at this moment, would probably have melted with happiness long ago.

I giggled nervously.

The real Leriana, who was born an unearthly beauty, had received such praises for her appearance since childhood. This was not surprising to her.

As for me... In my previous life, no one but my mom ever said that I was even cute. Perhaps this was due to the fact that I was really plain.

But now, with the face of the most beautiful girl in Zeroth, I felt awkward when I received such words and looks.

"Thank you, you're all right, too..." I thanked him, and he laughed in response.

We spent the rest of the drive chatting happily, discussing a variety of topics.

Phil was a very pleasant companion, and I was glad that I had already made friends here.

After all, if I still had to study at the academy for the next three years, then having friends would help me adapt more quickly and significantly brighten up this time.

A couple of hours later, the train stopped at a station near the Royal Academy.

The students' belongings were delivered in advance, and most likely already distributed to their rooms.

As soon as we got off the ground, the academy's security guards, led by one of the teachers, escorted us to the building.

I saw a substantial snow-white castle, consisting of several floors, and which looked more like a historical landmark than an educational institution.

A high golden gate surrounded it, and when we passed through it, I couldn't help but hold my breath at the beauty I saw.

This place was indeed, an elite academy exclusively for rich kids from aristocratic families.

Most likely, the selection here was no worse than in the most prestigious universities.

As we were led inside, I could see that the academy's courtyard had its own lake, greenhouse, and even a garden with fruit trees.

Well, it was possible to have a desire to enter here, if only because it created simply excellent living conditions.

The headmaster's opening speech to the freshmen was going to take place in the ceremonial hall, and there wasn't much time left until then.

Phil, who had been walking beside me all this time, kept looking around, muttering uneasily to himself.

"Is something wrong?" I asked.

"Leriana, you can go inside," he said.

"Eh?"

"I have to find my brother," the young man looked confused. "We arrived here together, but for some reason I don't see him. He's very shy, so I'm worried that he might get lost."

"That's right," I said sympathetically. "Sure, go ahead. Just don't be late for the ceremony, Phil."

Phil disappeared into the crowd, and I was left alone.

The principal's speech was less than ten minutes away, and more than half of the students had already entered the classroom.

I decided not to linger, either, and headed for the large doors that were open.

At that moment, just before the entrance, a man walked past me, accidentally pushing me.

It was painful enough, but I didn't even have time to demand an apology, because the unknown person immediately disappeared.

It seemed that not everyone here was as well-mannered as it might seem at first glance.

With a snort, I decided to put the incident out of my mind and went inside, taking the first available seat in the back row.

After all, it would be better for me if I was less likely to be seen by others.

As soon as the lights in the auditorium went out, our headmaster came on stage. He was a tall, thin, plain-looking man who looked like my primary school teacher.

"Dear first-year students, we are glad to welcome you to our academy! Here you will meet and learn everything that will allow you to become worthy members of our society. In addition to gaining knowledge, the academy is also a great opportunity to make new acquaintances among peers in your class, and strengthen ties between your families... "

And so on.

The director's speech was exactly what I'd imagined it would be.

Of course, only half of the people present here came to the academy solely for their knowledge. The rest, however, was simply in search of useful connections and a profitable partner, which, as a rule, were acquired during training in such institutions.

I didn't know if this was a good or bad thing, but it had always been the way it was, and I wasn't going to stick my nose in it.

The opening speech was supposed to be long, and I was about to fall asleep in the fifth minute when suddenly...

A heart-rending scream rang out from the western part of the castle.

Everyone immediately tensed, trying to figure out what had happened.

The screams continued, and it became clear that it would be impossible to ignore.

The ceremony was interrupted, and the headmaster had to go downstairs to find out what had happened.

Despite the request to remain seated, the students, without thinking twice, followed him as if not hearing this. Out of pure curiosity, I decided to keep up with the others.

Eventually, when they reached the sound source, everyone froze at sight.

Even the headmaster, who was about to punish the intruder severely, hesitated.

There were two men in the garden by a stone pillar. The student guy who was lying on the ground, curled up in pain, and the man who attacked him.

It turned out to be a girl with a frightening aura, who had apparently let go of the young man only a moment ago, and now casually shook her hands as if she had touched something dirty before.

The director and everyone here knew who this person was, and so the fear in the eyes of many only increased.

When our eyes met for just a split second, I saw her bright red eyes flash in the sunlight.

My legs staggered.

I couldn't believe it was really her.

Rachel Cassius.

Mother of the second main character, the cursed Duke tyrant, who would be a deadly threat to the kingdom in the future.

And also the mother of Britney's future lover.
